Do you ever have to work while a repair person.... - is working on something......

Posted: Oct 23, 2014

.....in your house, like, say, your furnace or your plumbing? I would be afraid of breaking the HIPAA laws, but as we all know, repairmen/women do not work around our schedules....they come when they can.  And when ya gotta get it done, ya gotta get it done! Just wondering how you all handle it.

If no one else is home - sm

I stop working and hang around the general area of where the person is doing the repair. I don't want them roaming other areas of my house. If there is another family member home, they keep apprised of the repairperson's goings-on and I continue to work .

No, Not Worried About HIPAA Issues - But...

If those people were to see something, I doubt they'd know what they were even looking at, and I'm sure they're not paying attention to your screen. The ADT is not particularly large. So in terms of HIPAA, no, I do not worry.

I, though, do not like people roaming around the house while I'm working, but sometimes there's nothing you can do about it. Between me and my husband, we manage to plan work in the house during one of our day's off. If it's just "you" and that's not possible, there's not much you can do in terms of trusting them or not.

HIPAA? Shoot, work goes to India so I'd - not be too worried. nm

Oh big deal, like they could read and understand - what was on the screen, who the heck knows anyway?

[ In Reply To ..]
I could care less if a repair person had to come to my home, office. Whooo, is the HIPAA squad gonna get you?

This is an ethical issue. - You would know

You would be the first one to complain about your data being breached, Ibjn.

This is an ethical issue. You do it because it is the right thing to dol

Bank data has been breached and it happens - Am not worried about Big Brother

People here seem to be scared of their own shadows. Boo.

Having workmen in your home is - not a HIPAA violation.

[ In Reply To ..]
It sounds as though you might think that just having workmen in your home is a HIPAA violation. It is not, no more than having family or friends in your home is.

It only becomes a violation if they *read or listen to* protected information.

You should secure any visible PHI or PII (on screen, printed out, whatever) so that it cannot be viewed. You should not be transcribing without headphones, i.e., not played out loud. The friends, family, workmen should not be allowed to access your office area unescorted.

You should not assume that none of those people could understand what they are hearing or reading.

If you have to speak to them in your office. SM - Old Anon

minimize your screen for a few moments. My heating guy has been coming here for years. He goes between the basement and his truck. My other handyman type does his work and doesn't roam about the house. If he needs to ask me anything he stands in my office doorway, and he can't see my screen anyway. He does get a bit chatty though, and sometimes I have to let him know I need to work. Just use people you know and trust. It's nice that I'm here and can schedule stuff just about any day of the week.

My "office" is in a corner of my living room (I live by myself) - so it may well be......

[ In Reply To ..]
....a HIPAA violation for me to work with somebody in my house.

No, it is NOT NOT NOT a violation to have - someone in your home!!!

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you WANT it to be a violation? Several people told you it was not. Why do you keep saying it must be?

HIPAA pertains to unauthorized DISCLOSURES. It doesn't say one word about who can be in a workplace.

A person being in your home or office is not a disclosure. Seeing your chair or your computer is not a disclosure. Spackling your wall or drinking coffee with you is not a disclosure.

The have to see or gain possession of the information for it to be a disclosure. Standing there reading the report is a disclosure. Fishing a log sheet out of your trash is a disclosure.

This is not rocket science. There is ample material available online for you to educate yourself about this.

You just have to take steps to keep them from seeing what is on your computer. Blank out the screen.

LOL, why the "dislike"???? - I was just asking a....

[ In Reply To ..]
....question????

Because of the - question

[ In Reply To ..]
Because you still do not know something (HIPAA) that should be part of your working knowledge.

Well, ......... - maybe.....

[ In Reply To ..]
....just an idiot then. HMMMM

I just close the door as per my usual routine - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I tell him I work at home and if he needs me to just knock. I find when a repair person is in the house and I am not working I don't know what to do with myself (I tend to hover--which I know they must hate LOL), so it always works out best when I am working!!

Not a problem for me. As an MT, I can't afford - to have things repaired. n.m.

QA Person
Jul 30, 2012

What exactly are the duties of a QA person?  Whenever I make a mistake she lets me know, of course, but she is always adding a snide remark and make me feel like I am still in school.  I am sick and tired of it.  I am thinking about complaining to my CCM, but I am not sure I want go that route yet.  I have saved all of her sarcastic comments.  So I made a mistake, she is not perfect.  She should just tell me about it and let it go.  I am not stupid.  I ack ...

Anybody Else Have A QA Person
Jan 01, 2014

Honestly, every time I get a big ding it is from one person. Everyone else seems to not mark me off much. Pardon my paranoia, but I just have to wonder if this person is targeting me and poring through my work until they find the one that has the errors and that's the one they end up reviewing. And about these "Major Errors" (or otherwise) - one middle digit off in platelets, really? 3 points? I know that is officially the rule, but to my knowledge unless platelets are particularly low or ...

I read what you wrote and it touched my heart.  You sound like a really nice person who is just looking for the right option for you. I understand that. Like I said, it touched my heart, so I started brainstorming in your behalf from what I did and what might work for you.  Please don't laugh at my suggestions. They come from my heart. You mentioned that you wouldn't be able to use the $1,000 for Andrews. I can't remember what school you were required to use it at, but ...

VR Person From Thread Way Down Below.
Jan 20, 2010

When a company decides to make an account VR, are all the reports a mess to begin with for weeks or months until the voice engine (sorry if that's the wrong term) learns from the "straight" transcription that is done?  Why do different platforms matter (i.e., E-scription versus M-Modal, etc).  Is it possible for a company to get an account and make it VR from day 1, or do they have MTs do regular transcription on it for awhile? I guess I'm just trying to figure outwhat I sho ...

Need Help With Hernia Repair
Dec 12, 2011

The preperitoneum was taken down. The hernia was indeed medial to the epigastric vessels. The preperitoneal fat was further reduced. The hernia sac was completely reduced out of that area. A space was then created in the preperitoneum. A 4 x 6 inch Composix mesh was then introduced, secured to the ileopubic tract laterally and then also medially. The peritoneum was then closed over this with additional absorbable tacks. He tolerated this quite well. I'm not finding "preperitoneum" anywhere ...

the word "the," can you imagine how hard it will be to find another job when you have failed audits?  People probably assume (and rightly so) that you put in erroneous information or left out vital information from dictation -- something that brought about harm to the patient.  There is no way you could possibly get them to believe that in reality you put out beautiful work every day all day, and it was a discrepancy over whether the dictation read "Lab tests were normal" versus "The l ...
