New pathology transcription job, info needed - mamaraeMT

I am about to start a new in-house path transcription job for a laboratory. I did transcription for about 6 years up until I quit last spring. My specialties then were ortho and PT, so I have no experience in pathology. The new company is well aware of this and is willing to train and be patient with me learning on the job. Even so, I am so very nervous as I know this is a whole different ballgame with terminology. They do autopsies as well. Are there sites I should read up on or dictionaries that you would recommend to help me become familiar with this field so I'm not driving everybody nuts when I start? Any info provided is so very much appreciated!!!

Try just typing forensic pathology terminology, autopsy terminology, laboratory pathology terminology in google. There are many, many websites. The first 3 or 4 listed in google would probably be the best to chose, but I am sure you will find lots of information, even how they perform the autopsy. Too many to mention here.

What is different with Pathology (sm) - Rose

Body parts and specimen's come in and are processed by a tech (not the MD) who does the "Gross Report" which is a physical description of the part, as it is sliced and processed. It's usually brief. The tech takes slices of the specimen and sets them in paraffin blocks, then slices those blocks to make slides which are what the doctors took at under the microscope. They then dictate the "Final Report". Sometimes just a "Preliminary Report" if they have do more testing or send it out to another lab.

It is a pretty simple format to follow for these reports.

You may also do Pap smears, so I'd search for Pap and cytology terms. Also if you can find lists of special stains, those can be stumpers. Just get as many sample reports as possible. Pathology is a great one for utilizing expansion software as it is repetitive.

This is true unless it is a teaching hospital/medical school. I have been working pathology exclusively since 1979. At our hospital, the gross is dictated by Resident/Fellows and some Pathology Assistants. The Microscopic/Final Diagnosis is dictated by the same Residents/Fellows and on rare occassions staff pathologists who are also pathology professors in the medical school.

Also as a transcriptionist new to pathology this is the book for you. It is worth buying "Steadman's Pathology & Lab Medicine Words (Includes Histology). This is a great book which includes a good section on stains which you will need to become familar with. PATHOLOGY IS A GREAT FIELD AND VERY INTERESTING. If anyone uses an aircard to connect to the Internet to work daily, I have some questions... Most aircards I have seen have an access limit of up to 5 GB per month. I work online with a constant connection - as I finish one report and send it in, another one is downloaded, so I am probably downloading/uploading 25-40 times a day.
