I didn't really understand what the whole thing meant in relation to HDS staff. Is CAPD replacing transcription or is it just a tool to make sure the docs enter all of the demographic stuff like billing numbers, DOB, etc.?

The CAPD has nothing to do with us as transcriptionists, our work flow, or anything else like it. CAPD is supposed to help physicians dictate and/or enter (i.e., point and click) more accurate, more specific information into the patient's medical record to help give the most accurate report possible.
If it affects us in any way, it will make the dictations longer since the doctor is being slightly more thorough and dictating more words, though I wouldn't count on that either.

...computer-assisted physician documentation? If so, I wonder if that's what our "exciting news" will be in October (which will most likely be accompanied by another pay cut so the greedy you-know-whats can line their pockets further).

I did a search for CAPD and found this article on the Nuance website, so it's not just MM. Sounds like HDS will still have a role:

Physicians are short on time now. Do you really think they want to spend MORE time on dictation? It's hard enough to get them to do it now.
This has to do with Fluency Direct, nothing to do with - transcription.

Of course they are working diligently to sell their EMR software. That's really not news. It's how they stay in the game, with companies like Epic out there. We already know our days are numbered...this doesn't mean much.
