Speech impediments - Alice

Posted: Sep 14, 2011

This is a first for me.  The doc is NOT ESL.  But, it took me quite a while to figure out what she was saying when I heard, "The patient lickscrapitus in his knee."  Later on, I realized that she was has difficulty with pronouncing some A's and E's correctly.  So, the "lickscrapitus" was "lacks crepitus", which is also a rather odd way of making the statement, IMHO.

Why don't the facilities/MTSOs notify the MTs when there is a doc on the account with certain speech impediments or other idiosyncracies in their dictations?  Maybe some do; I just haven't worked for them yet.

Of course, I'm the one who thinks, if the report is really so important that we have this nitpicky QA process, and the push to bypass QA but send a 100% perfect document straight to the client, why don't the facilities make some other arrangements for the dictations by difficult dictators to possibly be completed by someone who can speak more clearly.  I know, cost and all that, plus we are expected to be perfect, and so on and so on.

I'm grateful to have a job, just wish the offending facilities/MTSOs were more respectful towards the MTs.  I'm sure there are exceptions; I just haven't found them yet.

I used to work for a hospital and one of the doctors sounded just like Elmer Fud. Remember him, the guy who always ran around with a gun trying to shoot the rabbit. He definitely would make me laugh every time I typed his reports.

This really tells my age, but I can't remember the name of the duck. Was it Daffy Duck?

I had one, not ESL... - who was absolutely, completely

[ In Reply To ..]
incomprensible, and I mean nearly whole reports had to be left blank because I couldn't safely make sense out them. This was an orthopedic surgeon who talked like he had had a stroke or something.

Of course many doctors cannot be expected to participate fully in the process, as they are more precious than gold, and we are merely disposable servants who are just supposed to shut up and type.

I think I also transcribe that stroke dude! - Hayseed

First time I hit one of his reports I had to call the office...I was like, "Are you kidding me?" They told me he indeed had a stroke...and he's a SURGEON?! I think it took me about 30 minutes to try to get through a 4-minute report but I did it and now I can type anything of his with no problem. Infuriating at first though, but I do feel bad for him, so young and all.

Alice, I feel clients show respect for MTs by hiring us - to handle this problem. Which we do. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
The problem for us, as always, is proper pay for the job. Not the job itself. (People who have problems with the work itself, as always, need to fix that for themselves.)

Also, please don't forget that clients go shopping for companies that will provide services they need, and then pay for them. That IS how they handle this issue--hire pros to do the job.

BTW, it does happen that facilities and MTSOs occasionally assign really difficult reports to MTs who are able to do the job. Also, many able MTs who can choose their own work pull more than their share of these people specifically because they know others are foundering with them. Guess how I know in both cases. It's okay, though. Adequate speed usually comes with increased experience with each dictator.

I agree with above poster, plus - sm

why should they take the time to notify us of a speech impediment? You'll know the issue when you start the report. Just do it well. You expect everything handed to you on a silver platter?

is stuttering an impediment? - hmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
I am assigned a very difficult doctor to handle. He likes things to be done just so. He doesn't suffer fools lightly. I have to be extremely careful and take extra steps to ensure his reports are handled the way he expects them to be. I don't get paid extra for this service.

What I have is job security. He has become more relaxed in his dictation, and the bonus is he no longer stutters. The other MTs don't even know who he is. They don't know he is the one who sits as the head of the board and makes the decision which MTSO the account uses and has caused MTs to lose their jobs. The other MTs on the account have job security because this doctor no longer stutters.

I think that is one of the best feelings I could ever have without a word of thanks ever being given for a job well done.

It's just so sad anymore - when we expect the

we have dictators who compose sentences such as this: "A xx-year-old female accompanied by daughter in secondary to within the last week has run out of her amlodipine, Prozac and clonidine anywhere from 3-5 days ago each of these." I kid you not, that is what this doctor said.  American doc, speaking clear English.  Now tell me, what am I supposed to do with that?  It is a verbatim account, but the last time I let some gobbly gook like that go through I got chewed out for it (!) ...

All Work Going To Speech

I am hearing from some that by 2014 all medical transcription, maybe just the at home work is required by law to go to speech recognition?  Has anyone else heard this?  I figured it is just up to the individual companies to decide whether they choose for the work to be done straight or by speech recognition.  If this is so, all of us at home workers won't have a choice and if we want to do medical work we will be forced into speech.  ...

Help! My Corporation Just Went To Speech Recognition!

Speech Wreck Suggestion
Sep 02, 2010

I have tried to explain to manager that the program is slow, and does not seem to ever correct a lot of "normal" dictation, so I have come here to ask a question of you.  I feel that we are not getting enough keystroke count for these jobs.  I have had lengthy jobs with small actual counts because of all the repairing (MEing), and pickiing up of nearby conversations, using markers judiciously as requested.  None of these markers are included in the count that I can see, but they a ...
