CLK Transcription any info? - Bambi

Posted: Nov 12, 2010

Any info on this company?  I have heard from them and she is rather up front about her workload, etc., but I would like to know if anyone has worked for this company.  The last time I posted about a company, someone said "look elsewhere" and I didn't listen and I should have.  I am now looking elsewhere.  If you want to e-mail me that is fine as well.  Thanks in advance.

their ad says, "Pay begins at $21.00 per audio hour which averages 0.35 cents per audio minute for the newbie until off QA. (length of audio times rate = pay)"

Taking the 3x rule, you'd make $7.00 an hour.

Why bother?

I understand your post which is why I state I do like the newbies. The rate may be lower for a seasoned trans, however when the newbie can't get their foot in the door, off shore and freelancers pay 10.00 per audio hour, and other companies demand set times for work, the 21.00 per audio hour comes in handy.

The flexibility, the training - with work, with programs, and being able to say as an independent contractor that you have your first client - is sometimes more important than having to work between this time and that time this day and that day.

Ask any of my IC's already with me - when they do not want to work, or do not like an assignment, or have multiple blanks throughout a tough audio report, how good it feels to know that the next assignment is just a request away.

The rate is what it is. The chance to learn and grow and get the experience others require - is priceless.
This is straight typing of nonmedical stuff, so the rule is actually 2X however I know in an IC's life, crap happens so it may take longer when the kids are crying, other work comes in, dinner has to be made, etc.

Thanks for considering (or not considering)and have a great holiday!

Actually, your ad is against the terms of service of this board. - Me

According to "MTSOs read this first" post that is found above the ad on the Job Seeker's Board, it says: "Please do not post job ads offering less than .05 cpl for actual transcription work performed." $21.00 an hour is about 0.0175 cents a line. I don't know why admin has let it go this long, unless they don't know how to do the math.

You're taking advantage of newbies, plain and simple. There are other places that pay newbies better.
A question - Michelle
[ In Reply To ..]

This is a serious question, so I really hope you will answer it and not just ignore this request.

I am one of those mathematically challenged people.  I have seen ads before where the pay is per audio minute or hour, and I could never figure out how that compared to cents per line, so I usually give up and do not apply.

Now I see you have actually done the math, and I was wondering if you could explain how you did it.  Please be gentle – as I said, I am mathematically challenged.

You wrote “$21.00 an hour is about 0.0175 cents a line.”

I could never find any information on how to figure this out.  How do you take into account super fast talkers, super slow talkers, and people who do not talk at all?  Do you take an average?  Are you basing this on experience from what you normally type every day?

I really would like to know how to figure this out so that next time I see an ad where they pay by minute or hour, I can make an intelligent comparison.

Thank you so much for not ignoring my question.

Michelle

Actually you are assuming an hour of audio is quick talking nonstop talking all the way through. The great thing about interviews are the pauses, the regular speaking and sometimes even dead air at the beginning or end. Unless you have typed one, how would you know what the page rate or line count would be?

My ICs prefer the per audio over page rate in most cases. Also, again the leniency and flexibility of assignments.

Low pay - Sue

[ In Reply To ..]
I work for a company doing nonmedical transcription and by the time I do a 2-hour tape, I make an average of $225 (sometimes as much as $275 depending on how much talking they do). With this company it would be about $48 for 2 hours of talking. I guess it's more than not having a job at all, but there's no way I would do it for $21 per audio hour. Just sayin'

low pay? - confused

[ In Reply To ..]
If for a two hour tape you make 225, how is that 48 for two hours?

I have worked for CLK for 4 years and if you don't like the rate, then don't apply. We all start somewhere and the flexibility is worth more to me. I can take one file or twenty files, 10 minutes or five hours. It is up to me.
What she means is... - helping clarify
[ In Reply To ..]
With HER company she makes $225 for a 2-hour tape BUT with CLK's rate, a 2-hour tape would only be in the ballpark of $48.

Yes, I have been working for CLK for 3 years.

I don't know anything about the company, but - anon

I found this rather humorous in her ad...

"Must understand tha proofing your work is just as important as transcribing it."

She needs to proof her own work! Tee hee! (She must have been in a rush typing up this ad!) I'm not trying to be mean here, as we all make mistakes, just thought it was funny that she made a typo in the sentence mentioning the importance of proofreading your work. LOL!

other misspellings in ad - sski

[ In Reply To ..]
..."independant" and "florish." I know it seems nitpicky, but if I were placing an ad, I would type it into Word and run it through the spell checker before copying and pasting the text to the message board. Just sayin'.

Thanks for pointing out the errors. It shows your skills. Perhaps you should try an interview audio and get some feedback on your work as well?!

We all have moments, but as long as those moments do not go to a client, no stress (for me at least).

As for the 2-to-1 ratio - 99 percent of our work is one-on-one interviews. But we do get the multiple-speaker as well on occasion in which a higher rate can be offered. Also, my QA time is usually very short and rates increase. But unless you work for me, you would not know that.

I have over 200 regular clients who send work on a daily / weekly basis. There is regular work for those who are interested and those who are available during the moments in time that work is received from my clients. Again, as an IC you pick your hours and your assignments. So if you are only on in the morning and work comes in the evening, you may just miss out some days.

Lastly, with my IC̢۪s I do not pick apart e-mails or IMs, or even resumes. The work provided is a whole other area. I try to treat my team as a team. So far that attitude has worked for me, and hopefully your attitude works for you. Have a great day and have fun transcribing. Learning to breathe is the one thing we as US Transcriptionists sometimes forget to do.

Her honesty is refreshing and she seems down-to-earth.

I noticed that she only hires newbies, which is awesome, though I would love it if she were to also take a look at those of us that have been around for awhile and are looking for something different.

I would love to hire those of you who have been around for some time, however, being one of those myself I understand that my rate is lower than many. Not all, but many. I also need others to understand my rates are low because I am fighting to train and get the work back here. I despise offshore and in order to compete I have to offer lower rates, and show them the quality we US transcriptionists can give them.

I believe if I am honest with my ICs, they will be honest with me, and together we can grow.

I am an Army Brat, proud to be American, and have no issue with training and assisting others who one day will be my US competition.

And as others have learned, even the seasoned IC has trouble with regular interviews, but once mastered, some find medical to be a second choice.

If interested in learning more - send me an email. I cannot respond to all. I do hold them for a while but if you like, send me a reminder every so often. I do not have a huge turnaround, but am growing and usually need 3 to 5 every month or so. It is harder for me because you do truly make your own hours and well, it leaves huge holes sometimes in the assignment of work.

I have transcriptionists that take one file a month, one file a week, and twenty files every three days. So, if you are truly interested, let me know.

Lastly, those of you who have applied, gotten my standard informational email and said yes to begin but have not contacted me again, I will be moving on to the next person today. And for those of you who accepted an assignment and then fell into a pothole somewhere with no communication - I wish you well with your endeavors.

Tee hee! - You betcha!

The irony brightens my morning. On a more serious note, CLK sounds like EXPLOITATION, pure and simple.

clk transcription - CLKTrans

[ In Reply To ..]
Exploiting what? The fact that most if not all transcription companies say they "hire" ICs - can't hire an IC, you can bring them on board and use their services, but not a one I have ever known expects anything less than a scheduled time for transcribing and a line count to be completed. Exploiting the fact that some of the US Companies off shore work and then ask us to proof it for an even lower rate because the off shore people do not understand English?

Exploit the fact that others offer no training, they offer criticism, rate decreases for errors, and then no communication when assignment loads are decreased?

Exploit the fact that many companies - if not all - treat ICs as employees instead of the businesses that they are.

Exploit the fact that newbies are just start up companies in my eyes.

I appreciate your comment, but you sound an awful lot like a woman I use to know that ran a local company here that went 6 months or more not paying their workers and dodged all of them until they took her to court.

I have always paid my ICs. Have I been late - absolutely. I won't start lying now. Have I dodged them - NEVER. And I have not lost one of my fantastic team to anything but a better opportunity once they had the training, and even those seasoned for 6 years or more in this business continue to work with me when they want and have free time. I even help them set up their "company" with free programs and contacts and continue to help them after they decide they can't accept assignments from me.

I am honest with the ICs I utilize and have never expected anything but their personal best. Being their first client or one of many makes me proud to deal with them.

I have ICs who are dealing with chronic and terminal illnesses, family struggles, divorce, financial hardships, and other personal concerns who know that when they want work it is here for them. When they can't, no problem.

So tell me and everyone here - what is it that you feel I exploit?

Please, be as specific and as honest as I have been. I call that professional courtesy.

Have a great day. May your workload be heavy and you remember to breathe.

CLK Transcription - CLK Trans
[ In Reply To ..]
I do not pay a wage. I pay a rate as a client. Others wonder what happened to the true meaning of an IC and you are a very good example of what happened.

I do not have employees, I am a client to independent contractors. Anyone who does like what I am willing to pay can move on.

I advertise what I am willing to pay an IC until they prove their ability to me - new or seasoned.

If this is how you speak/treat your clients, I would be glad I am not one of them. OOPS sorry, you get paid a wage. So you don't have clients. You are an employee.

Have a great day. Enjoy what you do and with whom you do it, or move on. Feel free to move on from this conversation any time you like.

Ridiculously low pay - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
$.35 per audio minute is an insult and there is no way it's 2:1. It is at least 3:1 and closer to 4:1, especially if it's multispeaker, as most are. And you need to factor in audio quality. No one should work doing focus groups or any type of per minute transcription for less than $.85/min. Anything less than that is truly taking advantage of you.

Don't knock it til you try it - Former CLK

[ In Reply To ..]
I have works for CLK Transcription. She was kind enough to give me a job right out of school when I couldn't find one anywhere else due to "experience requirements." As for preferring newbies, I am the same way now that I am in a management job. I don't like having to break bad habits. I learned a LOT from CLK and was sorry when my home circumstances required me to leave; and if at any point she asked me to come back, I would without hesitation. She pays on time, ALWAYS. She also is very fair. If your QA scores rock, she pays fair for what she gets. It only took me about 2 weeks to go up 2 cpl, and I went up regularly after that as well. As for not paying much, newbies need a lot of training and supervision; so having someone with her dedication and patience is refreshing. She does not make you feel like crap if you screw up. She understands that real life gets in the way of work and never punishes you for it. If you have a strength, she plays that too. When you intern, you get paid, but you don't get paid full salary; she is essentially taking on interns. She taught me things that I STILL teach my own interns and MTs. She is one of the rare breed of Medical Language Specialists that teach the art of our craft not just plain ole typing. I wouldn't bash her; and honestly she says right away that she takes newbs (expect lower pay without experience/our (my company) interns make 1/2 what the regular rate is; the other 1/2 goes to the supervisor that has to monitor 100%) and that her work is mostly NOT MEDICAL. I checked into several non-medical companies and their pay isn't much better. If you are a newbie out of school, it's a great way to get your foot in the door and get some experience.

Discrimination? - me

[ In Reply To ..]
Only hiring newbies? Isn't that discrimination?
clk transcription - CLKTrans
[ In Reply To ..]
Who said I was only bringing on newbies. First I do not hire, I utilize ICs. I did say I prefer because they don't get the chance they need. I have brought on many seasoned ICs. Again, the problem with people wanting to be an IC - you keep wanting to get hired. You should be looking for clients. Then you do their work but they dont tell you when, how, and what to work. Either you are an IC with clients or you are an employee.

Now my question - why does everyone have a problem with others trying to gain experience in this field? (without paying money to get it I might add?)
