schools - new chapter

I want to do medical coding...ive been doing some research online and they say a lot of online courses are scams and to make sure I go to an accredited school.
Accredited by whom? - sm

Accreditation can mean several things, some of which are meaningless. For-profit scam schools can set up "accreditation" organizations to accredit themselves. Legitimate colleges can be appropriately accredited, but teach poor coding courses.
On the other hand, one of the best coding courses in the country is both online and accreditation-free. (It is the wrong kind of school to be accredited.) It is, however, licensed by the State of Oklahoma, which has one of the most rigorous licensing processes in the country.

I am at the beginning stages of this search and just don't want to choose the wrong course to take. there are so many out there advertising they "they are the best". Ive put some calls in to some local coders so I can pick their brain about this career, hope to hear from them soon. Thank you for your help

You might want to research the career field before trying to choose a course. From the way you ask the question, it does not sound as though you understand what coding is, the types of coding, or how schools fit in with that.
You should also read this board back a few months ... what you asked can be found there several times over. We answer questions about schools all the time.
To answer your question, "accreditation" means several things and it isn't necessarily relevant to coding training. It can mean that a college is accredited by a recognized regional accrediting body. There are also bogus accrediting bodies, so you have to know which are valid. You seem to think it means a school is not a scam, but it does not mean that.
In health information management and technology, the American Health Information Association accredits bachelor's (RHIA) programs in HIM and associate's (RHIT) programs in HIT. You cannot qualify to take their registry exams unless you have graduated from one of those programs. They do not accredit coding programs, however. They only "approve" some programs. A program can be excellent, but not on their list because they are not a college. There are schools on the list that many consider to be for-profit ripoffs. Being approved does not mean it teaches enough for you to qualify for the CCS exam. The coding course that AHIMA itself offers is approved, but it does not qualify.
The American Association of Professional Coders does not accredit or approve courses, but it offers its own and it certifies instructors to use its materials. You do not have to take those courses to take AAPC exams. Their main course is for the CPC, which is outpatient physician services coding. Those courses can be very good, if you want to do only that type of coding.
I recommend Andrews, which is an exceptional school. It qualifies for the CCS exam and everything else from either AHIMA or AAPC. For what you get, it is no more expensive than any other school. It is licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools, so you have that assurance that it is not a scam and that students are protected.
If you are not interested in that much training, and you are not interested in spending time getting a college degree in HIT or HIM, just go with an AAPC CPC course.
Thank you for the detailed explanation - Not the OP but thanks

The detailed explanation is very helpful. I know from my own experience that what you say is true, but you said it better than I could.

There are quite a few good community colleges in your area, you could check into those programs and see what they offer. Also, look at the AHIMA website; I think they list the schools that teach accredited programs. Your concern will be passing certificates exams, so make sure you enroll in a good program.
I'm searching everywhere on web for info on the best recommended schools for Medical Transcription. Canscribe is said to be 'one of the best', however it's soooo expensive. Does anyone know a few other good schools recommended by AHDI ?

The patient has a few-month history of thigh pain and numbness. Overall, I suspect the symptoms are likely secondary to radicular origin associated with his L4-5 spondylosis with foraminal narrowing. However, other causes including meralgia paresthetica or diabetic s/l amioxi should be excluded.
I appreciate any help you guys can offer! Thanks :) ...
I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through Allied School in California for billing & coding. If so, how was your experience? Were you able to find work in coding after finishing the course and getting your certification? I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past 10-11 years and am now looking at getting into coding. My best friend and I are going to take a course together. If you wouldn't recommend Allied as a school, who would you reco ...
I have been recently sending out my resume along with inquiring whether certain companies I am interested in are currently hiring. About 90% have not had even the courtesy to acknowledge receiving the e-mail. I am wondering if anyone also recently looking has had this problem and if anyone knows if companies not hiring generally keep this info on file or does it make sense in a month or two to recontact. I can certainly tell the market has cha ...
As I was reading through a lot of the depressing posts I thought I would share my experience. I have been an MT for almost 4 years. I was with the same company for almost 3 as an IC. I worked part-time to stay home with my kids. I completely agree with others about how hard it can be with the being in work mode all the time and the ups and downs. At the time I wasn't the sole provider though. However my husband got laid off the beginning of this year and I started to look for full-time ...

Check with the BBB. They shouldn't just have NO activity, but be part of the ongoing audit, not just boast they have had NO activity. Heck, I have had no activity!!! It is only as good as what is submitted.

I know these things have probably been covered before here, but could someone please give me some general advice on what it is to be an IC? Do you just send the IRS a quarterly payment and that's it? What about Social Security and matching? I have always done my own taxes, but I am in new territory here and probably will need a tax preparer now, but until then.....

Is it me or is this more of a pain recently? Seems like the specialities are not listed and instead it just says medicine so it is really hard to find some doctors, and the search by just specialty just doesn't work anymore? Coders who post on this board need to remind
themselves that it is basically for MTs who are networking.
A medical transcriptionist who is a coding student or has become a newly
certified coder has now learned in the last couple of days that:
1.
MT experience, other than medical
knowledge, means nothing in the coding world.
There IS a big difference between school coding and actual work.
2.

I recently graduated MT school from Career Step and I'm in the process of looking up companies that would be good to apply for. I have a small list of potential companies but I would rather not apply without any feedback on the company first. I'd rather not be offered a job and take it not knowing anything about them. If you know anything (good or bad) about the following companies I would greatly appreciate your input!

Honestly, why when you search a company do tons of posts from 2006 and previous come up and you have to go through pages and pages of old posts before you see the recent info? The posts should be date order, latest first, IMHO. Who cares what people wrote about a company in 2006 when so many things have changed?
I think anything older than a few years ago should not even be included in the search results since not only have most companies changed massively, our work environment has as well, i.e. ...

I've been noticing available jobs that have various but similar titles, but basically the function is as described in the link. I think I'd really enjoy doing this, but I'm not sure what to study (some sort of medical office program?) . Ideally, I need to take a course online if there's something decent, but I'm enrolled at the technical college in my home town for fall, so I could go that way. In looking at what they offer, though, nothing seems like i ...
I am an MT who is considering going to school for coding. I am thinking about taking the course through Andrews and will probably start next year because I will have to save up some of the money. I am wondering if you think coding may eventually go the way of medical transcription and be outsourced to India. I do not think it will so I just wanted to get the opinions of other coders. I realize it will be a hard course but I think it will be worth the effort. Any thoughts would be appre ...
I know a lot of MTs are back in school, how are you progressing?
