I dont understand why you all are having such a hard time making money. My mom makes good money. Whats up?

She told me over 50,000. I am thinking about following in her footsteps. Then, I grab her laptop and read some of these posts, and think either there are some pretty lazy people, or I should pursue something else. My mom said probably more people spending time on this site. :)

The average MT seems able to do in the 200 lph range with some going as high as 300 or so.

At the top of that range at 0.05 cpl (which is being generous), you can make about $30K a year.

Botton range is under $17K a year.

So a more "real" pic of the MT biz is probably in the $22K range a year.

I'm glad you graduated. That does not qualify you to make comments about people being lazy for not making 50K a year. Having never worked as an MT, you know very little about the job. Don't make a career decision based on what your mom does, there are so many choices for someone your age. Get an education first and then decide what you want to do with the rest of your life.

5000 lines a day/625 lines an hour at 0.4 cpl and there you go $50K.

Why aren't all you lazy MTs doing 625 lph. So simple. GEEEZ.

It may have been possible before AHDI, and big, company-gobbling MTSOs came on scene years ago, but today the only ones making $50K are either upper management, or delusional MTs who are so far gone, they only THINK they're making that.

I agree with you its a joke. Before all this voice recognition, editing, crap started, it was very possible and easy if you had experience. Late 80s and early 90s 50K was nothing! Most of the folks I know now that deal with VR and all the rest are lucky if they make minimum wage. Hospital jobs are nearly nonexistent. There are still a few doctors here and there that will hire MTs and do not use VR or any of the other stuff but they have cut back the hourly wage because they can get away with it. That also causes them to have to hire substandard MTs creating substandard medical records transcription. It has gotten to the point that it is very dangerous for the patients themselves. Somewhere in all this, it has been forgotten that behind all this transcription of a medical record there really is a human being!

I do work 7 days a week, but my second (parttime) job pays really well, so I don't have to work 12 hours every single day, about 4 days a week I do though. The rest are normal 8 hours or sometimes less. I wish I could go fulltime with the parttime job but she is local and has no benefits for employees, so we are just ICs.

jobs and even then my max was about $45K and one of the jobs was as an IC making 12 cpl (then they went to EMR and I was gone). I was working close to 80 hours a week to do it too.

Now I get the big old wage of 4 cpl at an MTSO. I made $21K last year.

I'm scraping by on $18K/year. If nothing else, I've - learned to be a very good SCAVENGER. nm

I've heard of more MTs NOT making any money than making money. I've worked from home before but had to work full-time from home and part time at the hospital just to pay the bills then ended up quitting at home and went back to the hospital full time because I could make more money working from the hospital 40 hours than working 60 hours between the two. I loved working from home but I couldn't make any money at it. But at the time I only had 2 years' ...

I have had it..The past 2 paychecks I made approximately $200.00 less..constantly getting work I have never done before from hospitals I have never done because there is no work in my hospitals, constantly having to run searches in DoQManage for reports because I have never done those hospitals before..then we are told there is a certain amount of lines/hour we have to do..there is NOT enough time in an hour to do all this plus transcribe. I type my butt off full time and don't make anywhere close to $2k a month. This is the first time I've gotten to see it since it's the first time they've had enough work for me to make my line count. They don't pay for spaces, plus they have a weird way of counting lines. Time to send out resumes. I am not typing my way into carpal tunnel for this pittance they call a paycheck. I just started about 3 weeks ago part time doing radiology in Powerscribe at 0.045 cents a line. Is there any way to make money at this? I'm used to making around $20 an hour, and I'm making about $4 an hour now, wondering if it gets better or if it is worth my time. Thanks for any input!! ...

So I have been working for private doctors for the past few years. Prior to that I worked for national companies doing straight transcription. Rates back then were 8 to 10 cpl, with 8 cpl being pretty low. Now 8 cpl seems to be where companies tap off. I have been using M*Modal for about a month and a half now and I was really trying to give it a shot, but I am really doubting that I can ever make good money with this program. Those of you who claim to make TONS OF MONEY TYPING.... You are not straight typing MTs under regular circumstances IF I believe you...and I don't. You probably work 7 days a week, all hours of the day like most MTs. You DO NOT work a regular 8-hour day, 5 days a week and make that much money. When did hospital jobs get almost as bad as working for a service? When I have had hospital MT jobs before, we were either paid hourly, or hourly base pay plus incentive. It was possible to make $22 to $25 an hour.
