New to Webmedx and speech rec for that! - MTme

Posted: Nov 01, 2011

Ok very new to WBX and speech rec and not sure what to think!   How long did it take others to get accustomed to their platform and editing VR?

I could transcribe at least 200+ lph at my previous job via straight transcription, but my highest since working here has only been 100 ughhhh!

I'm so unsure of this!  Guess I'm looking for encouragement that it will get better and/or easier!!  Any tips?  I just downloaded the free trial of IT7 and am hoping that that will help out...  I hated the shorthand.

You've not been there very long, in your own words. There is always a learning curve with any company, I don't care how long one has worked in this field or how much they can produce in a day.

I think you will find that IT works very well with the Webmedx. I would remind you to open IT first and then Enterprise. If you don't you will cut off some of the functionality of the Enterprise software.

As far as tips, I don't know what it is that you do so I can't very well give you any tips specific to Webmedx itself. When you first get a report, go over it without the voice and correct any formatting issues you see. That way when you start proofing it to sound, you wom't be bothered with the formatting. When you see something like this: The patient was seen and examined today. She is a 20-year-old white female... Where there is no space after the period is generally a paragraph break. You can fix that when you fix the formatting issues. Speed the sound up a bit ONLY AFTER you are familiar with your dictators. That helps save some time. Some people have commands set up in IT to help with the VR. I, myself, neve found them particularly helpful and usually don't use IT when doing VR. There is also an IT email group that you can be added to. Just email your trainer and she can add you.

I guess that is all I have for you, except best wishes that you are successful in your new job.

Have you used an expander before? We all have - our own ways, but

[ In Reply To ..]
I personally find having a lot of corrections programmed into my expander extremely helpful. Hitting L twice between two words drops a period to the left, caps the word I'm at, and jumps the cursor to the word after that. Hitting period (..) twice at a comma or some such between two words changes the punctuation mark to a period, caps the word to the right, and jumps the cursor to the word after that. And so one, by the dozens. After a little practice, muscle memory takes over for the fingers, leaving my eyes free to scan for other errors
BTW, don't know how it is on your accounts, but our platform is currently semidysfunctional while we await transition back to a good one, part of the merger with Nuance. The peculiar problems that occur on and off, and its relatively primitive abilities, can slow me down considerably and keep me from really getting and staying "in the groove." Something that will pass.

Thank you both so much! - MTme

I guess I am just overwhelmed. I really thought after 10 years of transcribing (6 with my last employer) that the transition would not be that bad... was I ever wrong!

VR is a lot harder than I thought! I have always used IT V Pro but just as an "expander." Now I see how much more it can do for you. I have put in a couple command entries like you both have mentioned and it does help, but just so tedious and time consuming. I sometimes wonder if it would be just as easy to transcribe the whole report rather than try and correct what is there. I don't know!

I will give it more time and try not to be so hard on myself while I'm at it :)

Thanks to you both!!

Speeding up VR editing - with IT

requires a new set of glossaries with entries and I understand your frustration. It is a new investment of time.  For these glossary you would mainly use the items of the new Instant Text 7 Command menu.

It takes indeed time to make an inventory of the most frequently occurring mistakes in VR drafts. You can start with simple things that you need to do all the time such as add a comma, add a comma + and, add a comma + but, add a hyphen, move cursor to different positions, beginning or end of paragraph, etc.

All this can be done with easy-to-type shortcuts of your choosing.

To chain several commands you can record the keyboard shortcuts in the specific platform you are using. You would do that when you want to create a more complex glossary entry. It is like creating a macro: by trial and error you will get it right. :-)

Once you have created a good editing glossary you can combine it with your existing glossaries by including it. The "expander" glossaries are still useful as you want to have the phrases of your doctors and the continuations right at your fingertips in case you need to clarify incoherent sentences or retype them.

Webmedx Presents Award To Providers For Front-end Speech Implementation
Sep 17, 2010

This article was from July, I just found it. It may have been addressed back then, and if so I missed it. Here is one part of the article: "Currently in use at several Webmedx customer sites, the ability for physicians to capture documentation using front-end voice recognition and then self-edit their work reduces costs by 60% for every transcribed report." This is the link to the article: http://www.healthcareitnews.com/press-release/webmedx-presents-award-providers-front-end-speech-implem ...

You Know, MQs Speech Wreck Is Bad Enough
Nov 01, 2010

we have dictators who compose sentences such as this: "A xx-year-old female accompanied by daughter in secondary to within the last week has run out of her amlodipine, Prozac and clonidine anywhere from 3-5 days ago each of these." I kid you not, that is what this doctor said.  American doc, speaking clear English.  Now tell me, what am I supposed to do with that?  It is a verbatim account, but the last time I let some gobbly gook like that go through I got chewed out for it (!) ...

Speech Impediments
Sep 14, 2011

This is a first for me.  The doc is NOT ESL.  But, it took me quite a while to figure out what she was saying when I heard, "The patient lickscrapitus in his knee."  Later on, I realized that she was has difficulty with pronouncing some A's and E's correctly.  So, the "lickscrapitus" was "lacks crepitus", which is also a rather odd way of making the statement, IMHO. Why don't the facilities/MTSOs notify the MTs when there is a doc on the account with certain s ...

I am hearing from some that by 2014 all medical transcription, maybe just the at home work is required by law to go to speech recognition?  Has anyone else heard this?  I figured it is just up to the individual companies to decide whether they choose for the work to be done straight or by speech recognition.  If this is so, all of us at home workers won't have a choice and if we want to do medical work we will be forced into speech.  ...

Speech Recognition Editing Course

I graduated in May from the MT program at a local two-year college and, naturally, it's nearly impossible to find a medical transcription job as a newbie.
