How do you all stay awake? HELP! - flamt

Posted: Feb 22, 2011

As soon as I start playing the audio, I can't concentrate and I start falling asleep at my desk. I literally have to get up every 15 minutes to keep from snoozing at my desk. Proofing my work is a hassle because, again, audio starts and I'm falling asleep. It doesn't seem to matter how much sleep I get, how much coffee I'm drinking, protien I'm eating, or vitamins I'm taking....nothing helps!  It's getting so bad that my production is seriously slowing down and it's taking me every bit of 8-10 hrs a day to do even 1000 lines.  One time I was proofing a report I had fallen asleep on and realized I had typed the same paragraph 3 times!!! I'm so paranoid about mistakes I'm potentially making that I wouldn't be surprised if my supervisor starts questioning what the heck I'm doing.

I'm not a newbie...been doing this 12 years as an IC, just recently becoming an employee (I hate that someone else is telling me when to work, keeping tabs on my hrs, etc, ugh).

Anyhow....anyone have any suggestions on how to stay awake???? I'm even thinking about putting a tack under my foot just so the pain will keep me awake when I play the footpedal.  HELP!

Something that helps me a lot is... - Awake and alert MT

is I use a "clicky" keyboard. I had the same problem as you..I would fall asleep and near fall out of my chair many times while transcribing...(have the same problem watching movies). I bought one of the old IBM keyboards that have a very unique and audible click and that seems to do the trick for me.

May I ask where you bought your "clicky" keyboard? I would love to have one of those. They are the best.

Ebay. Very reasonable rate ... $15 to $20. They are the best aren't they?

Absolutely correct! Thanks for the info.

Here's What I Do - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, first, if this never happened when you were IC, perhaps you're subconsciously sabotaging yourself because you're mad that you're an employee now. Okay, I'll stop playing ShrinkLady.

That being out of the way, I drink ice water almost all day to keep me awake. No caffeine or sugar. Ultimately, that just causes a "crash." Also, I did notice that the times I'm stuck doing just clinic, I tend to start dosing off. That is extremely boring. The acute care stuff keeps me alert. Can't dose off there.

My brother literally couldn't stay awake while driving long stretches, so his doctor prescribed Provigil to stay awake. Maybe you have narcolepsy. If you don't want to go the drug or Red Bull route, I've found it helps to turn your head upside-down and gently and rapidly slap yourself in the face a few times. The blood rushing down seems to help renew alertness, at least for awhile.

A "happy light" - Daisy

[ In Reply To ..]
I use a Verilux "happy light" which is one of those light therapy beat the winter time blues lights. It cost me $70 or so a couple of years ago but has been more than worth it here in the New England winters. Just an hour or two with that on is better than 10 cups of coffee!

Good strong coffee and an occasional walk around the block (not simultaneously!) have always worked for me.

Have you ever had your thyroid checked. I am hypothyroid and when it is off (which is often), I get very lethargic and nothing helps until I get my doseage adjusted again...I have been suffering with this for years and had many, many adjustments to synthroid...just a suggestion.

Keep the room cold - starstruck

[ In Reply To ..]
My office is freezing so I use a space heater. When I'm having trouble staying awake, I turn it off so the chilliness keeps me awake.

I had my hours switched to swing shift, and I had an awful time. I agree with the above, lots of ice water, keep room cool, I have a noisy keyboard also, and I am hypothyroid, so make sure to take my pill! Only one thing to add to the above that helps for me, is peppermint or spearmint oil. (I mean the strong oils, like tea tree oil, etc) Dab a bit under your nose, at base of skull, or put in a diffuser. It is a natural stimulant. I couldn't handle the energy drinks or a lot of caffeine, it would make me sick, but this helped.

If I get to the point I am falling asleep I either - sm - ECMT

take a 20 minute power nap or call it a day go to bed (presuming it is late at night). If you are on the clock then all you can do is maybe walk around a bit, do some running in place, jumping jacks, etc. I read somewhere on here I think that pineapple is a real help to sleepiness (e.g. afternoon crash), so maybe try eating some of that and see if it helps. The employee thing might be part of it, psychological and all. I did the employee thing for about a year, hated it. Went back to IC real fast, works much better for me and my schedule here (worked split shift but still was not good and hated that I was "watched" all the time). Good luck!

The only thing that works for me after 10 years - ttmt

[ In Reply To ..]
is Nuvigil. I used to take Provigil, but Nuvigil is supposed to last longer (personally, I don't think it does). I have sleep apnea also, so that contributes to my daytime sleepiness.

I have arranged my desk to be near a window, make sure the lights are bright, and I have a TV set to a news station in my office. The TV is very, very quiet and sometimes I put it on mute. The TV is a psychological thing with me. I think of it as my link to the outside world to avoid feeling too isolated. I take a break every 2 hours and go outside for a few minutes for some fresh air (no matter what the weather). I drink iced tea throughout the day.

I work very long hours so this happens to me quite often...sm - KcupMT

Sometimes I think I'm immune to coffee since it doesn't really do much for me anymore.

If I get really sleepy I have to get up, go upstairs just to get the blood flow going and splash cold water on my eyes.

Other times though I have no choice but to take a 20-minute power nap with the timer set of course so I don't over sleep and sometimes that's all it takes for my batteries to recharge.

I've also been taking Melatonin Plus at night to help me sleep better and it helps except my hubby has the alarm clock set at 4:30 in the frickin morning so that gets a little aggravating having to get up super early for nothing - other times though I'm so tired I sleep right through it.

Caffeine! Also, I don't do stem-to-stern proofs anymore. - MTWordz

Instead, I try to check each paragraph as I complete it, and then a quick scroll to eyeball the whole page for anything that stands out. Then I send it.

If you still have to proof a whole page, try changing the size of the type. I usually type it smaller, and proofread it bigger. Another trick is to change the font while you're proofing, then change it back to the original font before you send it.

Also, I just proofread, I don't use the sound with it unless I'm rechecking a blank I left in the report to see if I can hear what the word was once I'm finished.

Stay away from sugar - All Ears

[ In Reply To ..]
I find that I can't eat anything sugary, as it will start me on the sleepies as soon as it wears off. Instead, I snack on nuts and dried fruit, get up every now and then, and if I absolutely have to, take a short power nap. It's amazing how even 5 minutes can help recharge your batteries and get you back on track.

But I second the suggestion to see a doctor, you may have a thyroid issue or be borderline diabetic.

How To Stay Awake At The Computer
Nov 01, 2011

I just started a new MT job with our local university and am thrilled because it's full time, hourly, with fabulous benefits.  In my 30 years transcribing, this is the best deal yet.  However, it's difficult moving from a home office to a public office because I can't stop and take a nap when I get sleepy.    Today I found myself starting to nod off!  I tried making "deals" with myself, such as "Just stay awake and then you can take a nap as soon as y ...

Wondering If Anyone Can Help Me Stay AWAKE!
Jan 07, 2015

I love typing for a living . . . the problem is that I cannot seem to stay awake! Mornings are the worst! I get to the point where I literally can't hold my head up and have to take a little nap. It's killing my schedule and line count! I need/want to work more but I get too stinkin' tired. I'm afraid that if I keep coming up short with my line count, I'll lose my job. Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions? Coffee is not one that will work for me . . . can ...

Keep Me Awake Please!!!!
Apr 22, 2012

I am in hour number seven out of the thirteen that I must work today at the hospital. Only one person covers the weekend shift so I'm alone with nobody to talk to and I'm about DIE. I've taken a break after every third or fourth report, just trying to stretch and stay awake but the sleepies will not leave me alone. I seriously think I will die before 9 pm. Is anyone else just doing their best to survive this work day? Why can't these offices have windows??? It's gorgeous ...

Staying Awake On Third Shift
Aug 10, 2011

I was just wondering how many other people work third shift and have such trouble staying awake?  I have been doing third shift for a while and it's HARD!!! I have a new baby and my husband watches him in the day, but I cannot seem to get more than 4 hours of sleep during the day and then I try to take a nap in the evening before work, but I am STILL having problems staying awake and I know being tired sets one up for disaster for mistakes.  I am thinking of talking to my physicia ...

Stay away from this place.  They have no technical support and terrible communication. I tried to work with them for 3 weeks and was never able to work without problems.  The owner told unemployment that my issues were normal technical issues, resulting in my benefits being suspended.  I also spent money on software and upgraded my ISP and she's saying I didn't give enough effort! It's been my past experience that when I start with a new company platform that after a few days ...

Why I Stay
Aug 23, 2010

As much as I hate it here, I feel like I am trapped here. I am getting ready for major surgery and need the insurance. I can't afford to go to another co. and wait for insurance to kick in, plus "pre-existing condition" worries. I could just sit and cry when I start work. NJA and helper pools for hours, plus I don't feel well.  Flame me if you want (usually someone does), tell me how lucky I am to have a job with insurance. I really am beyond caring. Okay, just my private pity p ...

like many of you, Ive been with MQ for a while, pushing 10 yrs, and like most of you, have gotten spooked by the changes of late.  Mostly the NJA and now the all ME work, which I can finally see, can really be not too much of a big deal. have the chance to either change my status, adding hrs and gaining some PTO, or making a total change and going to another, much smaller company.  Similar MT rate, less for ASR there, no PTO for P/T. feel afraid to make a move either way...is MQ stil ...

Why Do You All Stay?
Dec 27, 2012

I understand all the difficulties involved in trying to get into another line of work but why do so many of you stay month after month when you have no work?  It's not going to get any better.  I have had work but the work is so terrible that I suspect they won't put a lot of MTs on it because they can't handle it.  I've been doing this over 40 years and the work makes me want to cry much of the time.  I'm only part-time and think if I had to do this full-time I woul ...

Should I Stay Or Should I Go ?
Feb 13, 2013

So, the long and short of it.  I have been an IC for the last 15 years.  I have typed for orthopods, general practioners, neurologists, dermatologists, and have done 2 years of acute care (both in-house and at home).  After transplanting to TX and losing my full-time job in MI, I've been searching for that "perfect" transcription job.  I love being an MT .... love the work, the flexibility, etc ... and have been told on many occasion that I am good at what I do ...

Stay Or Go?
Mar 23, 2014

Having a hard time deciding whether I should continue working for MM until they go under and have to lay off everyone and I could collect unemployment or if I should just leave, thereby leaving behind all the stress and frustration that I feel daily. I do not necessarily need the $, but it does help pay some bills. If I stay, I would have to do some training for Fluency and switch to VR from straight transcription. I know my pay will be cut drastically with this change. I'm not sure I ...

Please Tell Me How To Stay Focused!!! Sm
Dec 04, 2009

I have done this type of work for a long time.  The last couple of years I have a terrible time staying focused on my work and not emailing, texting, surfing the web, etc.  I need the money really badly!  What is wrong with me?  I am not destitute yet - I keep asking myself if that is what has to happen before I can get serious and do my job.  I should be able to do 2000 lines a day but instead I am doing 950 to 1000. Stay Employed At TTS
Jun 15, 2011

So, from what I understand, to stay employed at TTS, you basically have to just work and agree with mgmt at all times?  Never question them on anything?  Is that the only thing they are concerned about??!!  No one has ever mentioned how they feel about production met or not, etc.  Not that meeting production would be a problem for me, but if they don't care about that, it makes me wonder what kind of company they are running if all they care about is being right and not being questioned ...

Stay Away From Advantec

If You Stay In MT Long Enough, You
Jan 07, 2012

I was just reading the BOS3, which (unfortunately, as it DECIMATES the rules of proper English) more and more employers are adhering to these days.  VERY disturbing.  They want only ONE (oh, excuse me -- 1) space after periods and other punctuation marks (colon, etc.)  This will, of course, CUT YOUR LINE COUNT. They claim that this is necessary for proper uploading to the EHR, but we placed TWO spaces after a colon at the hospital where I used to work without any problem.  ...

How Do They Stay In Business?

I've read post after post after post, in addition to having my own experience with Nuance and I really wonder how this company as well as M*Modal stay in business.  I guess even though people are quitting left and right or being fired for not having 99% accuracy, there must be more people waiting in the wings to take their places. Trying To Stay Positive Looking For Job
