Does anyone at MQ work on the Epic system yet and have - PAMT
Posted: Aug 04, 2012any feedback on how that is working on the DQS system.
My experience with Epic - MT

The facility I worked on for many years went to Epic. At first, it was just the ED reports, and then all of a sudden with no warning, 95% to 97% of all work went away. All acute care just gone. There is 1 outpatient clinic and a handful of dictators, and so now I bounce around all day. My production has dropped dramatically, it's not a fun experience. But I guess it's what this profession has devolved to.
Yes I believe it is because of what I hear the doctors say. - PAMT

I believe all hospitals, etc. must be on EMR by 2014 and Epic seems to be the one that is taking away all the work.
EMR just means paperless. They can still - dictate. It just goes into the

computer system instead of printed for a chart. EPIC is totally different and is very scary. It is taking away the transcription. Electronic Medical Records are just no paper charts. I still transcribed for a big teaching hospital/clinic for years that were on EMR. Never made a difference for me as long as they transcribed. It just didn't "print." We need to be aware of the difference.
Yes, EMR is not what we need to fear; EPIC on - the other hand is scary because

thats a whole nother ballgame and is designed to do away with transcription.
As mmodal employees, I would think the bulk of us are already on EMR. Mmodal's technology is designed to work with EMR systems and I know for a fact that the group of accounts I work on are all EMR because they are all in one Health Network and I was outsourced by one of them. We were working in EMR about 4+ years before the outsource and still continue to do so only now, they use mmodal's technology.
Trust and believe, MModal and Nuance both know - that EPIC is their competition..sm
[ In Reply To ..]
which is why they both work so hard at bettering their products and services so that hospitals will see no need to go the route of EPIC if their technology is providing them with all the services they need at a much lower price.
Believe it or not, these companies feel the same way about EPIC as MTs do.
Well with what these companies charge for transcription I guarantee you - PAMT

these hospitals will go to Epic to get out of having transcriptionists and paying these exorbitant fees to these big boys. Just because we dont make a lot doesnt say they arent charging a lot. My hospital system is huge and on DQS and they are going to Epic for sure. Now whether they will do away with all of us I dont know that.
Unfortunately the companies that market Epic-like products - are tricksy.
[ In Reply To ..]
Many hospital administrators are ignorant and these companies who sell the Epic-type software scare the hospitals in saying that EMR = Epic and they need to convert before the deadline, when the reality is that these hospitals most likely already use EMR.
Depends - anon

Apparently it depends on the account. One of mine is EPIC and the only difference is they have a couple of lines similar to this:
@NAMET@
@DATET@
at the top of every report. Other than that, it's exactly the same.

I am wondering if the EPIC or any EMR is so bad, the insurance won't pay because they cannot understand the text. I always thought our transcribed report went to the insurance companies for billing. Pardon the errors, my glasses are lost, I think in my car. I cannot see too well.
EMR is already coded when you enter diagnoses - Very simple and easy for billing.

Took a college course of electronic medical records. It was amazing and I was very impressed with it all.
I agree, it depends - Curious One

My facility has been on Epic for over a year. Our workload went down drastically in the beginning but then the providers came back on board and are dictating, the lack of adequate documentation and errors negatively affected our Medicare reimbursement. We do have some reports that are templated, but there is still plenty of transcription for everyone to do. I haven't seen those fields before, that must be something that automatically populates.
Made them up - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Those fields were just something I made up to illustrate what they're like. But the fields are used to "mesh" the report that we transcribe into their EMR system.
EPIC was AMAZING. I took a college class - of learning EMR.

I just loved EMR. Why?? It was actually fun taking the college course. First, you put in patient's name and information by selecting if they are a new patient, established or for a followup, etc.
Then you click and select sections that have columns on the left of the screen. You can put in drug information, pharmacy, followup, past history, surgeries. Diseases and everything is listed on the left of screen. So you pick Diabetes and then it opens up to which type and opens up further to what foods they have or what meds they are on.
The best part of it all??? It is already CPT code and ICD-9 for you and soon it is changing to ICD-10. Electronic Medical Records are already coded for billing purposes when you put in the diagnoses.
One of the hospitals in my area has an EMR tech who does nothing but takes their laptop around on a cart and follows the physician and enters patient information by clicking or typing. The credientials though to be an EMR tech is if you are going to school to become a PA or physician or NP. Although, I thought an MT would be perfect for the position. Salary is awesome too.
I admit, I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH IT ALL. Lots of memorizing where everything is at in the system, but then we already do that with our macros, etc.... JUST OUR PAY SUCKS AND WE ARE NOT APPRECIATED FOR WHAT WE DO.
From "medical scribe/scribe" to "EMR Tech" - Please answer me this question:
[ In Reply To ..]
So now they are requiring you be a PA, physician, or Nurse practitioner to do this job?
You said "EMR tech who does nothing but takes their laptop around on a cart and follows the physician and enters patient information by clicking or typing. The credientials though to be an EMR tech is if you are going to school to become a PA or physician or NP."
So when does the doc, physician's assistant, and nurse practioners find time to take care of the patient or focus on their residency? Sounds like a job with an extremely high turnover rate if they are only limiting it to those going to school for MD, PA, or NP.
I mean how can they focus on their studies and learning if they are busy entering patient data all day long?
I read/heard on here that the scribes were only making about $10 an hour to do this job. So now you are saying they changed the name to "EMR Tec" and are paying this awsome salary?
Maybe it varies from state to state because I have never heard of such a thing.
Please enlighten me. I am also curious where you took this course, was it at your local college or a hospital? Did your job require you to take this class?
Varies from state to state. - Hope this helps.

I took EMR class for 4 months at my local college. No MQ/MM did not require me to take a class. Seriously, you think they would? Hahahaha. Just teasing you. Getting OUT of 25 years experience as a transcriptionist. Enough is enough. Tired of being a low life for this company.
It varies from state to state for pay. My state, however, pays the highest for minimum wage and it is NOT Cali.
Most scribers have to be in some type of med school and be computer savy.
Qualifications to be a medical tech/scriber are: Ability to make one-year commitment full-time or two years part-time
Aspirations to become a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine(DO), Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Currently enrolled in BA/BS program or recent college graduate
Excellent English language skills
High proficiency in typing and computer operation
All I know is the EMR is the best, especially with diagnosis codes and the Superbill all filled out for you for billing. It is unreal as to all what you can do with EMR. Even has a prescription area to fill out and be sent to the pharmacy. All one touch and click and a little bit of typing. Just have to memorize where columns are located and how to get into different fields.
The pay maybe 10-15 an hour for some states, but quite frankly, after being an MT for 25 years, it sounds a lot better with wonderful benefits and being treated like a human being without this ASR report slapped at my face because of taking a potty break.

Impact Of EPIC On Coding Feb 26, 2012I was reading a post on one of the other boards about what an EPIC or point-and-click report looks like and it made me think about what it would be like to code a report like that.
