All work going to speech - Trena

Posted: Jan 04, 2013

I am hearing from some that by 2014 all medical transcription, maybe just the at home work is required by law to go to speech recognition?  Has anyone else heard this?  I figured it is just up to the individual companies to decide whether they choose for the work to be done straight or by speech recognition.  If this is so, all of us at home workers won't have a choice and if we want to do medical work we will be forced into speech.

speech - true

A lot of the work will be done by electronic medical records, going that way now, so there were be no straight or VR work. In my small town of 2000 people the doctors do their own stuff, so 10 MTs let go completely. So it is not just the at home workers that will be doing VR (if there is a career for any of us by then). If you are doing straight now, be very, very thankful. And of course, if you are lucky enough to still do straight with about 7-8 cpl be aware that VR is going to get you about 2-4 cpl and more work for half the pay. If you are at the age to go back to school and get another career (how about general or legal transcription you can do at home),I would think about a different career. I am over 60 and will be retiring soon. But this profession has been going down the crapper for quite some time. From $25 an hour in 2008 to minimum wage is 2011. (My 91-year-old mother in the nursing home with her SS and dad's pension made more taxable income than me last year). With that good news, have a nice day.

I think you are referring to - the requirement of going to

[ In Reply To ..]
electronic medical record by the year 2014, not speech. and this is only for the physicians who accept Medicare/Medicaid patients that they are REQUIRED to do that. Many are going to emr anyway, and many of the emr platforms do not require the use of a transcriptionist, as many utilize the point and click system for the docs now. I do not think that speech rec is a REQUIREMENT as those are proven to be ineffective, except to the MTSOs who utilize them and only to cut the MTs pay in half...not as productive as they say.

going to speech - trena

okay, yes that is what I thought. It's EMR that is required by 2014, mainly for just individual doctors. Well, maybe there will be a low of low paying scribe jobs, ha, ha. Yes, we are stuck on these at home jobs thanks to greed of MTSOs, you are right.

do not understand your comment we are stuck on these at home jobs. - NM

EMR yes. Must go thru speech, no.

it is all going to be EMR, point and click.

Trena is right.

no, trena is wrong - get your facts straight

[ In Reply To ..]
First, Trena said it was going to speech. That's not point and click.
Second, it's not going to all go point and click, nor is it all going to speech. Those two things will be a portion of it, but there will still be jobs.

I wish you chicken littles would just accept the sky has fallen on YOU and move on.
have heard that for years that MT would not be gone - MTwithquestions
[ In Reply To ..]
and it is gone, for so many gone compared to what it once was.

would you please share your information as to why you think there will be jobs for MTs, and in what capacity or pay scale.

It would help a lot as I just got an offer to work, but also have an offer to retrain into something else. If there is reliable info out there, please share.
I'd choose B - my opinion
[ In Reply To ..]
If I had an offer to retrain for something else, I'd be on it yesterday, no question.
I have to agree with plan B, while MTing won't be "gone" totally - it will be as has been cut drastically. NM

Your compassion for others is lovely.

The "sky has fallen" on the industry in general and a lot of MTs have been hit by the debris.

There are still some MTs who are doing quite well, apparently you are one of them. I wouldn't dance on the graves of your fellow MT's too vigorously though, some day that bell may toll for thee.

I feel no glee that others struggle. I struggle myself. What I don't do, is get on a forum and spread tons of woe is me. Instead, I find work. If I can't find work in MT, I find a solution.

I'm sick to death of hearing the "oh my, MT is dying" - if that's what you think, then make a plan and go for it. It has nothing to do with compassion. I have no patience for whiners. So if you're whining, yes, my tolerance is low. If you're taking your own fate in your hands and doing something, then I give you a standing ovation.

As to the person who asked about hope. There's always hope. But you can't just sit in your livingroom and hope a job will come knock on your door, train you, then employ you.

The responsibilities of MTs are going to change. We'll be responsible for providing documentation, possibly coding that documentation, possibly abstracting that documentation. You have to read the industry information as a whole (not just MT) and get a feel for what's going on outside the tiny world that is MT.
You know what this board helps people who have no one else. NOT WHINERS. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
The people who post aren't whiners. They need a place to go and talk about what they are going through and what they are feeling. Lord knows they can't afford therapy.

If you don't like a post then you have the option to not read it.

I am tired of people being called losers and whiners by people who have been LUCKY so far.

I actually still do okay as an MT and so don't really "whine" on this board. I save that for my hubby, but some people don't have that.

Be happy that your life is grand and you have it all under control. Not everyone can be as good as you.

good luck with that - coding and abstracting
[ In Reply To ..]
because no one and I mean no one is going to give you a chance to do that, you have to already know how to do it and you have to already have experience. No one is going to hire an MT to do that and then train them, bet my bottom dollar.
AND, it's already being outsourced and/or offshored. - Not worth the effort to try to get into.
[ In Reply To ..]
The person who points the finger and calls us all whiners should get back to us sometime in the future, after the rug gets pulled out from under HER, as well. She thinks she's impervious to job loss/deterioration, but we all know better than that.
That is not really correct - Just setting the record straight for others
[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't bother me that YOU don't want to code, but I'd prefer that others not be misled by your views.

I don't understand why you are so rabidly negative about coding. Outsourcing is not a problem -- facilities often outsource overflow coding. Those jobs are very good. There are serious financial and compliance issue working to prevent offshoring.

We have explained this all at length, but you cannot be convinced. And you do appear to be both a whiner and a remarkably negative person.

All point and click is EMR but not all EMR is point and click - There are differences in the EMR systems

[ In Reply To ..]
All EMR means is electronic medical record. There is no regulation that says what form that EMR must take. The point and click (aka EPIC in many instances) is but one of those. It is the biggest and the best and the most expensive, so it is clearing out a lot of MT jobs.

NOT ALL MT jobs, though. I currently work in-house for a hospital/medical group system and they use EPIC and we still have a boat load of dictation and that is not going to change.

Please, please, get the facts straight. the "point and click" type of inputting records refers to the INPUTTING of the information, not the form the information takes. So, no, Trena is not correct.
thank you for speaking from hands-on position and not - out of fear based on panic. NM

EMR/going to speech - trena
[ In Reply To ..]
You know with all the changes and with this EMR junk, I would think these scribe jobs that they talk about would be becoming much more prevalent. They're not supposed to be really high paying jobs. I tried for one awhile back, didn't get it but I would think that would be one of the "new waves" of the future.
scribes - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I usually see a PA instead of the doc. The PA uses the computer to update the info while I'm in the exam room, essentially acting as the medical scribe? I would think that with more patients being seen by PAs and NPs who can do this, it eliminates the need for MTs as well as scribes. Seems our choices for transitioning out of MT just keep getting more limited.

This is a first for me.  The doc is NOT ESL.  But, it took me quite a while to figure out what she was saying when I heard, "The patient lickscrapitus in his knee."  Later on, I realized that she was has difficulty with pronouncing some A's and E's correctly.  So, the "lickscrapitus" was "lacks crepitus", which is also a rather odd way of making the statement, IMHO. Why don't the facilities/MTSOs notify the MTs when there is a doc on the account with certain s ...
