Why people stay in this business - sm

Posted: Sep 06, 2010

I think you all are afraid of entering the real world.  You put up with the abuse of pay cuts and the constant blows to dignity because you are afraid to leave your four walls.  I've been there.  Its not bad, its a little scary, but i'm making it.  MT'ing is a dead end.  i knew this years ago, but I was making too much money and was too comfortable to do anything about it.  Not to mention I developed one of the worst cases Social Anxiety.

Good points.

As for me, I realize that there have been some comfort issues involved with sticking with this MT at home work. For instance, I don't have to worry about the car breaking down and making it difficult for me to get to work, as I live where there is no public transportation and jobs are at least 20 miles away. But, even if it is a job paying barely minimum wage, it would be a step in the right direction, in my opinion, to get out and find something else before the entire MTSO ceiling falls in. I'm thinking that just before the holidays would be a good time to get a job at a retail chain, even if I am laid off when the holiday season ends.

Good luck - MTinNC

Good luck with your job search! When it's time to move on and you are not happy in what you're doing, you are right... any step out is in the right direction. I hope you find a great job CLOSE to home!

My situation is a little different, I think. To quote you, I am "making too much money and [I am] too comfortable to do anything about it."

My family is able to make it on one income but it is not as tight if we have the second income. My original profession (computer programming) is in the toilet in this area. So, MT is a great 2nd income for my family and allows me to be a home-working, home-schooling mom. As an MT, I make half the money I did in programming, but double the money I made working as an office assistant. MT is a great fit for my family.

I have no anxiety about getting out into the 'real world'....I've been there, done that. I am just comfortable in the life I have and do have a good income. I have no reason to leave home to get that at this point in my life.

I know two people who know computer programming and they find at-home jobs on craiglist.com. They said there is plenty of work to keep them busy. You may want to check it out. Good Luck!

Comfy here, too, including no abuse or insults to dignity, income still - Anon.

compares to what I earned "out there" for years and years with licensed and certified high-level clerical positions in insurance and banking. Fortunately, I can go back if needed. Only if the time comes, though, will I bite the bullet, enroll in some extremely expensive continuing ed classes and take an extremely expensive test to reactivate my license (believe me, AHDI's little certification isn't anywhere close), and set up shop again as an independent consultant. But I will wait until and IF that's necessary as I am also "comfortable" and not at all sure it'll be necessary.

Been there & done everything (almost). - worn-out

[ In Reply To ..]
I stay because my husband is retired/disabled, need the insurance. Live out in the country so only a sat dish. Lots of companies won't hire you with a sat dish. Had great accounts until recently; said if I ever lost them, I'd move on. Also have a 60-acre farm I try to run by myself, 80+ goats, most of whom are pregnant. Like to stay close at home to help deliver kids (record of 30+ in a day or two once years ago - way too hectic; lots of assisted deliveries), make sure kids are getting nourished, staying warm and dry (pretty much like have newborns laying around, except they are usually up and running within a few hours). Also need to plow, plant and harvest 30+ acres of hay, tend 50 fruit trees, mend fences; fix goat houses, irrigation systems, wiring, fix about 1000 flat tires a year, etc, etc. I try to do all the farm stuff cause I love it. My husband rebuilds antique airplanes as a hobby and to "keep busy" and keep his mind and body going, and he'd let me do all the work at that but I like being an ag-head. Don't make much money at it cause the goats are so spoiled. Hot tea in the winter (cold days). Several types of hay, take the herd for "walks", foraging for extra feed, cut down trees and haul them inside the fence for the goats to defoliate which takes just a few minutes. Well guess I'll go farming. Ya all have a good one. Grew up 13 miles from NYC and cut my MT teeth at a teaching hospital. As soon as I could, I moved to the wilderness/rural area. Kind of cuts down on MT job opportunities, but 70 miles to the nearest "city" and that's too close. Have friends with mega-ranches and I probably should just go live on their land, in one of their houses and grow some critters for all of us. It's hard work and we keep having droughts in these parts, more rules and regs, etc so it's getting harder and harder all the time. Just praying for guidance and waiting on the Lord.

I read your post and just had to tell you how great I think you are. To do all that you do is incredible. I am an animal lover and absolutely love goats. Used to have 2 but winters were hard on them and always said I'd never have another until I have a heated barn. I know, that may seem extreme but just want the best for them. That will probably never happen but I envy what you are doing. Hopefully MTing will start to get better and then you can enjoy both things again. Good luck to you and kiss your goats for me!

Winters and big kitchens. - nut case/ADHD/workaholic

[ In Reply To ..]
That's why when we added on to our place we built a big kitchen. 15X30, Had 6 bottle babies just before Christmas (most were my nieghbors and he's a over-night trucker), kids needed to be fed every couple hours or when ever they act hungry. Even here in Texas it's pretty cold out for the little ones. Could hook up a heat lamp, bur afraid it would get knocked over and start a fire, stop working and the kids would freeze or get chilled. Just easier to have them in the house where I can check on them all night. I guess there's enough of them that they keep each other warm in their houses. Lots of goats don't have any shelter at all out here. When we get a few drops of rain all the goats come running across the field cause the hate getting wet. Heck, they won't even step through a puddle, I have to lay a board down from them to walk across. If they have to step in the water, most of them "yell" as they go through. Such a bunch of sissies.

I suppose someday if I don't have a regular job, I can start milking goats (even though they are only Boer and Spanish, and mixes and not real diayr goats) and making cheese and butter, never tried it, keeping saying I'm going to, but figure the kids need the milk to grow up big and strong, and I don't have to spend $25 on an 8# bag of kid starter and it takes 2-3 bags to get a kid weaned. No money-maker there. But as they say, the LOVE of money is the root of all evil, so I guess there won't be much evil hanging around me, and that's just fine.

Just had a thought could send a bunch of kids up there for the summers to graze. Just let me know.

Absolutely not why I stay - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have worked in the medical field for years out of the home and decided a few years back to come back to transcription after many years away. I make WAY more than I did working in a doctor's office. I have a whole lot less stress. I have 3 children that are not really old enough to stay home alone, so I don't have to pay daycare for them. I no longer have to buy scrubs. I live in a very small town. Closest hospital is close to 30 miles away, which is where most of the doctor's offices are. So, I also don't have to pay for the wear and tear on my care nor as much gas in my 14 mpg mommy mobile.

So, no. It is quite the opposite for me. I am a people person, and sometimes miss working outside of the home but know that at least for now I can't because I will have to take a big paycut. I really would like for some of the people on here that complain constantly to get to go out and get a job in the medical field outside of the home and see how stressful it really is. I do sometimes get frustrated with my job as I have with every other job I have had, but I am so grateful to have it.

:) Messages here often suggest some of our skilled MTs - lead a WAY TOO sheltered work life.

[ In Reply To ..]
A few weeks out in the rest of the real world (as a sales clerk, for instance!) would do a lot of good, including a truth-not-avoidable comparison of incomes and of all those "blows to dignity."

But the OP's original post was about disappearing jobs. It still looks like this work will truck on in some form for some years, just not for everybody. A cut is definitely taking place.

Could not have said it better myself - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been out there in the "real" world and trust me, nothing in MT is as bad as getting a gun held to your face and being told to turn over all of the money in your cash drawer. Then there was dealing with the drunks on the weekends and the occasional episode dealing with the police because of the guy who tried to beat up his girlfriend then started throwing our furniture off of the 6th floor balcony when she got away. Or there was the knife fight that broke out in the parking lot that involved 8 people, 6 cop cars, 1 ambulance, 1 hazmat unit and the police helicopter flying over head.

OP: Please do not make generalizations as to why some of us stay in this business. I am very happy and make good money. I firmly believe that MT is not dead end. As the poster above says this work will not be for everybody and a cut is definitely taking place. Those people who want to change and adapt and learn will make it. Typing will be a thing of the past and it will all be editing. I truly think, though, that there will always be a need for editing of some sort to deal with the doctors who dictate something like this :

As you know, he is a 36-year-old gentleman with metastatic colon cancer who is currently off systemic treatment and is treated on comfort care...No wait, sorry. As you know, he is 36-year-old gentleman with ... Sorry... As you know, he is a 36-year-old gentleman with metastatic colon cancer who is currently on comfort care.

And no, I'm not joking, I have one who does EXACTLY that.

Or better yet, "Please go back up to Admitting History and add..." I even had one MD dictate instructing me to add a cc to another patient he had dictated into the hospital system.

Sheltered life - sm - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree with your comment about the "sheltered life." I've never worked at home (by choice) and the things I read people complaining about here are things that happen routinely in my MT workplace, i.e., one mandatory weekend day, overtime to cover backlogs, flex hours and all the rest. I am paid well, but have learned to take the good with the bad because I need the job to put food on the table. Trust me, fast food workers, waitresses and sales clerks who take abuse from customers (and bosses) day in and day out do not have it easy, I won't even go into the working conditions that so many people who work at home are complaining about. Try any one of those jobs for a while and see; I'm guessing MT will start looking a lot better.

Assumptions - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I was the original poster. I actually worked outside the home in a professional capacity for 20 years before becoming an MT. But, I do enjoy being at home, and do enjoy the more stress-free situation that working at home entails. I am a people person, but enjoy my "people" activities outside of work. However, going back into the "real world" to work is a depressing necessity at this point.

I think MT work at home would be great if the work were steady and reliable.

Why I'm an MT - jeannieb

[ In Reply To ..]
I am an MT because it's interesting work, and my husband is ill. It's easier to work at home now. I retired from a high-energy paralegal job. Not everyone who does MT is someone who is desparate and scared to leave the house. Give me a break.

Why I do it - anne

I suffer from fibromyalgia and RLS, those are PAINFUL disorders, and I am on very strong meds. No way will I ever be able to hold down a job OUTSIDE of the home anymore. That is why I do it and because I love it, always have.

Everyone tells me to apply for disability, but I am not ready for that measly amount I would get monthly, but I sure would be happy about the Medicaid that goes along with SSI, but I'm just NOT ready for that right now.

I was afraid I was getting to be a hermit started doing substitute teaching. You know what? I'm just fine - as a matter of fact, I have better social skills than a lot of the people who are in workplaces everyday. I live alone and moved recently, been here 2 mos., but I've already gotten involved in my community as a Red Cross volunteer and joined a book club, am starting another one of my own, and I get lots of social stimulation on message boards like this one and 2 political boards I check in on everyday, plus my shopping and weekly library events. Things are great. I love not having to drive to work adn wonder what kind of mood everyone will be in, etc. I did that for 3 decades - now I can relax in my own setting with the AC wherever I want it to me. I don't have to listen to anyone's phone calls while I'm trying to work, or smell gross lunches in the microwave. No social anxiety here. At this time in my life, I get to choose my social setting.

My kids have lots of activities afterschool, before last year if I worked a regular 9-5 or 8-5 job they would not be able to do some of things they do. Now though they can take an afterschool bus to their activities which end at either 5 or 6 depending on which kid, but that is only 3 days a week. Two days they would still be home alone then (10 and 12) and just not yet comfortable with that. I have been looking an outside job on and off for a while now, but probably won't seriously try until next school year, but eventually plan to phase out to PT again (I started PT years ago then went FT when kids were in schoool FT) and get my life back. As for my job my wages have only gone as high as .09 (w/o spaces so it was really 0.075), now make .08 cpl but manage to make $2500 a month so I am happy, suits my needs anyway.

Who are these people? - Not scared at all

[ In Reply To ..]
I've worked at home doing MT for 3 decades but in that time I've also gone to college and graduate school. I've groomed an entirely new and different from MT career. But I do MT because I still love it. It still pays better than jobs in social services. And being home isn't a matter of being scared or socially inept (oh pulease!) but more that I truly ENJOY my environment. I think you're generalizing a whole lot or projecting your own fears on the rest of us. I proudly stand up and reject your ASSumption.

Working at home isolated can also cause a person to become bitter - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
You capitalized the word ASS in assumptions, so i'm "assuming" you're calling me an ass? LOL. It looks like working at home has had an effect on you. When we work isolated, we tend to lose our manners, don't we?

But anyway, i've developed social anxiety and i'm hoping to overcome this so I can contribute something positive to society. I'm going into the social work field, and its not about the money for me, more of a passion. MT'ing has handicapped me in many ways. It was just a comfort to work at home and earn so much money. I cannot do it anymore with this salary and the toll it's taken on me physically.

What a great change in direction! Best wishes for your - worthwhile life as a do-gooder. :) NM

Hypocritical to now preach ''good manners'' when your original post demeaned an entire group of working people by accusing them of being ''afraid of the world''. You DID make an ignorant assumption, so why be upset when people call you on it. Scary to think of someone so insensitive and misinformed working with the public as a social worker (if that claim is even true.)

Some points are valid, but... - bkrul

[ In Reply To ..]
Some points may be valid, but I'm not sure the being afraid stuff is entirely true because most of the people I know in this field are independent and pretty strong. In some ways, we're superior to people who must work in environments with other folks hovering around in order to get anything done. Most of us don't need that because we're self-starters and don't need prompting from someone else to work. I really don't want people around when I'm working or doing other important things because many don't know how to focus, concentrate, stick to the task and get things done. Sometimes, people just waste my time and make things harder. I still love people, but there is a time and a place for human interaction.

I am definitely NOT afraid of the real world... - MY2C

[ In Reply To ..]
I have no interest in getting back into the rat race of an office/hospital/clinic job. I don't care what a lot of folks think on this message board, butif you can do it well, MT is still one of the best jobs around, even if it were a sweat shop, minimum wage, quickly disappearing occupation. I would still rather make minimum wage working at home than minimum wage wearing a paper hat or a Wal-Mart vest.

It is just crazy though how some MTSOs have run this job into the dirt, especially hiring people when there is no work for them. Doctors, hospitals and MTSOs all share the blame for turning a once great American occupation into garbage.

I LOVE THE REAL WORLD AND BEING AN AT-HOME MT - SillyRabbit

[ In Reply To ..]
All of the MTs I know worked in an office environment for years and enjoyed it. They only went home because it was an interesting offer that seemed like it would add flexibility to their lives. I know several who were reluctant to work from home and remained in the office until the MTSO no longer offered in-office positions for MTs.

I enjoyed showering, powdering, perfuming, wardrobe coordinating and accessorizing, and an occasional new hairdo. I enjoyed the the morning air, the commute and running into McDonalds for their great coffee. However, the MTSO saved unfathomable amounts of money when they no longer had to rent office space. They no longer had to furnish each MT by buying desks, computers, paper, pens, highlighters, etc. They no longer had to carry on the job liability insurance for the MTs.

MTSOs do not want MTs to return to the office as they don't want the responsibility or expense that would be involved.

If at home MTs are feeling any social anxiety, it is because we trusted our employers and really felt they were innovative thinkers who saw that happy employees were profitable employees and that they had everyone's best interest at heart. However, rather than goodwill, the MTSOs have only shown their employees ill will.

We just need to take a deep breath. The industry will not survive without good MTs. We are the proverbal 'nose' and the MTSOs need to stop cutting us off to spite their two-faced faces.

why stay - keephumble

[ In Reply To ..]
Like we all do at some time or another, the OP assumes that their experience is the same for everyone. This is a faslehood. Because I work at home does not mean I am isolated. I interact with others on a daily basis. There is a big difference.

I have not been away from the business world ("real world") so long that I have not forgotten that THAT world is, indeed, not the real world. There is very little honesty in business today, many people simply put on a front in order to present themselves in a certain way and ethics is a whole 'nother subject. One of the most difficult aspects of MT work is the lack of BS one can get away with. I find authenticity in this.

There are many MTs working and making a decent living. We each have a different experience/situation. If you believe that only MTs are going to be out of job soon, have you looked at the unemployment rates in this country?? No industry is immune to this at the present time.

So, a little humility might be warranted in this situation. No human is so all-knowing that they are able to preclude what another's experience is.

Why I am still here... - spell chick

[ In Reply To ..]
I am perfectly willing to get out in the real world. It's nice not to have to put all that wear and tear on my vehicle driving to work every day, not to mention the cheaper car insurance, but that's just a bonus. I actually liked the work until the mistreatment by MTSOs started. I am even getting disillusioned with the health care system now, but I do still believe in the clarity of the written word and that is the reason I still enjoy this work.

The other thing is that I am in my 50s and haven't a lot of experience doing anything else, so my resume is rather limited to this type of work (the first half of my career was done in hospital settings). So that makes it difficult to get a different TYPE of job.

I want to do proofreading and editing for a publisher, but they aren't doing that with people any more either, it is pretty much mechanized. Hoping to find a small, hands-on publisher, perhaps.

I just want to do my thing. Have to find someone who wants to pay me for it. :)

Jan 07, 2012

I was just reading the BOS3, which (unfortunately, as it DECIMATES the rules of proper English) more and more employers are adhering to these days.  VERY disturbing.  They want only ONE (oh, excuse me -- 1) space after periods and other punctuation marks (colon, etc.)  This will, of course, CUT YOUR LINE COUNT. They claim that this is necessary for proper uploading to the EHR, but we placed TWO spaces after a colon at the hospital where I used to work without any problem.  ...

Dubuit Stay???
Apr 29, 2012

Dr. dictates:  "Get the records from ***** Hospital about his s/l dubwee stay regarding any consults and any cultures from his spine, if available."  I'm just plain stuck.  Any help would be amazing.  Thanx so much in advance ...

Stay Away From Diskriter!
Sep 11, 2012

Stay away from Diskriter who has an ad on the Job Seeker's Board. I worked for them and it was THE worst experience of my life. It is a very big hospital they are referring to with lots and lots of facilities associated with it and lots and lots of account specifics. You need to have a certified degree as a rocket scientist to work for them. They chastise you and make you feel worthless. The QA will knock you down, and then you have to waste YOUR time to prove them wrong, which they always ...

Go With TTS Or Stay With Nuance? Sm
Aug 20, 2013

I saw job ad for TTs and they are offering 1st shift, M-F, which I have been trying to get at Nuance. I don't care who I work for since all these companies pay the same crap wages with the same day-to-day drama. What would you do? ...

Stay Away From Synernet!
Jun 19, 2014

Seriously, the LAST thing you'll want to do is have to work closely with the management at Synernet. I had an extremely bad experience with them. I wish I could give more details, but I am bound to keep quiet (it was an agreement made). I was not an MT. Just know that for me to have to be so hush hush should be a signal to anyone considering employment with them. :) ...

Trying To Stay Positive Looking For Job
Aug 22, 2014

I have graduated a year and a half ago from school, have my CPC-A and I am not having any luck finding a job.  I have applied to so many jobs and I get the same answer all the time of needing at least 2 to 3 years of experience.  While I am trying to be patient, I feel my skills are being lost.  You HAVE to be able to code every day in order for guidelines to cement in your brain and to become aware of changes.  I do practice by doing the Optum Code This! scenarios, (which I ...

What Do You Do To Stay Motivated?

What do you do to stay motivated and keep your butt in the chair for 8 hours straight? I've been doing this for 14 years and am struggling with this still! KA ...

TTS - MY EXPERIENCE - STAY AWAY
Apr 04, 2015

I read the posts on these boards now and again, but never ever post here.  I feel like I have to post something at this point.  I came to the boards seeking current information on TTS and like a complete fool, I didn't listen.  I was snowballed by the recruiter into believing the boards are a farse and it's a great and wonderful place filled with unicorns who fart rainbows  (obviously I didn't really buy all of that mess, but I was falling for a good bit of it) ...

Trying To Stay Positive
Jun 08, 2015

Here it is the beginning of the work week.  Oh how I wish I would have won the lottery. I wish I could have a Monday that was not all crappy dictators.  It seems like the week takes forever and my 2 days go by so fast.  I remember when I actually enjoyed, maybe even loved my job.  Need to be positive and push for those lines.  Getting up and knowing that you have MOT from now until ?  doesn't help.  Trying not to believe that the new hires got prime hour ...

Has Anyone Ever Been Fired For Demanding To Stay...
Nov 12, 2009

on a certain account or platform they are accustomed to?  In every company I have worked for, it seems like once I say I will help out on an account that is behind (usually because it is an awful account to do), I end up assigned to it...or I end up on the account that is changing platforms, taking a pay cut, and is total chaos. It seems so easy for everyone to give that speech, "just give it a try and things will get better," yet when I say it is not working out for me, ...
