Pathology and Radiology transcription - typetypetypeaway

Posted: May 23, 2011

I have been a radiology transcriptionist for about 12 years. I am presently unemployed. I have seen an ad on one of the job sites for a pathology transcriptionist with 1 year experience. My question is how different/difficult is pathology transcription. Should it be something a radiology transcriptionist can do, given I have 15 years experience but 12 in rad work. Do you think it would be something I could pick up without difficulty? Any information and input would be appreciated. I have been out of work 1 year and it is getting more difficult finding something. Thanks.

Do you have a Book of Style or any way to look up sample reports? They have a good sample of a Pathology report. I have done both radiology and pathology and I had no problem going from one to the other but I was trained on site. It all depends if the company you apply for wants to train or wants a seasoned pathology transcriptionist. I would go for it though, always good to broaden your horizon and learn as much as you can if your staying in this field. Clinical work is a good transition also. Acute care is something you can attain also if you study. The Book of Style has good samples and is a good tool for self study. Good luck

If you are well versed in medical terminology and anatomy and physiology you should be okay. BUT . . . pathology and radiology have their own special terminology, obviously. If you like imaging of any kind, you will like radiology better; however, if you like lab work, you will like pathology better. In radiology, you need to know every bone in the body, muscle and then some whereas in pathology you need to know every minute cellular detail and microbiology detail. Either way, it is more of what you are interested in. I actually liked them both WAY better than transcribing the boring medical records reports.

I actually had a temporary job in a pathology lab at a hospital in a neighboring town, and did pretty well. It could have been having that support of a team there and the doctor right there for clarification. Because when I tried my hand at it again after doing Radiology for a while, and it was all greek to me. They are definitely two different animals. And don't even get me started on Radiation Oncology.....Oy Vey......

I have done all 3 (radiology, pathology and radiation oncology) and all 3 are very different. Radiation oncology is my full time job now and I love it. It definitely takes a little bit of time getting adjusted to the terminology, but I think all are very easy once you get used to them. To NCMT, do you not like radiation oncology?????
I was once told, if I can learn Radiology I can learn anything - I believe if I learned it, I could do it.

But it is not my favorite modality. No. I'm sure you can get great lines though. Those reports are very long and detailed - "meaty" as one MT said to me once (LOL).

Thanks all for your info. I will apply to that place online for the path MT and see what happens. I do like rad work very much but getting to need a job and thought maybe they would take a chance on me with not much experience in the path field. Will just see what happens. Thanks again.

switching from radiology to pathology - Nell

Pathology is a whole other specialty and it is a lot harder than radiology. That's not to say you could not learn it, but it will take time.

I personally find it the most fascinating of all transcription but I went from typing pathology to radiology and that was pretty much easy. However, pathology is not a walk in the park. If you are dedicated, resourceful and really interested you can succeed, just don't go into thinking because you know radiology that it will be an easy transition because they are quite different.

I have been doing Pathology exclusively for 31 years, I have no idea how it is to come from another discipline and learn Pathology, you need to know anatomy, cellular structure, all the body systems and a lot of chemical stains. We have recently hired someone from Radiology and she is having an extremely difficult time. YOU CAN LEARN IT, WE ALL DID AT ONE TIME; BUT IT IS NOT EASY.

That is interesting the MT is having such a difficult time. I mean it is all anatomy and physiology. You have to learn the cell structure, etc. in order to pass A&P. Why the extreme difficulty? Did the MT not go through A&P college-level courses? ?? Just wondering? I never had trouble myself . . .

Pathology And Laboratory Transcription

I just found a local hospital advertising for a path and lab transcription job and am considering applying, but I've never done that type of transcription.  I've done numerous others, radiology, hospital, surgical, clinic, etc., but it has been a few years as lately I have been doing clinic work only.  Is pathology/laboratory transcription difficult?  I realize it's a matter of opinion and just like all other transcription would take time to adjust.  I'm g ...

New Pathology Transcription Job, Info Needed
Jun 28, 2013

I am about to start a new in-house path transcription job for a laboratory. I did transcription for about 6 years up until I quit last spring. My specialties then were ortho and PT, so I have no experience in pathology. The new company is well aware of this and is willing to train and be patient with me learning on the job. Even so, I am so very nervous as I know this is a whole different ballgame with terminology. They do autopsies as well. Are there sites I should read up on or dictionaries th ...

Pathology Transcription - Difference Besides Learning The Format?

I have 18 years experience in acute care transcription in just about everything except "pathology transcription."  I have done a lot of ops of all kinds, oncology, neurology, cardiology, infectious disease, etc.  Is Pathology transcription that different?  I've done tumor staging, chemo protocols, just about any type of EEG, TEE, cath, radiology, etc.  The reason I'm asking is I saw a job for a "Pathology transcriptionist" and I really believe I'm qualified with my knowledge, ...

Where Are All The Radiology Transcription Jobs?
Aug 26, 2013

It is just me or does it seems as if the transcription third party companies are focused more on acute care transcription than any other specialty. I have been a radiology transcriptionist for over 20 years. The company I worked for decided to eliminate 13 of us F/T transcriptionists since they converted to VR system and they kept a few aboard. Apparently the radiologists are being trained to edit their own reports. That being said, I'm searching high and low for a F/T position for a radiol ...
