transcriptionists an average of $18/hour. How can this be true with so many on this site claiming to make minimum wage? Recruiter said I could pick my own schedule. Is there any truth to this or just flat out lies? I have a feeling this is bull.

You have excellent dictators who don't make mistakes.

You have dictators who enter all the demographic info they are supposed to and do it correctly.

You use a platform that is designed for top speed for transcription and editing, i.e. you stay in the same window constantly to do the entire report instead of bouncing back and forth between programs searching for info.

The dictator dictates CCs with the first, last names and title.

You are not required to do any unpaid labor, i.e. research, bookeeping, emailing, notes to QA, etc.

You use multiple templates that you do not have to edit and you get paid for all characters in those templates.

You are paid for headings, subheadings and spaces.

There is always enough work in your cue to keep you busy for your entire shift.

You do not need to constantly refer to multiple client specs to get the right format and client idiosyncrasies.

With editing, the format the clients specifies is the one that VR put on the page. No need to reformat every single report.

You have use of your own speller and expansion program.

Note: The chances of getting the above are nil.

This is my hourly rate as an in-office MT for a cardiologist (non-surgical). Granted, I only work three days per week, and it's still less than I made 10 years ago as a production MT for a national...but these positions do still exist. And I don't answer the phone or deal with patients "in your downtime."

First 18 an hour, yea, not unless your super good..I supposed it is possible definitely not for me..have taken an 13K paycut since I started this field 18 yrs ago..Pick your own schedule..hum when I applied I was told day shift definitely no problem..What was I forced to 11 am to 7 pm..talk about screwing your "day shift"..so close to retirement, so close..cannot WAIT

I was told the same thing - I make over 18 when I do straight transcription, but with editing it is more around 13 or 14. Regarding the schedule, They ask you what hours you want to work, but if you want early morning hours you more than likely will not get them. Preferred is after 12 p.m. and do not forget you have to work at least 4 hours on a weekend. Weekend hours start after 3 p.m. on Friday.

The recruiter can tell you whatever they like, but they are not the one's actually setting up your schedule - it is your HDSM or manager who has control of that. They will tell you that more work comes through in the later afternoon and they need to keep their turn out time in check so will not allow a lot of people with early day hours.

I was told when I interviewed, that I would be a tier 3, making 10 cpl for transcription and 6 cpl for voice recognition. I was told I would be working on an acute care account with a lot of consults and ops. I was told my schedule could be flexible, but I had to work certain days of the week and every other weekend day, but if I wanted I could work weekends as much as I wanted. NONE of that happened; not even close. I was a tier 2 at 8 cpl and 4 for voice; horrible dictators, horrible QA, lousy supervisor, tons of e-mails, had to work a strict schedule and was also told once, when I was in need of help because I was being accused of not putting in the right demographics, "couldn't I read?" And it was a software problem and I had to reinstall their program! I lasted for as long as it took me to find another job. Do not believe these recruiters. First off, they are not MTs, so know nothing about what we do and MM is just a wolf in sheep's clothing. You will never see $18.00 an hour and if you do, they will make sure it doesn't continue! Break you down in every way they can. RUN!!!!

Used to make almost 40K a year..could put the radio on in the background and have a really pleasant day..This years W2 was under 25. I struggle all day, half the time in tears of frustration, forcing myself not to throw the computer out the window. I HATE this place, I HATE this company, I HATE this job..But with gas at 3.60 a gallon, leaving the house from where I live to work is just not an option.

The cost of the commute is what keeps me here for now. Any commute longer than 5 to 10 minutes a day is just not worth it. Where I live, gas right now is 4.25 a gallon. Bus pass is 80 a month if I wanted to go that route, but that would mean 3 hours a day commuting to downtown or the major hospitals where the better paying jobs are, so I just stay here. No matter how much I hate it, I can't really afford to work outside. I keep looking for jobs closer to home, but the pay is just not worth it.

11 mins = 660 sec = 1 hour at $1.10 per minute that is $12 p hr, and if you can type at 1,000 ch + sp per hour solidly without stopping, AND if you can get decently long enough reports to keep on typing. Otherwise you are hung up adding CCs, and doing other admin tasks that take longer than the mini 34 sec type reports. So $18.... I wish !!!!

$18 an hour? Doubt it very much. I average between 13 and 16, highest was 17.2 and that was on a very good run. Of course that is not at the III level, or radiology.

When I first started out with MModal (after my last company got bought out) I was still on Patriot and could easily make $25 to $30 an hour straight typing. Then I was transitioned over to Dictaphone where I was maybe averaging $18 or so with a mix of speech and typing. Recently, I was out of work for over a week while being transitioned once again (because that account was losing business). I am now lucky to make $13/hour and I cannot type for 8 hours, so I average less than $10 an hour and cannot survive on this wage. I am extremely depressed at what a huge loss this has been and feel so hopeless. My health problems make it so hard for me to focus for long stretches of time and now I am stuck working 12-10 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and don't feel like I have a life. Really, I try to stay positive and don't enjoy complaining, but I just felt the need to release this frustration I'm feeling because I don't feel like I can talk to my supervisor or anyone else about it.

I thought they were 2 different services. Everyone is buying out everyone, so who knows. All the small companies have been merged I guess. I thought Nuance was out of New York and were the primary with VR. Maybe one has to keep up with the changes and be a member and pay the dues and go to the meetings with AAMT and be a CMT to keep up with the changes, even though you still get 4 cents. ...

I've been working with my company for almost a year now and i'm wondering if I should start looking around at other compaines. I graduated from M-Tec last summer and got a job about a month later, they started me at 0.055 cpl, then in December bumped me up to 0.06 cpl. . . . we have to retype the entire VR job because it is 99% WRONG. It seems like it is getting worse instead of better. The last week practically every job has every fifth word right but the rest is wrong. At some point it quits being voice recognition and is pure transcription. Detail. Then click on a job number and when page comes up on job view pull down, select Count Log file. THAT will show the job you are getting paid on. It will show the multiplier etc. Doesnt matter what the final line count is. That may not be what you actually did anyway. Final line count is the count they are paying you on, not necessarily the count you actually did. ...
