Person looking for advice on MT school - MT4Eight

A friend is asking me for advice on becoming an MT. My first instinct is to talk them out of it, as this career is on a fast track down the pooper. But I'm sure they'll insist. Anyone know of any good transcription schools that are legit? I have no idea, because I didn't go to school for MT. I got a lucky start from a relative who was an MTSO.

Honestly, I've researched this up and down.. if you want to work in the industry, and eventually be seen as a real MT by prospective employers it just makes sense to either go with Andrews, (my choice),or MedTec...
To get the same training they actually cost about the same. The money difference is that MedTec offers some less expensive courses that don't include some of the things that you may need. Andrews offers 1 single course in a *sort of* do it all or don't do it at all way. A look at their websites will tell you the differences. I've heard that graduates from both are more likely to get a job test. Only makes sense, no job tests = no job. From what I understand from the MTs I know, breaking into the field is hard and "You gotta be a lot better than good".

I didn't go to either of those schools and I got a job right away and have been working steadily since my first job in October 2007. I actually went through the course at Learntranscription.com.

You do have to research the schools quite carefully. A good one will provide a good dictionary and foot pedal as part of the program. It sounds basic, but it's not always.

You want to make sure they have statistics on what percentage of their graduates are working in the field and what kind of income they are making. A good school will also offer placement assistance for their graduates. See if they offer financial assistance or a payment plan of sorts. The one I went to had a couple of different payment plan options. They also have their own transcription service and offer internships and jobs to their graduates.

Any of these schools which are "self paced" and self moderated are only going to be as good as the effort you put into it. You have to study and really work at it to make it worth your time and your money.

There is one more distance learning school I can think of that has a good reputation and also taking the program through a local oollege (quite a few of them still offer it) would allow her to get some college credits. The training is a big part of it but the person has to have the smarts, the patience and the willingness to learn and be doing it for reasons other than "wanting to work at home."

Just wanted to clarify to see if you meant M-tec? M-Tec is pretty well know but I have never heard of a Medtec.

There is a Meditec training course, and the website is meditec.com, but not the same at M-TEC. I looked into meditec about ten years ago and didn't think that it was all that great, but just my opinion.

Meditec is a very good online program offering an internship program where most students are hired upon completion. In fact, they are the only program that offers this type of internship program.

When a company decides to make an account VR, are all the reports a mess to begin with for weeks or months until the voice engine (sorry if that's the wrong term) learns from the "straight" transcription that is done?
