I would work harder if...This is for the higher ups - trying to help
Posted: Jan 18, 2015
Let's see who reads this board. This is a challenge to the "bosses" to try and improve production and cut costs. I have worked in many jobs in my life from delivering papers at 12, to retail, to public service jobs, the one constant in ALL of them is..a happy employee is a productive employee. Business 101 says, if your employees produce more, you need less of them, and that cuts overhead.
That being said I would be happy if:
1. You simply paid 15 or 20 minutes a day paid time to read emails, feedback, search for CC, etc.
2. Actually asked us what kind of work we liked, and then programmed things so we got it, don't say its not possible because I know it is.
3. Stop nitpicking. There is a HUGE difference between an oops I missed that and consistently making the same mistakes over and over.
4. A paid coffee break during the day would go a long way as well.
5. I wish you would go back to allowing those of us that don't need bennefits, the freedom to work when we want so long as we put in the amount of hours we agree to. I would GLADLY give up my paid time off as a trade.
Feel free to add, this is off the top of my head. If they gave a darn, maybe they would rethink the way they do business.

Educated the doctors on how to dictate please. I cannot believe that they actually do the things they do on purpose. People don't realize what they are doing comes through the phone lines and makes our jobs harder and reduces accuracy. When I ask that you speak with a doctor that for whatever reason cannot use the brains God gave him/her and speak a simple sentence, yet can successfully pull off brain surgery, please do it and not just say you did. Doctors that are constant problems, we all know them, should be held responsible for their actions, just as I am for mine.

A decent wage would help, but I know that will never happen.
Being that most of their overhead is absorbed by us - sm

If they could reduce their employees by making them more productive, then they could provide us with a higher wage, but it starts with cutting excess fat. And that is FAT that is all around, from the top down. There are so many people that I cannot see how they even justify their existence. Bottom line is we, the worker bees, are their bread and butter and they treat us like garbage
One huge problem is... - JOttS

the MTSOs have cut their rates back so far to their clientele over the years, undercutting each other's competition, that the clientele, of course, looks for the cheapest MTSO they can find. When the client gets charged only 9, 10, 11, or 12 cents a line, then the MTSO is going to take their cut of at least 3, 4, or 5 cents a line (or whatever amount) for the business. If the MTSOs were more realistic about how much they should be charging their client base (to offer their MTs a higher living wage), and if the clients were also more realistic about how much they should be paying for top quality work, then things could be a whole lot different for everyone. It boils down to simple math; but the MTSOs are afraid of losing their clients if they raise their rates. After doing a LOT of research, I see that many MTSOs also offer benefits, including health insurance. Well, those benefits also have to be paid somehow. So that's going to take a chunk out of what they're bringing in to the company. Now it's not that I'm taking sides at all, it's just reality and it really, really bites. Also, I am not part of any MTSO, but I've had my own business long enough to know how it all works. For years, from my own research, it seemed that for years the midwest and eastern side of the country paid higher MT wages than the western side. However, that doesn't appear to be the case these past several years. The total cost to clients has come down across the board, thereby undercutting the MTs wages now down to slave wages. However, if you can find a decent MTSO that offers benefits, that really needs to be included in part of the wage equation. This, of course, doesn't change the fact that we MTs are now being paid slave wages. Pathetic... again, another slap in the face to us MTs. If you stick with it long enough, you'll be living at poverty level if you aren't already... as I am at age 60 and with no insurance to boot. Woo hoo, lucky me... after all these years of working my "hinder" off... but I still try to stay positive that someone will hire me for my expertise... I hope.
It sounds to me like you need to be looking for an - office job

You would be great as a secretary, where you can take your coffee break when people come in to chat about this or that and you can call it "work." Someplace where you can check your email and get caught up with your Facebook on the clock. You can punch in at 8 a.m. and grab your coffee and talk about your weekend with your coworkers and even you're boss for 20 minutes before you actually start work because you're getting paid by the hour.
MT has never worked the way you described. If you didn't want the job you are being paid to do, you should have declined the position and saved your tuition money and been a secretary so you could be paid to so all the things you want to be paid to do and call it "work."
And people like you are why, this job has gotten bad - sm

A coffee break doesn't consitute sitting around BSing, not at my house, cause my dogs rarely answer back. I don't mind at all working on production, it's a trade off for driving too and from work. But I do mind being required to do a lot of different things and not being compensated, when the company I work for charges for that. I don't like to be taken advantage of, I have worked this field for a looong time and my wages have done nothing but go down. I have never in my life learned more, become better at my job, and taken a pay cut..But thanks for letting it happen, the rest of us really appreciate the fact that you are willing to be walked all over.
Not to mention the whole reason for this post - sm

I/we handle most of the companies cost burden. We work from home, my electric has gone up 25% in 1 year, my internet costs have soared as well, yet my pay has diminished. A little cost of living upkeep would be nice.
Nope no office job, I don't like dealing with people - anymore

You know, where they buy and sell stuff on eBay during the day, instead of running the office. Or where they say they're "in a meeting", then lock their office door and take a snooze.
you are incorrect - true stuff

"MT has never worked like that".
are you serious? i had a job for nearly 20 years as an MT at a hospital, and it did indeed work like that. i worked hard, but we were treated like human beings, not like assembly line workers. it really is possible to work your butt off, be productive, AND chat with coworkers and get up and walk around, all while being paid by the hour. i was making $17/hour when i left my job 8 years ago. i had nothing but amazing yearly evaluations, i was a good and respected worker.
this working from home is just BS. yes, its nice to not have to drive places and get dressed. but i'd go back to it in a heartbeat given the opportunity. but now, those places are all catching on and are just dumping their loyal employees because of places like MM. now you can't find an MT job that pays more than $10 per hour, and for that, i will not spend an hour of my day driving. i will stick here, continue to be isolated, have no friends because where else do you meet people but at your work place? i moved here to help my aging mother, but its a good thing her fixed income allows her to help me pay my mortgage, because i'd be out typing at starbucks are something. just one paycheck away from being homeless. and for that, i simply have MM to thank for. the whole idea of paying half for VR is just beyond belief, outrageous, and unconscionable.
MTs most definitely were paid for sm - Lexi

all of those things she listed back before things were outsourced. We had paid breaks and lunch. We were paid for EVERYTHING we did, including reading and responding to office correspondence. You also didn't hear a lot of complaining about not being paid for it when the rate per line was better. It's only my opinion, but when the companies all insisted we become employees with schedules carved in stone (unless, of course, it suits them to change them) and incentive pay, they took away many of the reasons MTs didn't worry about paid time for reading emails, etc.
I also think you do "secretaries" a great disservice in your labeling them with your job description. I was a secretary once. I did one heck of a lot more than drink coffee, gossip and play computer solitaire all day.

to manually search and enter much of the information if not all of it, on top of researching tons of CCs and manually entering them... yet not paid for them when that can take more time than doing the actual report! We are supposed to be paid for everything we type, and we type that whole section. And if we're not even paid for any of it, why should it ever count against us in an audit........
Exactly! which is why - I no longer

Manual fill in CCs even if they are in the database..Where is my compensation for that? And doctors, thank you for your help, by all means spell Smith (I can't for the life of me spell that) and then rattle on through joeschmuckaduck that I can't even understand, much yet spell.

Does Anyone Else Have To Work Harder And Harder Just To Make Lines? Nov 07, 2009Six months ago with the Q, I could easily have my 800 or so in 5-6 hours and generally typed over 1,000 a day. Now, I'm finding I'm struggling to make my 800 at the end of shift, even though I'm doing all the same things, typing even faster, etc. Is anyone else having this issue? I have a huge WE dictionary and all the other little tips and tricks and it's never been an issue before.

Are Requirements Getting Higher Aug 03, 2010Seems to me, "one year acute care experience" was the basic requirement to sign on with an MTSO. Then it went to three years. Now, a lot of places require "five years' experience." Plus, QA has gotten unbelievably picky.
