mandatory overtime,,is that legal?? - tired

I have chronic pain and can barely stand 8 hours let alone a 1 hour mandatory OT...

I just ignore and do not do it - Have not gotten fired yet

I agree with you. When I do overtime the first week I find that I run out of work the next pay period so that does not make sense to me. Don't you have to work 40 hours each week before it is considered overtime pay?

I live in Cali and so for me OT is anything over 8 hours in a day. Needless to say I get OT very rarely.

forget it, who do they think they are? Be nice about it, but stand your ground, and document any exchanges you have (email, on the phone) regarding "mandatory" overtime. It doesn't MATTER if you have chronic pain or NOT - let them hire more people if they can't get the work done with staffing levels as they are!

Who knows, maybe they will fire you if you cannot, but if I were you, I would call and explain that you cannot work more than 8 hours in a day, period. If they want extra, maybe you could work a couple hours on your day off?

We are told extra 4 hours on days off and told this is not optional. Also, mandatory OT on work days.

This has been going on for over 2 weeks. I cannot do this anymore.

I dont want to either, but I also do not want to lose my job. I wonder if the CCMs have to work 4 hours on each of their days off, or not get paid when there is no work for me. Maybe then they would learn to staff a little better.

All this overtime is to make sure they stay above 99% for TAT or they dont get their bonus. I am tired of working my fingers to the bone so they can get a bonus. How bout give them a bonus based on their own merit? Obviously they dont have to hold themselves accountable for the errors in e-mails or if they dont staff properly.

One of the reasons I quit my old job at a local hospital after 8 years was that the manager kept mandating OT. (It turned out that that is the ONLY hospital left in my city that hasn't outsourced their transcription!)

They have a big legal department since they're university affiliated, and when I was hired it was stated that the manager can shift your hours around in order to "meet necessary demand to deliver patient care" or something to that affect.

Rather than have a bunch of MTs going round and round in circles on this, why not ask an ATTORNEY for a definitive answer and then get back to us here?

Heres how I look at it..I signed onto my work email at the beginning of my shift,,sorry I have a life outside this place and have something to do..Hum my son happens to be working right down the street and is stopping by..do I cook dinner for my son or work..easy choice..Will I do it tomorrow, yes if I happen to wake up early and can get on before my regularly scheduled hours..My days off I will not work i have doc appointments and even if I didnt I wouldnt work unless I happen to get particularly bored..I cant live for this job and like someone said then go into a NJA status for DAYS sometimes,,thank God this is a backup thing for me and I can live without work occassionally,,Cannot wait till the gas prices drop so I can find a real job...

I don't think they can force anyone to work OT or threaten to fire if they don't work OT. However, for every person who chooses not to work there are people like myself who plan to make lemonade out of lemons and work some OT. I can always find ways to spend the extra money.

All they care about is getting the backlogs under control. If 10 people work 10 hours or 100 people work 1 hour hour its all the same right?

I didn't think it was legal, but again it could be legal in some states?

I do know that they have probably lost so many MT's since the pay cuts that that is the only way they can get the work done at all!

They really are stupid. Give all these pay cuts so they lose good workers, and then have to pay OT pay - doesn't make fiscal sense to me, but will take the OT any time I can get it, just to make enough money to survive (husband out of work for 4+ years, with no job opportunities in sight)

Could the suits be so devious as to require mandatory overtime so it temporarily boosts income so they look like they are paying a living wage? Or is there just a supply/demand problem? I am sick of "mandatory" overtime! I know I should not complain b/c alot of you MTs out there are out of work and would gladly trade, so I hear ya there, but we are not notified of this OT until midday or at the end of the day, especially on Fridays, and we are not asked to work OT. I work second shift, so, due to the time change from PST to CST, after 10 pm my time, the last hour of my shift shows up as the next day. I worked 1.5 hours this morning and then my regular 2:30-11 pm shift, so I figure I should be paid for 1.5 hours overtime, but my calculated time (I recently discovered this on the current time card page) shows me as only getting credit for 0.5 hours overtime with 8 RT (Regular time) + 0.5 OT hours showing up on Sunday and then 1 hour showing up on Monday as ...
