So, Ok, starting a new job and curious to know, - if this is common practice or

or just that of a few companies out on an anallimb, because after many years in the buisness, this the first time it was asked of me -- to get my IDs witnessed and notarized.

Just wondering what's up with that?  Overprotective or wave of the future?

not at all new - emo

Some companies have been doing that for years, and I mean many years.

IDs notarized - nn

[ In Reply To ..]
It is a practice that has been in effect since the late 1970s early 80s and EVERYONE has to go through this process if you are hired as an employee, and it is not just MT either -- pertains to the entire workforce and your right to legally be able to work in the US

oh, well, that's scarry. Because I've never been asked to to - this before. you wonder

[ In Reply To ..]
why companies would stick their necks out by not playing that game.

Course in the 70s there was no such thing as remote transcriptionists where I came from, so was not necesary. You were bodily there with your IDs. But my past 20 years at home?? no company till now, not a one. strange.

but then, this profession and the company management it keeps is filled with weirness anyway so, suppose par.

as of November 6, 1986 - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I would guess that remote employees need to have it notarized, but I don't think in-house do.

Every employee hired after November 6, 1986 must complete an I-9 form at the time of hire. Employees must complete Section 1 of the form at the actual beginning of employment. The employer must complete Section 2 within three days of starting work.[1] The employer is responsible for ensuring that the forms are completed properly, and in a timely manner. The I-9 is not required for unpaid volunteers or for contractors.[1] However, a company could still find itself liable if it contracts work to a company knowing that the contractor employs unauthorized workers.[
well, they are not doing it since I've been remote as of 1988 and 1 company - required it in 2012. NM

I've been working since 1970, and have NEVER had - to have anything witnessed & notarized.

[ In Reply To ..]
All anyone's ever needed to see was my SS# and/or my driver's license.

Exactly the same thing with the I9 now (see message) - RemoteMT

[ In Reply To ..]
That's when working in-house or on-site, and the HR rep can eyeball your verification (DL or State ID card and SS card). What with everything being remote, the employer has to use CYA tactics; hence, having an unbiased 3rd party (notary) verify that, yes, you do indeed have proof of your identity and they have seen the original documents with their own eyes.

It's no biggie, really, and only costs about $5.
not all companies are doing it, though, obviously. - not saying its good or bad, just not mandatory by
[ In Reply To ..]
by all companies. and, right - no biggie to get done. But I had a company try to tell me ALL (slamming desk) COMPANIES DO THIS.

just one more mgr to not take all that seriously.
My bank notarized mine for $1 dollar. - You have to verify your identity and citizenship.

How do so many illegals get around this? - NM

[ In Reply To ..]

highly doubt they do in our line of work. but - NM

[ In Reply To ..]
in California and other border states, Americans let it happen in exchange for low wages.

They take their fake documents to a notary just like we do - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The notary can only go by what's presented to them. The illegals have DL's SS cards, birth certs - everything you need. The notary cannot check the database to see if they are in fact who they say. I do WC legal transcription and it is rampant alias-wise.

Times sure have changed! For my 1st job, I was - hired sight-unseen, over the telephone! (nm)

[ In Reply To ..]

Yes, you have to do this with the I9 form you send in. - Becoming very standard.

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

but obvoiusly depends on where you work and how they do it. - or we would all HAVE to. we do not yet.

[ In Reply To ..]
probably coming though.

Had to do it too - Girl4givn

[ In Reply To ..]
I just started two new jobs and had to do the same thing for both. My notary told me it's because of the illegal immigration thing - they're trying to make sure you are authorized to work here. Who knows? Just more red tape we have to cut through.

and its no biggie, just wondering why some do and some don't - thanks guys!

Large companies that have been raided for hiring illegal immigrants - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Over the years, especially the Midwest packing plants, have been raided for hiring illegal immigrants. Employers are supposed to complete the I9 on every employee. (It may have something to do with the size of the employer), but it is the law. The remote employers are having the documents notarized to comply. My bank did not charge me anything.
I've always done inte I9, it's the NOTARIZING that has only been - requested of me once. lotta lawbreakers?

With FTR still in play and all the other requirements made of us highly-paid MTs, when ASR 4 cpl goes into effect in February, does that mean 3 cpl would still be deducted if our "performance" had to be improved?  Would that mean 1 cpl or, as an example, if an MT produced 1000 ASR lines in one day, would that MT make $10 for a day's work?  TIA ...

Are so many of you intent on being miserable that those of us who are not miserable and who are actually doing well are called liars? Why are we "rubbing it in" when we share that there are good gigs out there, that we have one and that we are doing well and yet when you are all spreading your misery, hate, and discontent you're "just telling the truth?" I know why I've been an MT for so long.  I've had long periods in and out of the industry.  I'm on my way out for the final time now.  I've been interviewing and it looks good. My question is this.  Why are YOU an MT?  What is keeping you from getting a good job that pays you what you deserve instead of servant wages?  What is holding you back from your self-respect? With me, it's my bad temperament and my general dislike of people.   ...

Curious About Something,,,again
May 28, 2013

As I just got of a dictation with variable volumes and of course the eventual hang up with the loud dial tone, seems to me we could make a real good case for a worker's comp hearing loss problem. Not so much to collect now but to make an argument that they need to fix the volume on the system and maybe actually train the doctors to dictate correctly or be liable for lawsuits before we all go deaf. Too late for me, the ringing is staggering at this point. Thoughts anyone ...
