3 very important questions have surfaced so far - anon

Before moving forward and signing a contract for this position, it sounds like the 3 most important questions that keep coming up are:

1.  What can we expect to be paid after the training is complete.  If this isn't important to you then no big deal, but for most of us it was a very important element suspiciously missing from yesterday's email and no one should EVER sign a contract of employment (especially for 2 years) without FIRST knowing and being clear about what they will be paid for those 2 years. 

2.  All the coders who have chimed in have ALL said that you cannot find work in the coding field without being certified ... PERIOD.  Certification is another important point left out of yesterday's email - nowhere does it state you will become a CERTIFIED coder.  Instead, it states you will be able to continue onward with MModal in the coding capacity.   However, in the "real world" outside of MM, if after 2 years you decide to leave for another coding position, without the appropriate certification, your 2 years of experience with MModal will be essentially useless. 

3.  Those of you with employee benefits with MModal really need to find out if those will be lost when you are reduced to PT.   According to MM guidelines, you must be a FULL TIME employee in order to qualify for employee benefits so you might be at risk of losing those.

You don't HAVE to be certified to work as a coder. However, if you are not, you will be paid about 50% less than if you were certified. I know this because I was an MT for 30+ years and now work as an insurance coordinator and do everything that involves insurance, including coding (I say this because the coders will get on here and say I am a biller and not a coder. Yes, I do all aspects of the billing but also do all the coding.) You will, of course, have to be certified to work in a hospital. I just work for a two-doctor office. Let me also add, the job is very difficult. I found being an MT SO much easier and less stressful.

You are not reduced to PT. You get paid to do the training. Why else would they say you have to pay them back if you leave before your 2 years??

Let's talk about the most important of these first - this is a full-time job with MModal. Candidates will be transcribing part-time and learning how to become a coder part-time. Two part-times equals a full-time position and that is how the program is designed.

With regards to the certification issue - the coding profession and the clients that it serves are going through a tremendous change this year. New coding certification exams through AHIMA will be available in April and will focus on ICD-10-CM/PCS coding. The thing to keep in mind if considering a coding career is that the transition to ICD-10 in October serves to level the playing field. As of now it is true that most facilities and companies require certification of coders working under the ICD-9-CM system. In October there will be no coders with multi-year experience and certification in ICD-10. It is, for all intents and purposes, a level playing field for anyone looking to gain the education and break into the field. The opportunities only soar upwards from there.

As to not being able to get a coding job if you are not certified, that is, for the most part, incorrect. Many companies rely on certification as evidence of good coding skills but some companies take in qualified candidates and train them via an apprenticeship program.

Enrollment in this program provides a career path and an opportunity to take advantage of all that the world of ICD-10 coding has to offer. I have been in this field of coding for nearly 40 years now (ouch!) and there has never been a day that I have not learned something new or found new paths for my career.

There is a well-documented shortage of coders nationwide and the movement to ICD-10 and increased concerns about production impacts only reinforces the current estimate of a 30% shortage. This program has been implemented because, of all the potential training candidates out there, those experienced with clinical documentation have been proven to be the best candidates to learn coding.

The limitation of 60 candidates is due to class size restrictions and should not be misconstrued to mean that there will only be 60 candidates ever. It is quite possible that this opportunity will be repeated after demonstrated success of the first class.
