EPIC is the beginning of the end... - depressed

Posted: Dec 20, 2011

Work for a MTSO who had more than we could do, EPIC on board and now are fightly over the few scraps... in a matter of weeks, things can change FAST... Time to dust off the resume.. for what it's worth.

It happened to me too. sm - MT2

Soon will be major layoffs, and not just in transcription, but in boding, billing and even supervisors in MR.

EMR IS GOVERNMENT MANDATED TO BE IN PLACE BY 2016 - MTs PREPARE TO BE SLAUGHTERED

[ In Reply To ..]
Every hospital right down to doctor's office will have to have EMR in place or face fines.

MT IS IN DEATH THROES. GET OUT NOW.

EMR is not responsible for the slaughter - ...

There will always be consults and reports to be transcribed - EMR does not mean the absence of transcribed notes.

IMO, MT is being put to death by cheap white males who talk other cheap white males into cheap MT solutions.

I do not agree that EMR is NOT taking our jobs. I have been an MT for 15+ years. Never have I had so much difficulty finding a good fit for employment as my steady, pay-my-bills jobs continue to get taken away because of EMR. I realize doctors CAN still dictate, but how many really will when they it is more cost effective for them not to. This added to outsourcing for cheap labor overseas and the US MT should find a different source of income. It is so sad for those of us who have committed ourselves to high quality work, thinking we would be doing this until we retire, when the reality is we will outlive this career.
You are sadly misinformed. sm - MT2

EMR will reduce transcription by approximately 60% to 70%. Information for all report types except for operative and some speciality reports, is point and click or pulled in from the existing medical records. You are then left with little snippets of transcription and not much of that, called partial dictation. It truly is deeply impacting this industry and will impact the services as well.

EMR (electronic medical record) is not the reason for the hit to the MT field. All the EMR does is replace an old paper chart and methods of obtaining records (mail, fax, etc.) with a computerized system. It is a much better way to access a complete patient record. I have been working on some form of an EMR since 2005. If you are working for an MTSO, chances are you are already entering the transcribed information into an EMR too.

What's killing us is the garbage technology being sold along with the EMR systems with the promise of being cost effective (regardless if it produces an abbreviated and/or inaccurate patient record). That's where the point-and-click and/or front-end voice wreck options come in... and that's where the problem for us comes in. It's just a matter of waiting and seeing of this "new and improved" method of documentation ultimately fails. There are facilities that have found it to work (however, I would love to hear how well it works once a patient's records have been examined by a malpractice lawyer during a lawsuit). There are facilities that have found it way too time consuming to be cost effective (it cuts into the amount of patients they can herd into an office each day) to the point where they have to break down and hire a scribe (again, another wait and see situation as to how patients will react to having a secretary in the examination room with them and their physician). And, finally, there are practices where this technology just will not work (I would think psych and GYN would fit in here).

Are we being hit? Absolutely. Is it beacuse of the EMR? No. Is it because of cheap white males (salesmen) talking to other cheap white males (physicians and/or facility higher-ups) into cheap MT solutions? Yup!
It's people like you who get hit the hardest. sm - MToo

For weeks people have been posting their personal experiences with EMR. It IS most DEFINITELY taking the place of a VERY LARGE PART of transcription. Many hospitals are laying off large portions of their transcription staff. If you refuse to understand this, you are indeed doomed.
you don't need to get personal - other poster

Go back and read the posts to which you are responding. It's clear you did not understand the point being made.

Not necessarily.....depends on the hospital - sm - Zorro

My account is with a hospital that uses EMR, BUT the docs dictate into the system, we transcribe it. It is an electronic medical record, thereby meeting govt standards I presume. Transcriptionists do straight typing, no VR. We save the report and it goes right to the patient's chart for all to access and see at the hospital. Now it was designed so the docs would do their own transcription, not us, but the majority just don't and use us and other services for their transcription. So some EMR will not kill the MT, not all is point and click. VR will take a lot of jobs though eventually, of course VR will never be able to handle the bad ESLs and of course none of us will want to do them so unless they start to pay better the ESLs are going to have some really awful reports in the future. I plan to get out in the next few years anyway but hope to continue to do it on a PT basis for gas money, etc.
This is not the same thing. sm - MT2

Most hospitals have that system you are speaking of. Epic is something completely different. No comparison.

I'm sorry but you are misinformed. It is 2014. nm - MT2

EMR and MT jobs - luckyladyinca

EMR does not have to mean the end of our jobs. Several years ago after losing my account to EMR, I went cold calling to thousands of offices for new clients, most of which either had gone EMR, about to, or had in-office transcriptionists. I have since gotten other accounts (including the clients that went EMR but transcribing other work). Lately, I have received a lot of calls from physicians who have gained insight to the fact that their time is more valuable than mine, doctors who do not want to do it themselves any longer. Just create your own niche.

EPIC - oldtimer

"now are fightly over" (??) Perhaps EPIC will transcribe more accurately and the MTSO will be better off.. just my humble opinion.

Yes should be "fighting", Working too much to make a dime...tired! - oldtimer

P.r.n. Or P.R.N. At The Beginning Of A Sentence

No replies to Oncall for 6 -7 cpl.  Look down a few ads and see the pathetic one put on by Lee Perfect.  She cannot get anyone to type and says "sad but true."  It just may be that the time for the MTSOs has arrived, meaning that sooner than may have been expected they will be begging for MTs to come to work for them and it will fall on deaf ears and very still fingers.  I think most of us who have been in this profession for years have "finally had it."
