What is Epic - shipwrecked

Posted: Jan 29, 2010

Please see my post below.  I was afraid it would get lost, and really would like to know what kind of threat Epic is to us.  I've lost one account to them, and now possibly another.

EPIC- Just saw it about 4 hours ago. - Maverick

I went to the doctors about 4 hours ago. Providence in my area. There is a computer in the examining room and on the screen it stated "EPIC - Electronic Medical Records."

The nurse comes in and took my vitals and puts all in the computer system and puts in her triage. The doctor, reads what the nurse puts in, looks up my past visits and tells me about my blood pressure and meds I have been on. I have my physical and then she puts it all in the computer and then tells me her diagnosis and plan and she puts it all in the computer and she says, "Sorry for taking your job away." "This is what Providence wanted."

So, the doctor is basically the transcriptionist.

I was also told 6 months ago that I was losing my primary account to EPIC. At least that is what we were told, but I then found out from my QA/MME, that it actually went to India because of lower costs and they did not blame the hospital for wanting lower costs.

Hope this helps and makes sense.

You confirmed my suspicions - shipwrecked

We don't have enough to worry about with or ILPs, but now Epic. I truthfully don't blame the hospitals for establishing their own in-house service, the way they've been jerked around by MtSOs. I have a hard time visualizing the docs doing their own editing though.

One way or another, we're eventually gonna be screwed.

I live in a SMALL town in Texas and saw the exact same thing when I took a relative in to get a colonoscopy a few years ago. It was really depressing because it was a large GI clinic and all I could think of what how many MTs probably lost their jobs behind this. Not one ESL there either.

my doc still HAND WRITES his notes, and - L&L

I'm not in the boondocks.

How thorough did you think your report was. What about this long complicated hospital reports...will docs/nurses be typing those in also?

Criswell predicts...in 5 yrs, all medical records will read like text messaging, and docs will have an app on their phones for all this.

A couple of my heavy-duty dictators have mysteriously vanished. When I mentioned it to my CCM, she said some of them were testing (cringe) Epic. She said she couldn't imagine docs doing basically what we're doing - editing. Of course, they'd Know what they were saying.

I wonder how much da Q charges the client - per report? per word? I would guess if the hospts set up templates where they only need to plug in a word here and there, after getting everything set up, they could save $$.

Since we'll be in the South Pacific, this whole thing will be a fading nightmare. Medquist? Medquist who?

EPIC: Used in large teaching facility in Texas & has been place for about 5 years now. It is an in-house system used by health care providers where they use a template to type in info. Computers are in examining rooms and nurses/docs input the information. Used mostly in clinics. Some docs fought it to no avail. Some older generation docs retired rather than use it. Younger docs don't seem to mind as they are more technologically savvy. MT work for that facility's clinics disappeared.

EPIC - Euro sepsis

Some of our ER docs use it but they still dictate. They will say "Vitals are as noted in EPIC."

I work for a multispecialty clinic. They are supposed to get EPIC in February 2011, some of the docs are refusing to use it. They will still need editors but at this point no one knows how many. They've already told us that some (probably most) of the MT staff will be cut.
Been there. Out of 22 staff, only 4 remain. - For proofing/editing. NM

Did you find another transcription job? (if so, you don't have to say where). I'm applying for just about everything that I think I might be qualified for at our clinic and outside MT jobs as well. I don't want to leave prematurely in case I slip under the radar, still trying to decide what to do.

Epic/Editscript
Dec 04, 2011

The hospital I work for changed over the Editscript last year.  Changeover went relatively smoothly, and we still had plenty of work to keep all the transcriptionists busy (after we stopped outsourcing the overflow we used to have).  Recently, the hospital switched to Epic electronic medical record system, and within a week the transcription workload plumeted to probably 40% of our former workload --not enough to keep our transcription staff busy.  It seems the doctors/nurses/etc ...

Impact Of EPIC On Coding
Feb 26, 2012

I was reading a post on one of the other boards about what an EPIC or point-and-click report looks like and it made me think about what it would be like to code a report like that.  Was wondering if any coders here code EMR point-and-click reports and does it make your job harder?  I would think that lots of narrative and detail would be more helpful in coding.  I've never actually seen an EPIC report so I don't know.  Thanks.  ...
