Pathology transcription - well do you like it? - LoveToPaint
Posted: Feb 06, 2012
Just wondering if anyone out there types pathology reports and, if so, how well do you like it? Considering a position of strictly pathology dictation. Thanks.
My first MT job was path - the reports are more boring

than most MT, as you are describing little bits of tissue. I remember typing "tiny tan fragments" over and over. The fun part was being attached to the lab, and they let us look at some of the more interesting specimens as well as autopsies in progress. At another path job I had they stuck the MTs in a little closet with a lot of chemicals and I think I am still brain damaged from that.

Pathology was my first job too. I was told that I should work in a doctor's office as I was not ready for that type of work. I would love to give it a try now that I have 30 years of experience and still remember some of it. I only worked for a month or so.

It depends on what aspect of pathology. Autopsies themselves are very interesting, but I believe it's a County-type position.
Microspecimens, on the other hand, are extremely boring to me. I could spend all day on autopsies, and maybe 5 minutes on specimens. I'd be bored to tears.
We're all different, though.

My first transcription job was in a small hospital with 12 active staff physicians (different specialties). We had two pathologists who came by twice a week. I found it more difficult than the acute care docs due to the fact that these two would not even say aspirin--it was acetylsalicylic acid. They were a "trip", but I finally got used to them. My office was next door to theirs and I got tired of smelling formaldehyde. It seemed to creep through the walls.
Thanks for the replies...I'm thinking I'll stay with hem/onc. - LoveToPaint

My first and only job was in pathology. Have been doing this work exclusively since 1979 and I love it. I have always worked for a teaching hospital and it is very interesting. The specimens today have changed with all the advancements of medicine. So many more transplants and other procedures. I love this job and would not consider doing anything else and by the way, the pay is very nice. No working in closets, no formalin to deal with, except on the occasions we need to go into the lab when we have questions. The only downside I see it that pathologists aren't interested in MTs working from home.

New Pathology Transcription Job, Info Needed Jun 28, 2013I am about to start a new in-house path transcription job for a laboratory. I did transcription for about 6 years up until I quit last spring. Even so, I am so very nervous as I know this is a whole different ballgame with terminology. They do autopsies as well. Are there sites I should read up on or dictionaries th ...
