the EMR system that makes your job go - away
[ In Reply To ..]
Epic is just one electronic medical record company but the name is used to represent all of them, like Kleenex or Q-Tip.
so it is not a subsidiary of M2? - East MT

it is competition?
Not directly, like Nuance, but competition for our jobs, yes - anon

It's purpose is to "streamline" a doctor's visit for the patient. Usually, an assistant will come in to the room with a laptop and do a "point and click" of symptoms: Headache, check. Nausea, check. Abdominal pain, check.
Point and click of Social history: Nonsmoker, check. Nondrinker, check.
It cuts the time that a physician spends in the room with you in half because 99% of the questioning and interview is done by the assistant.
The Epic technology will even "suggest" treatment plans for the physician so he doesn't have to spend a lot of time developing one for you during your visit.
The beauty is, that the patient can even check their medical record from home. If they see something that doesn't belong, or an error, they can fix it right then or have it removed.
Here is the website for the software that will explain everything it does. It's expensive, but super advanced and most doctors' offices and hospitals are going this way, if they haven't already, just based on the money and time it saves.
right - so the account is gone

The hospital went with Epic, and they don't need us anymore.
Correct. Absolutely no need for transcription with Epic - anon

Everything is added to the patient's electronic medical record right then and there in the room with the patient. No need to wait for reports to be transcribed, if a patient is laying on the table waiting for surgery, their medical record is right there waiting with them. No more TAT, no more "STAT" reports, no more waiting on transcriptionists to "log on" and type reports in the middle of the night.
Also, makes no difference if the patient is in Siberia or Dallas, TX ... their personal medical record is available worldwide ... accurate and immediate.
Part of Obamacare is that it's mandated that ALL patient medical records will be in electronic format this year, 2014, and there will be fines for non compliance.
Makes me kind of wonder ... just how antiquated of a system ARE we, as transcriptionists?
I'd say very - antiquated!

but we did serve our purpose for a lot of years.
accurate I doubt it - sm

I have seen some of my epic reports and most are not accurate. I constantly have to have my medical record corrected.

what we lost were the ER reports. We still have dictation, even reports from the ER. I rarely get NJA.
Beware! - anon

When I first lost my primary account to EPIC, the first to go were the ER's, like you said. Some months after that, everything else went except 1 clinic and a few doctors. You never just never know. I hope you're lucky, every facility is different.

Epic/Editscript Dec 04, 2011The hospital I work for changed over the Editscript last year. Changeover went relatively smoothly, and we still had plenty of work to keep all the transcriptionists busy (after we stopped outsourcing the overflow we used to have). Recently, the hospital switched to Epic electronic medical record system, and within a week the transcription workload plumeted to probably 40% of our former workload --not enough to keep our transcription staff busy. It seems the doctors/nurses/etc ...

EPIC - Venting Session! Dec 20, 2011Venting session!
I am a part-time work-at-home transcriptionist employed at a local hospital as "resource". When I started a couple months ago we had over 1500 jobs in the "cue" with mandatory overtime ... then along came EPIC. The regular employees are working in 2 hour shifts so everyone can get a few reports in ... having under 75 dictations has become the norm and there isn't enough work for them ... and I have had no work for 6 weeks.

Epic Close To Home... Jan 16, 2012A HUGE clinic with many different specialties in this area has went to Epic and now have laid off 30 MTs. They said with Epic they didn't need them all. What a shame! I actually use that clinic, and I knew something was up a couple months ago when I went to the doctor. They had a new system and they were typing everything in the computer. Impact Of EPIC On Coding Feb 26, 2012I was reading a post on one of the other boards about what an EPIC or point-and-click report looks like and it made me think about what it would be like to code a report like that. Was wondering if any coders here code EMR point-and-click reports and does it make your job harder? I would think that lots of narrative and detail would be more helpful in coding. I've never actually seen an EPIC report so I don't know. Thanks. ...
