What is exactly is VR/speech recognition? - MDLady

Hello,

I am a new MT and learned transcription from cassette tapes and Express Scribe. Can someone tell me what voice recognition is and how is it used in transcription?

Wow, don't take this the wrong way because it is not directed as a slam to you. Who was your instructor or did you teach yourself? It is almost impossible to believe that someone actually trained you and never mentioned VR/Speech recognition. It is totally changing the Medical Transcription field.

To answer your question it is software that the dictator dictates into. That software recognizes the voice/speech that is being spoken and creates a written report. There are numerous different software programs out there and some work better than others. None are perfect and that is why you now see Medical Transcriptionists working as editors. Each dictation needs to be listened and edited for errors. Some times you will also find you need to reformat the entire document. It can and sometimes does take just as long to edit a report as it would to transcribe it and editors get on average around 4 cents a line. If you get a good program and a good docs who are willing to work with the program to make it work, it isn't that bad but if you have a program or a doc that isn't that great, it can be a nightmare pay wise.

LOLOL! I understand. I guess I am ancient. I graduated from college last year with degree in Office Administration w/major in Medical Transcription. I chose not to go to those MT schools because I wanted to leave my options open for a job in case the MT thing did not work out. I learned transcription the old way, from tapes. My transcription classes consisted of cassette tapes of doctors' dictation along with books and a dictaphone. I used the dictaphone to listen to and I transcribed the four basic reports, sent them to my teacher, and my work would be checked. That is all I knew until I did an internship and was taught how to use Express Scribe. I lucked up after graduation and got a job in a hospital transcribing and we use the same method; tapes. It is amazing to me that I was able to get a job in this field. I obviously have a lot to learn. And to think, I wanted to work at home someday. :)

you made most of your own luck through smart choices. Regarding working at home? Think positive--the planet's running out of petroleum, fast. Even if we were retooling to churn out thousands of electric cars right now, I'm pretty sure there'd still be plenty of remote work in a lot of fields in future. (And we're not.)

When I get nothing but VR reports and have to change every second word, it is so hard getting even minimum wage and it is just so much more exhausting than regular typing where you get into a rhythm and I get so many bad dictators doing VR. On a report, under "social history", the speaker says the patient lives alone with some pets. Speaker dooesn't actually state anything further regarding pets, but the document says "7 cats" right after where it says patient lives with pets. Where did speech recognition get the fanciful nondictated " 7 cats" from? Does it mean that speech recognition probably heard a previous report in which another patient had 7 cats? Is DocQvoice only a speech recognition system? My job is transitioning to from straight transcription to speech recognition. This is what is being offered: 0.045 per line A line is defined as 2 edited lines = 1 regular MT typing line of 65 characters So in summary, 1. that I THINK might be 3M- I don't know, everyone here at the hospital just calls it BESR- they say it is a new program but it just seems almost like some generic deal. I have been straight transcribing for many moons. Then got into doing QA and a lot of the reports I get are straight editing of speech recognition rather than doing QA. Why is transcription done for a full report paid any differently than transcription done in a speech report?
