Timesheet approval - Teardrop

Posted: Jul 07, 2014

Has anyone had a situation where your manager refused to approve your timesheet?  If yes, what happened?  My TSR or CCM or whatever they call themselves these days sent me an e-mail.  Apparently she's ticked because my timecard reflected 1.45 hours OT.  My BIG mistake.

I dont see how she can refuse to approve it - She may be mad about the OT

[ In Reply To ..]
and give you a huge hand-slap naughty, naughty for doing OT, but they have to pay you for it.

PS - Did you double check

[ In Reply To ..]
your hours worked? My TSM put me on PM for hours worked once, saying I had overtime. I re-added my hours and they were wrong, so you might double check.

Naughty, naughty - Teardrop

[ In Reply To ..]
Oboy, she's plenty mad. But, she's always mad at me about something. I wrote her an e-mail back, but changed my mind about sending it. Working the overtime was not nefarious. I simply was paying attn to working my 8 hours/day. I didn't start one single job after I had reached 8 hours. They were all long jobs, which is a pattern with my accounts. Still, she accused me of stealing work from others who had to file Remedy OOW tickets. She's such a liar.

Ooooh, stealing work from others? - That would make me

[ In Reply To ..]
hoppin' mad!!! I'd send her an e-mail, after I got my BP back under control. Did she actually say "stealing?"
Not actually, but a euphemism - Teardrop
[ In Reply To ..]
Her e-mail said, "Not only that, but by you working over, you took work away from others who were filing out-of-work because there was nothing left."

That is simply not true. I never started a job beyond my scheduled hours. I think she owes me an apology.

And document - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
If you don't get paid for that OT, that is illegal. She is basically asking you to change your time card to something she "approves" of.

I can understand why you are upset, but there is a different side.

First, TSMs have to get approval from corporate before offering OT. If you worked OT and it was not approved, you both get called down. If she approves your OT, she takes responsibility. I wouldn't do that either.

If you get stuck in jobs that take you over your schedule, you are supposed to notify your TSM and work out a way for you to lose that time, if overtime is not approved, such as taking an extra break one day, starting a little late another day, or stopping early, to essentially lose the extra time. The only way it should be an issue, is if you worked the extra time on a Saturday where the time cards close.

I'm sure she is out of sorts, because now she has to explain how some people filed Remedy tickets for being out of work, while someone had overtime.

My TSM drives me nuts, so I can understand your take, but there is another side that you have to take into consideration.

What a joke! People are OOW?? We have been having OT since after Christmas plus mandatory OT nearly every week for the last couple of months!! This company is such a joke.

The rest of the story... - Teardrop

[ In Reply To ..]

Here is her way of handling the situation:

She changed my approval (she always does that!) to Employee:  Not Approved.

She left it Manager:  Not Approved.

Enterprise:  Locked.

My guess is she's going to use that to slap another Perf. Mgmt. thingy on me.  Grr...

can you take a screen shot of it? - They HAVE to pay you

[ In Reply To ..]
performance management or not.

Wondering - anony

[ In Reply To ..]
How can this NOT be time card fraud?

How do you figure it is time card fraud? - She actually worked the hours

[ In Reply To ..]
If she was clocked on and not working, I can see how that would be time card fraud
Because the time card was altered by TSM - anony
[ In Reply To ..]
Jeesh. My bad for expressing an opinion.
Nobody got on you for expressing an opinion - I just asked your reasoning
[ In Reply To ..]
for saying it was time card fraud. I thought you meant on teardrop's part, not the TSM. Sorry I came across harshly; it was unintentional.
No problem - anony
[ In Reply To ..]
Don't know why or how TSM can justify this. Hoping teardrop gets paid.
I just found this - anony
[ In Reply To ..]
From an HR web site, time card fraud:

The more common term is *falsifying time cards* or *falsifying company documents*. In general, this covers any type of intentional lying on time cards or payroll records such as one employee clocking another one in or out (even if both employees worked exactly the same hours.) It would also cover an employee clocking out but continuing to work, or an employee clocking in but then not working. It could also cover a supervisor who unethically or unlawfully changed an employees time card.

For example, a supervisor who altered a time card to show that an employee had a 30-minute unpaid lunch break when the employee had no break, would be guilty of time card fraud.

Hope this helps. Thinking this would cover the TSM in this issue
Nice job, anony! - That should definitely
[ In Reply To ..]
cover what the TSM did, and if I were Teardrop, I would definitely report it over TSM's head.

Yes, mine refused to approve it several - former MM MT

times and would unapprove my approved. I quit MModal because of her. She put me on performance management a lot which I had never been on in my 30 years as an MT. Does her name start with M?

Timecard approval. - Teardrop

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, in fact, it does. And her last name starts with an S. I don't think she is a great HDSM/TSR/CCM simply because of the ABRASIVE e-mails she sends out. I don't know what I ever did to deserve this bull's eye on my back, but some day soon she's going to hit the target, and I'll be gone, just like you. I wonder...can harassment be proven? I ask because that's EXACTLY what it feels like working for her.

Working OT at pretty much any job without mgmt approval is a big deal... - Anony

[ In Reply To ..]
Just sayin... I know the HDSMs have to go through a long process to get OT approval from upper mgmt. I've always been told if you end up going over on one day because of a long report you start late the next day or take the time off at some point during that work week to avoid OT. Are you new to the company? Just curious.

OT Approval - Teardrop

[ In Reply To ..]
After reading all these replies, I can tell you that I am not new to the industry, nor to the company. I know and understand their printed policy. But I have never seen a CCM react so explosively to a tiny bit of OT.

First, I might add that I am usually under hours and often have to submit requests for PTO to make up time. So, this was a test for me to see if I even COULD work 40 hours. I watched each day diligently to make sure I had AT LEAST 40 hours. In doing so, I forgot to look at the bigger picture...the whole week. Guess I learned my lession. To anyone wondering, I was paid for the 1-1/2 hour of overtime. Thanks for the show of support, both for me and my manager.

Grounds for disciplinary action per Employee Handbook - Anony

[ In Reply To ..]
You might want to check out the Employee Handbook, page 38, which we all had to sign to work here. It says "Employees who work overtime without approval will be subject to disciplinary action." I have friends who run businesses and they would do the same to their employees so your HDSM is just doing his or her job. I'd be apologizing big time if it were me and I didn't want to lose my job.

Technically - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
At least I was told, if you work over one day, you start later the next, so that you have no OT..Now if your region is swamped, that is a whole other story..I try to work under 40 hours a week cause I hate this job, but I have gone over and my TSM has never said a word to me..

Disciplinary action, probably - but regardless, they HAVE

[ In Reply To ..]
to pay her the overtime. They can't go back and change her time sheet. That was my point.

How did you do that? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The only ways I could see you working nearly 1.5 hours over scheduled was if you had a very, very long report at the end of your shift on Saturday, or if you state considers OT as over 8 hours a day rather than over 40 a week.

If neither were the case, then you can't blame your TSM for following protocol. She may be going about it badly, but her neck is on the line also. Then there is really nothing you can do. Although, I'm not sure why you didn't just clock out if you saw a report that would take you 1.5 hours past your scheduled shift. They're pretty obvious.

If the above isn't the reason for your OT, how did it happen? Did you work off your schedule? If so, that needed her approval first. Did you go over a little bit each day because of a long report? If so, you should have taken a break or started later/stopped earlier the subsequent days.

Going OT without approval is a major issue with ALL companies and is quite a big deal. A few companies I've worked at unrelated to transcription would throw a hissy if clocking in 5 minutes before start or after end of your scheduled shift.

I go to great lengths to make mine exact to the minute. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
To the point of not starting a job if I'm not sure I definitely have the time to finish it. I was under the impression that was a big deal. My timecard always says 80.00 hours exact. Do we not have to be that exact? Does anyone know?

Although, not completely necessary - I do the same

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been over just a minute or two a week and haven't heard anything. As for being short, I think you can have 39 hours a week and still be considered full time. You may be razzed about it if you get that low, but it is certainly not as big as going OT.

I work 39 hours a week - and am full time.

[ In Reply To ..]
I do it just for that reason, so I won't go into OT accidentally.
Me too, aim for 39. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
It really helps to not accidentally go into OT, which is hard for me because my state starts OT after 8 hours in a day.

I rarely have a timecard without OT - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Even in times when OT is not approved, I always have 1 or 2 hours of OT, 15 minutes here or there a day. I have never been reprimanded or not had my time card approved, and have always been paid for any OT on my time card. I'm so thankful I have a TM who is not a witch about every nitpicky little thing.
