Former MT wanting to change careers but lost - please some insight. sm

Posted: Jan 02, 2013

Hello, Worked as an MT from 1994 until 2010. Starting have problems with my hands in 2003. Becoming an editor saved my life in 2005 and was able to work on broken hands a couple more years. The editing became even more painful with changing every other word, pay went down, and I found myself with a repetitive stress injury (tendinitis). Lost my workers comp case, although doctor said injury was caused by being an MT for 16 years, however, judge wasn't hearing it as workers comp had a much better lawyer and doctor. (This system is not for the people, it is for the big corps and layers). So in 2010 decided to change careers and got my feet wet and took one course. I was set on a path to become a mental health specialist. Fast forward to now, I have a certificate in Addictions counseling and an Associates in Arts with a transfer to ASU for a BS in Family and Human development. I now have decided it is not the new career for me. Just the thought of working day in and out with people, trying to solve mental issues, and trying to dodge psychos stresses me out and makes me feel as though I will be drained. Why on earth would I pick this career when I prefer to work as independently as possible with few interruptions and I don't really like the draining aspect of connecting emotionally to people. I'm a loner and prefer casual encounters with people and friends and family and do not share and do not care to know about their problems. not saying i'm cold, but my nature is to be as independent as possible. Sooo....I have decided that a different career, one that is more independent in the health field with little hands on as possible. I have considered laboratory technician. I have all this schooling and I know it is an entirely different degree and I will have to almost start all over again, but my question is does anyone know of any lab technicians or technologists? I have read all you need to get your foot in the door is an AA and certificate, but having a BS is even better and i'm willing to go the distance. I just have a lot of fears. I'm 40 years old and starting over again! I was really hoping my MT career would last me until retirement, how the heck am I supposed to know what career to do at this age? I just don't want to keep starting over again and again, it is a big waste of money. Also, I don't want my supportive husband to lose patience. I just feel I am in the middle of a crisis because I am stressed about what to do with the rest of my life career wise, that fits my personality. Can anyone offer insight, or share their experiences?

You should explore coding; many on that board say it is great, but some say they are having trouble getting a job without experience. Consider billing. Look at digital scanning clerk jobs. Learn Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook since most employers want that at this time.

really? over 100 views and only one reply? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I guess no one else is in my same boat or can answer the question. Thanks for the little response above, but it is not what i'm looking for. Billing/coding is not for me, as I said, laboratory technologist or technician and also input from people who have left the MT field or who are considering it. I'm guessing mostly Indians come here now as those are the ones with the MT jobs.

MT2, you had no intention of responding to my honest post inquiring help from others. You just wanted to jump in with a self righteous response to chastise. Otherwise, why post saying you were going to respond? lol Good luck to you.

So nevermind, have a nice day ladies.

Indian MTs are not allowed to post here.

Many of us are trying to get out of MT. I guess you can search old posts.

Have to say your second post is a little bit rude.

I realize it was a little bit rude; I was a little bit - frustrated. sm

Not everything is a battle ladies. Some people have real problems and come on for sincere direction from colleagues and the little etiquette slaps don't help.

Thank you for the suggestion of searching out old posts "rolls eyes." I know, that was rude too.

and maybe that's why you haven't got any response, although the part about you wanting to be that was pretty well hidden at the end of your post, and maybe anyone reading had stopped before they got there.

Although I haven't messed up my wrist doing this for 22 years, I've messed up my finances. I too am a loner so I can relate. I'm currently 43 and have no clue what to do with my life at this point but I know I need to do something.

Maybe you could try customer service from home. I know, it's still contact with people, but at least it's not face to face. It's not an option for me because my dog barks all of the time so I would get fired the first week. Anyway, good luck to you.

There are great courses out there for sonography, which is in high demand. You would only be interacting with that particular patient and down in the basement of the hospital usually left alone. Pay is good.

NEW CAREER - gltrgrami

[ In Reply To ..]
I feel your pain girl! I have been doing this for over 25 years. I am tired, old, in pain and basically hate it. But, I am 61 and will be retiring soon; maybe sooner than I had hoped. I too like to work independent, away from the public. I have no tolerance for stupidity, which is why I chose this career. I used to make ossom money, fantastic benefits and I really enjoyed it. Fast forward to now: We make crap for what we do; the benefits are little to none; the dictators, well don't even get me started. I could go on and on. I too was thinking about pharmacy tech a few years ago. I started taking the course ($1400 through Career Steps) only to realize that I couldn't do the math (algebra) and you had better be good in it. Needless to say, I dropped out after about 2 months and lost my $1400 (which was my own fault for not really reading the material within the first 3 days.) At that point you could not go through the course and get your money back. For pharmacy tech, it really depends on where you live. I live in California. The pay scale for that is between $9-$12 per hour. Really! Nobody can live on that in California. I went online and looked it up. It's a tremendous amount of responsibility. You are filling prescriptions, under the guidance of the pharmacist. Any mistakes, and your fired. There is NO room for error in that line of work.

My suggestion to you would be coding. If you can get into a hospital setting, that's where the money is. In my state they pay 80K a year. Like I said, it really depends on where you live. There is also a website that you can check out to guide you through what careers are sustainable now. Google it. The only problem with coding is getting your foot in the door, just like transcription. They usually want you to have at least 2 years experience. No school offers employment to my knowledge. How about being a paralegal? They pay pretty well and you work semi-independent; at least not with the public. That is what I would do if I were younger. You can basically work anywhere.

I wish you much luck in whatever you decide.

thank you, but I think coding is going overseas - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Also, there is a lot of phone work and customer service involved.

Well, you think wrong on all 3 counts - Coder

[ In Reply To ..]
You have no basis in fact for those beliefs. Coding is not going overseas--there are very serious reimbursement and compliance issues working against that.

Coding does not involve "a lot of phone work." Some coders almost never use the phone and I have no idea why you would think that they do.

As for customer service, all jobs involve customer service, but you seem to be thinking of something else . . . what, I don't know. Lab techs provide customer service and have more patient interaction than coders. . . lots more. And frankly, if you dislike talking to people and providing customer service, what on earth prompted you to go into counseling???

Have you tried googling 'medical coding india'? - Plenty of BPOs doing it right now. sm
[ In Reply To ..]
It happened to the IT industry, it happened to the call centers and tech support, it's happening to us, and coding is next. Slowly but surely. Luckily for coders, the job takes more training than MT, e.g., so the evolution will be slower, but India is definitely gunning for it just the same.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsalnVQR_tQ

[edit]: Go ahead, "dislike" what I'm saying, keep your head in the sand. We're only trying to warn you. Maybe a good 10 years or so left for coding. It's simply a numbers game. India has 4 times the population of the U.S., so lots more potential lower-paid workers for the future. You better get to work on promoting some serious anti-offshoring legislation *now* if you want coding to avoid the fate of MT.
frankly.. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Read the rest of the thread to find out why I decided on counseling. Also, I happen to know a coder, and they bill, answer the phones, deal with insurance companies on top of dealing with patients on the financial end. Coding seems tedious and unbearable.

Being a lab tech... - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I looked into this loosely in the recent past. I believe most jobs want you to be certified (histologist certified, I think it was). It seemed like there was a requirement of 1 or 2 years of chemistry and biology. You would obviously have to look into it further. It it something along those lines.

Have you thought about checking into some online or telephone counseling-type work? That might be something that would work for you.

Because you have an AA, anything science related is going to most likely require 1 or 2 years of science courses. It's definitely possible. If your math skills are good, you shouldn't need remedial courses. If you need remedial math courses, you can plan to add at least 1 year of math onto the 1 or 2 years of science requirements. If it's something you really want to do, go for it.

good advice except - mt2

[ In Reply To ..]
anyone who refers to potential clients as psychos should NOT be working on the "helper" side of the desk in therapy.

True... - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I tend to agree with that.

I've taken math all the way up through statistics - so its out of the way. sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have an Associates in Arts, and would need an Associates in Science. Besides me core classes, I would be starting over. I didn't do too terribly with all the math and formulas, but it fried my brain and took over my life. There is a lot of science and chemistry involved for a lab technician, which can be intimidating to learn.

Math... - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Going all the way through statistics may not be enough. It depends on what exact classes you took. At our local college, statistics is only 1 class up from college algebra. For chemistry, you will most likely need calculus and trigonometry. You will have to look into it further.

[ In Reply To ..]
Are you an Aquarian? (Just curious.) First of all, you are not too old for a new career! You are still young! I felt over the hill when I was in my late 30s, and now many years later, boy, I sure see things differently. I think being a lab tech would be great except I had heard years ago that a lot of their work is outsourced by hospitals and the techs are paid by slide (or whatever unit they're using) rather than by the hour. That may have since changed but it's worth checking into before getting into training. I wish you the best. Don't give up!

There are a ton of sites online where you can take tests to assess your personality and what careers would be suitable. I have no idea if you've tried these or not. Some feel that they're not accurate - I'm sure that no online test is going to get it 100% right, and I find them to be a great starting point.

The Briggs-Meyers is a good one to begin with; I'm linking it here.

Good luck. I'm a few years older than you, and I was in the same boat. I had to get to know myself to know what I wanted to spend my time doing.

I've taken those tests, the results are counselor/therapist - OP sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I cannot see myself in the role of therapist. It would drain me.

Whats disappointing is that it was supposed to be my dream. This is what I was going to do straight out of high school, but never got around to it, because MT'ing paid the bills nicely. When my MT career was pulled out from under me, I thought, now I can follow my true dream. But the thought of working with the mentally ill just makes me grimace. So, back in a circle I go.

I'm taking a break from school and will probably volunteer with my church and be led that way, with no pressure and without further going into debt through schooling for a career i'm not interested in.

I have a lot of hobbies. I like cooking and baking, but without experience, nobody hires for that. I also love to mix and pour my own fragrance and make home made bath and body products. I make my own labels, have created a trademark name, and I sold about a dozen room sprays over the holidays and gave away a few dozen more.

If I could just cook, bake and make bath and body products, I would be happy. I would love to have my own food truck. These are just pipe dreams and no chance of career as I have no clue how to make a good living off the things I actually enjoy doing.

What did you end up finding out about yourself and what career did you settle on?

I love homemade bath and body products - got a website?

[ In Reply To ..]
I only buy homemade soaps. I have horrible eczema and usually get goatmilk based with honey. What do you make?
sorry, no - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Haven't gotten a domain yet, but it is in the future. A friend of mine does the cold process soap making with all natural products. I know she uses oatmeal, I will have to ask her what other natural products go into her soaps. She does not have a site yet either though, sorry. I will keep an update and post it here and maybe some of you ladies can give me business in the future? Dont know if that's allowed, but since you asked...

Right now, I just do body sprays, room fresheners and linen sprays. This year I will be starting on homemade car fresheners and room fresheners that you can hang on the door knobs.

I just give the products away locally as gifts usually. I didn't even have intention of charging for the room sprays, however, the person who bought them insisted on paying. :) All future endeavors, its just a hobby for now.

I could give you a couple websites where I buy the products, not sure if i'm allowed to post them though.
You should try esty. So should your friend - also
[ In Reply To ..]
you do not have to pay domain/hosting fees with esty like you would to have your own website. Facebook is another good marketing resource (and free!)

I paid attention. - grits

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't want to get all life-coachy or airy-fairy, but I started listening to myself.

"Whats disappointing is that it was supposed to be my dream. This is what I was going to do straight out of high school" - it doesn't work like that. Well, maybe it does for some, but not for me. I didn't know myself when I was in high school. I knew who I *wanted* to be, but that had no basis in reality and would never have worked. I've never been more miserable as when I was trying to fit into somebody else's mold. Almost nobody is same person at 40 as they were at 20 (or as they thought they were at 20).

I didn't suggest the personality tests to give you a hard and fast answer - "Here. Be this." I suggested them as a way to get to know yourself. Take more than one, with the goal of discovery. Learn where your interests and strengths lie, and just as importantly, figure out what you don't like (which you've already started). One question is, what do you spend your free time doing? For you, it's making things. It was the same for me; I love to create, I like to write, and I have always been fascinated by letters, alphabets, and fonts. Graphic design is where I feel my future lies, and though at 43 I'm ancient for that field, I'm working toward it anyway.

It turns out I had spent my life giving myself clues to myself, lol. I just had to pay attention, and when I did, it was pretty clear.

It sounds like you're having a hard time letting go, and I get that. But you can't steal second with your foot on first.
Nobody same at 40... - Transitioning out.
[ In Reply To ..]
Your statement "Almost nobody is same person at 40 as they were at 20 (or as they thought they were at 20)" is oh so true.

I planned on being a flight attendant (missed the minimum height limit back then), but seeing how passengers behave, would probably have been fired or arrested for slapping or yelling at people. Now, I am seriously thinking of enrolling in a technical college to learn commercial baking. Worked in a bakery as a teen and loved it. It will not make me a millionaire, but I would be thrilled with doing something I love and getting decent pay to do it. That is how I used to feel about MTing.
Good luck - grits
[ In Reply To ..]
and I wish you all the best. I think you hit on a key point here: "It will not make me a millionaire, but I would be thrilled with doing something I love and getting decent pay to do it" - finding out what you love to do and managing your expectations. Graphic design won't make me rich either, but then, I don't need to be rich; I need to be happy. :)

To make a career out of a hobby - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Start small. Use things like esty, local craft fairs. A neighbor of mine does jewelry out of her home--has a FB page, takes orders, in the summer sets her garage up with product and does sales on the weekend. Take some books from the library for ideas and how-to market/start up. If there's a will, there's a way. Don't shoot yourself in the foot before you even try.

Talked to any lab techs or checked their forums? - cindyoh

[ In Reply To ..]
The Indeed job site has a forum, I believe, for lab techs and lab-related jobs questions. Any college counselors in your vicinity, blood banks, tissue labs? I'd be striking up some conversations with folks near you connected in some way. Sounds like you have a very supportive husband and are not financially hurting. Me, I'm 58, no hubby to help financially and a mom with Alzheimer's needing more attention daily, so I'd sure like to be in your shoes. I'd give anything right now to have more time to pursue something else but not sure what to pursue myself. Anyway, good luck to you.

Huh? - ??

[ In Reply To ..]
What did you settle on? I've been in the - don't want to call it a routine, but practice maybe? - of re-inventing myself about every eight years. I did MT full-time for 8, taught for 8, and am doing something different now, but still doing MT part-time. I am older than you. Know what I did this summer? I was an intern. I am currently working more than full time and transcribing for 3 different companies. I have to pay the bills. But I refuse to do something I hate, and I WILL be adaptable enough to go get what works for me. My husband fears nothing so much as having me come home and say, "well, that was fun."

The way the entire job market is structured today, you have to keep building, keep growing, and keep acquiring skills. You took the right step in increasing your education.

Change a shift. Do shadowing. What's around you? Take your resume to companies that you find interesting. Make an appointment with HR. Do an information interview. I think what you do is cool. How do I get from here to being part of your team. Get yourself OUT. Network. Electronically and f2f. You have to put yourself out there. If you're willing to go the distance to get the BS, the world is your oyster. If lab tech is what you want to do, do it!! If you want to move into clinical research, do it. But don't just default. You're worth more than that.

All of that said, I am a HORRIBLE introvert. When I went from MT to working outside again, I thought I would die. Maybe hoped I would die. Being around that many people all day was exhausting. But the end result is worth it.

Huh?? I love your response. - jj
