Has anyone actually seen Indian work? Is it really that bad? sm - sosari

In the past, it was stated by editors that the work was exceptionally good, except for some terms used more commonly in the US. I suppose they have more problems on the consults, which is why I've been receiving 15 minute typed consults lately, but at least I have work.

Can anyone objectively state quality of Indian MTs work?

How many here have actually seen the work they produce?

Have not seen it personally but I have a friend who used to work for MQ and now works at a local hospital that has a vendor which off-shores. She says the work is horrible and I believe her. Perhaps it was better in the past before they started recruiting thousands of new MTs.

We're actually supposed to let them go through now like everybody else without 100% QA (unless specifically requested to be 100% QA). I've seen enough that I can't do that with a clear conscience and do them 100% even though I get paid less doing it. Here's what I posted last month with an example straight off the report:

This is not atypical folks. Here's the kicker, this report already went through ILP QA once already.

Verbatim accounts notwithstanding, we all know that we sometimes have to gussy up an ESL's dictation the best we can to make a coherent report with tense/gender/grammar issues. An ILP has no clue and the garbage you hear from some docs is garbage you see in the report. It's kind of like human ASR sometimes.

I used to deliver reports to the doc's mail room and look at them. The reports would look something like this

The patient ___________________ comes in for _____________________

You get the idea. What was not left blank was just awful.

No American QA, however. Doctors did complain enough so they get a small American company that could not handle the load, so Medical Records tried to send the easy stuff to India and send harder doctors to smaller company. QA really is what makes India look good.

Years back when I had just graduated from the MTEC program (where I was trained to be an MT through a state-funded program) I had the opportunity to return to the classroom as an instructor. One day one of my students brought his grandmother in with her medical records, which were produced by a company sending work off to India. It was very frightening!!! Even my inexperienced student found big errors that an AMERICAN MT would have caught without hardly working at it. I found even more with just my limited (at the time) experience. Holy crap, this stuff is going into people's permanent medical record - a legal document. I firmly believe someday there will be more lawsuits/deaths/medical mistakes caused by this "great bargain" of off-shoring than it would have cost just keep and pay American MTs a fair wage!! Me, I just couldn't hold on any longer and still pay my bills and keep my sanity!!!

I've seen some work done by India that is as good as any US worker, and I've seen work done in US that is as bad as anything subpar done in India. As with any entity, you're going to find bad apples among the good. No matter where the work is done, it depends on how well the MT has been trained and how conscientious they are re the quality of their work.

I have seen some pretty awful documents from both US and ILP. The US documents have been getting much worse of late, however.

Most likely it is from MTs just not caring anymore, QA not being utilized as much anymore (FTR), MTs with no experience, or the MT schools just don't train very well, and even poor training on MQ's part. In any case, there has been a dramatic increase in errors in reports. Any MT can see this by just looking up the old reports in DQManage.

I cannot say what all work done in India looks like. However, I worked at one place for a short time that outsourced to India and then when the reports came in we had to listen through each report and edit it before sending it to the doctor. The returned work before editing was horrendous! However, I have also seen work from American services that is far less than good, too. I think you can get good and bad anywhere.

I just saw a post from last month wondering about what the accuracy level is that Indian MTs have to maintain. On Editscript, expected accuracy is 99% and tolerated accuracy is 98.5%. Does anyone have problems with Indian QCs (scores are good with US QCs), such as thinking that they may be deliberately marking errors where none existed originally? I've tried to copy my reports to check against them when I get Indian QC feedback, but the platform won't allow it. How does anyone else handle this?? TIA ...

Have been working for a couple of months for a local clinic and there are 2 large hospitals in our area --- one uses in-house transcriptionists and one uses an MTSO. I can tell without a doubt which reports come from which hospital. The ones from the in-house MTs look like a user-friendly, readable report, and the MTs initials are readily available at the end of the report. The quality is exceptional. As best I can calculate, the Indian MTs are started at about $40/week. This is not an error. I looked at both the application from Nuance (which can be found by googling) as well as the exchange rate. So when you see all the "extras" they are offered, try not to be jealous; they can't buy groceries with those extras. Apparently they are as dissatisfied with the management of the MTSOs as are we Americans. The question seems to be how many will continue to work for such low salaries and ...

I received a request to chat on my FB account today. The person on the other end was an MT in India and he was essentially requesting American MTs to subcontract to him, let him do the work and pay him because (paraphrased) "even if the client doesn't wish the work offshored, there are many ways around this and no one would be the wiser." The only reason there is an incentive running and there is extra work is because the Indian government gives their employees a week off for the holiday and we are expected I mean supposed to be motivated by the incentive to work it for them. No, I do not hire or send overseas ANY OF MY WORK, but I just received another resume from an Indian MT with her resume and quoting 9 cpl, which is ridiculous. The way I have been seeing it, with their inflated economy and greed, they will cost just as much as we do in the US and ace right out of the playing field... Why would I want to hire an Indian MT for that price? I would not want to send my work over there no matter what price and would rather go out of business then give them even 1 repo ...

Sorry - this was supposed to go down below in the Indian tech thread... One spent almost an hour fixing my problem and wouldn't give up until he did. I told my husband an American tech would've gotten rid of me after about 15 minutes and blamed it on my ISP. When you look on FB and look up MModal, the only people who like are Indians, and the only pictures they have are of Indians. So what does that tell you?
