coder make more money than MT/editor? - DD

Do you make more money as an MT or a coder in general? I know it depends on the certification you have and how many years and whether you are paid by the line or hour, but overall, those of you who have been MTs and coders, do you make more money coding or MT/editing?

Well, I know that some MT editors will say that they still rake it in, but most seem to be scraping by.

Considering that I made a whopping $12,000 the year after my employer was bought out by one of the big two, and chained to my computer 60 to 80 hours to do it, I would be making more even in the most pitiful and inconsequential of part time coding jobs.

While you are there, please see the career map, which will show you where you can go with coding skills. That is important because it is the reason we are not concerned about robots or offshoring taking over our jobs. You will need that information when the Little Bird of Doom shows up to plop her dire predictions on your head.

She may also advise that you not consider coding if you live in a rural, all-forsaken community like she does. She has a good point with that. If that is your situation, you might want to choose a school like Andrews whose grads are getting jobs with remote coding companies.

Just Google for the AAPC salary survey 2014. When you see that, keep in mind that their CPC course only takes about 4 months. Those are not bad salaries for just 4 months of effort.

and get out of MT for good. I'm kind of trapped as I am the sole caretaker for my mother, who has dementia, so I have to telecommute, no choice. Which is why I am still in MT. The ONLY thing that is making me hesitate about coding school (Andrews) is that while I can do the schooling from home, I am not sure I could get a telecommuting job afterwards. I assumed most of the ENTRY level jobs would start in house, and I just cannot do that. Are you saying that it is possible to get that first coding job working remotely? If so, that could mean a lot for me and mom.

There are more on-site jobs, but there are also some remote coding jobs if you look hard enough and have your CPC and CCS credentials. It's a reasonable goal if you're willing to work hard. It's definitely worth it.

with credentials at an in house job. No experience is really hard. If you can find an apprenticeship that is your best bet. Good luck!

It is very annoying when people say things like that to discourage others.

It is simply untrue that the chances are better at the lottery. You can see that on the 2014 AAPC salary survey, which includes new CPCs. Nine out of ten get a job fairly quickly.

Job prospects in coding are very good. Much better than in many other fields.

I know ... literally ... hundreds of coders. All of us got a job without experience.

Andrews students get even remote jobs. I got a job before I finished.

Everyone I know is looking for coders. My employer needs eight. We don't think we will be able to find them. We won't take CCAs, so none of the local college grads are candidates.

Your friends have been unemployed coders for years now, judging by how long you have been telling this story. Maybe they should have taken a better course.

I've worked from home before but had to work full-time from home and part time at the hospital just to pay the bills then ended up quitting at home and went back to the hospital full time because I could make more money working from the hospital 40 hours than working 60 hours between the two. I have had it..The past 2 paychecks I made approximately $200.00 less..constantly getting work I have never done before from hospitals I have never done because there is no work in my hospitals, constantly having to run searches in DoQManage for reports because I have never done those hospitals before..then we are told there is a certain amount of lines/hour we have to do..there is NOT enough time in an hour to do all this plus transcribe. I type my butt off full time and don't make anywhere close to $2k a month. This is the first time I've gotten to see it since it's the first time they've had enough work for me to make my line count. So I have been working for private doctors for the past few years. Prior to that I worked for national companies doing straight transcription. Rates back then were 8 to 10 cpl, with 8 cpl being pretty low. Now 8 cpl seems to be where companies tap off. Those of you who claim to make TONS OF MONEY TYPING.... You are not straight typing MTs under regular circumstances IF I believe you...and I don't. When did hospital jobs get almost as bad as working for a service? When I have had hospital MT jobs before, we were either paid hourly, or hourly base pay plus incentive.
