.07 cpl, paying once a month with a fee if direct deposit is utilized? Geez, thought my job was hideous... I could literally make more money working minimum wage 40 hours a week. It is sad what this has come too. 19 years of hard work and dedication to watch it waste away...

Is this working for a service? Is it a gross line count? I agree it's not great but I do know that there are some great offices to work for out there. I have never worked for a service so I'm not sure about that route. I have actually recently found new work and although I keep hearing it's leaving we have not seen a drop in our office work as of yet. I think this year things will be changing but it has been slow in coming. Have you checked around for local docs that are still using transcription service in some manner? Both of my new accounts kind of landed in my lap so I've never had to go out and look but they must still be out there? I sure hope you can find something that gets you back in the game more lucratively. On our end, we were looking for a new transcriptionist a few months back and couldn't FIND one. *sigh*

This is your definition of hideous? You could not "LITERALLY" make more money working minimum wage 40 hours a week. If you "LITERALLY" worked 40 hours a week, minimum wage, lets say in the state of Texas, you would make $290 dollars a week. If you transcribe 1000 lines a day for 5 days a week at 0.07 cpl, that adds up to $350 dollars a week. I will gladly pay a small convenience fee once a month if it means I'm going to save some gas money not having to do all that driving back and forth to McDonald's. No comparison. We all want to make more money, and do less work, who doesn't? It's not "hideous". Its called the real world.

I personally think McDonald's could get a little stressful. First, you probably won't get 40 hours because they don't want to give you benefits or OT. Second, cranky customers, crying kids, a manager on your case add up to stress. The first time someone's order gets messed up or they are unhappy about having to wait too long, you will be the first one in line to get chewed on. Third, you will be asked to flex your hours because some unresponsible kid won't show up for work and you will probably be asked to work weekends. I think McDonalds are open 24/7 now. Medical transcription and fast food are you only choices? I think you are limiting yourself in a big way.

to do this job. A high school kid or anyone for that matter can work at McDonald's but I am pretty sure they could not step in our shoes. Lay down and play dead and say it is the real world, and it will continue. My sons are both in college and waiting tables and make more than I was when I worked for Mmodal up until last year. I'm still in the business but I'm working on my own terms and could not be happier!

I never said it was okay to be underpaid. Everyone has their own definition of being underpaid. Saying the way things are today is the real world is not laying down and playing dead, it's understanding and accepting that things do change and people need to figure out how to change with it. It sounds like you found the way to adapt to the changes. You found a way to stay in the business on your own terms which is awesome, good for you. But even with that, people will bash you for that because it did not happen to them. I've even worked with some who quit the job rather than learn something new or adjust to a change that might eventually have been better for them. And, waiting tables is different than working at McDonald's. Good for your sons, but some waitstaff make excellent money if they are good at their jobs and sometimes are able to work less hours. So let's compare apples to apples is really my whole point.

working 40 hrs/wk, minimum wage at $9/hr here in CA at McDonald's comes to $360. So the extra $10 pays for your gas if it's a local McDonalds... just sayin... Guess it's all relative. Like one man's junk... JOS

I have had it..The past 2 paychecks I made approximately $200.00 less..constantly getting work I have never done before from hospitals I have never done because there is no work in my hospitals, constantly having to run searches in DoQManage for reports because I have never done those hospitals before..then we are told there is a certain amount of lines/hour we have to do..there is NOT enough time in an hour to do all this plus transcribe. I type my butt off full time and don't make anywhere close to $2k a month. This is the first time I've gotten to see it since it's the first time they've had enough work for me to make my line count. So I have been working for private doctors for the past few years. Prior to that I worked for national companies doing straight transcription. Rates back then were 8 to 10 cpl, with 8 cpl being pretty low. Now 8 cpl seems to be where companies tap off. Those of you who claim to make TONS OF MONEY TYPING.... You are not straight typing MTs under regular circumstances IF I believe you...and I don't. You probably work 7 days a week, all hours of the day like most MTs. You DO NOT work a regular 8-hour day, 5 days a week and make that much money.
