Is it reasonable to expect a raise after 4 years? - OlderMT

Posted: Sep 13, 2011

I have worked for the same service for over 4 years.  I am an IC MT.  I feel I deserve an increase.  I asked for one at the end of my first year and was told the economy was bad....blah, blah.  Ok, I understood that but now I feel I have earned an increase.  Yes, I realize that many feel an IC should just inform the service of their increase.  I know that would not fly with this service.  They could care less if you work for them or not.  Theyhave a "we will just find someone else type attitude."  I feel a small increase at this time is reasonable.  But my fear is what if they say no again, then what.  The competition for jobs is stiff.  Would like opinions.  TY

a raise? - Louise

I believe you deserve a raise! As a service owner, that question arises all the time. I have been forced by most of my clients to lower my rates over the years and if I mention raising rates, the client will go elsewhere and make a remark similar to this: We have been called by companies with lower rates or we know of an Indian service with very low rates. So while I truly feel for you, the above is probably the reason.

worked for same company for 13 years - last raise was in 2000

That is 11 years! No raise in 11 years. No cost of living, no your doing a good job, no nothing.

I never hear anything from my service either, unless it is negative.

Not only have we not had raises, we had our pay cut and our insurance taken away last year with no warning. Not good when you are the head of household.

A raise? (LOL) - SURE, as long as you aren't - a medical transcriptionist!

MTs don't get pay raises anymore. Just cuts in cents per line, invisible keystroke-siphoning software, and dings for imaginary mistakes.

and the only time that I've seen a raise was when I changed companies and negotiated for higher line pay when the job offer was extended. Other than that, I've NEVER seen a raise.

raises went out with hourly pay and working in the office. - just saying NM

.

Oh yeah, reasonable, but not likely. I just got a 2 cpl cut in pay. - First pay change in years and it went south.

What Would Be A Reasonable Hourly Wage For A Medical Transcriptionist Of 12.5 Years?
Nov 30, 2012

Hi: I have worked for the same hospital for 12.5 years, so there is a lot of loyalty there. I live in a southern state in the USA. I get paid an hourly pay plus $0.47 incentive for anything over 90 minutes. My hourly pay to me is low, but not below $10.00 an hour. Is 20.00 per hour appropriate or am I wrong? Thanks in advance for the advice. PS: I am not here for a debate just want to know what is a good hourly pay for 12.5 years. Thanks, Mel ...

How Long Should An MT With 10+ Years Experience Expect To Be On

Sometimes I wonder with companies who pay an MT less while they are on full QA, if they don't simply keep that MT on QA for as long as possible to avoid paying the higher rate.  Has anyone ever pressed the QA issue? ...

Have Not Had A Raise In 5 Years.
Jul 25, 2011

I am tier III and I still am not at top pay. Today I asked my CCM for a raise and she said she will put in the paperwork. Why do I feel I still will be denied even though I have met all the requirements. More than likely I will be denied because they do not want any MT to make above minimum wage. Also I really feel bad for the MTs who had their pay cut. That is just not right. I notice when I ask why the pay cut the answer is always to level the playing field and to make it fair to the other MT ...

No Raise In 11 Years
Oct 06, 2011

I am an independent contractor with 30 plus years experience, and have worked for the same hospital for 11 years, still at the same rate as when I started.  At the time it was a good rate, now not so much--outside typing service does the overflow easy stuff , we IC's are left with the ESL's, static and more difficult reports.  Know things have changed dramatically in just 11 years.  Also know the onsite transcriptionists (employees)  get a 4% raise most years.  ...

Anybody Seen A Raise In Pay Over The Past 3 Years?
Jan 03, 2012

Has anyone gotten any raises in pay over the past 3 years?  I know in these mean, tough times gratitude for having a job is important, but my thankfulness doesn't stop me from knowing that I have not had any increase in my pay since I started more than 2 years ago with the company I work for.  I am curious if any transcriptionist who has been steadily working for the same place for the past 2-3-4 years has seen a pay raise.  I am  frustrated with rising prices ...

What Is Reasonable? SM
Apr 23, 2012

I have a new job doing VRE.  This is new to me and I am glad to have the chance to learn it since there are few straight typing jobs out there.  However, I am shocked at how the reports look when they come to me.  To say that I am doing heavy-duty editing would be an understatement!  How much time is reasonable to spend on these reports? I am finding that it is taking me a great deal of time to correct them.  It might be easier to just transcribe them myself in most case ...

Is 8 Cpl Reasonable For IC Radiology Work?
Apr 22, 2010

It's been nearly 10 years since I've worked as an IC, so I'm not sure what's considered reasonable pay nowadays.  Does 8 cpl sound reasonable for radiology transcription as an IC?  I'm accustomed to being paid by the report as an employee, so it's a bit difficult to compare the two, but it seems a little low to me. ...

Any Companies Have Reasonable Insurance

Reasonable Split Shift
Feb 15, 2013

If you were told by an employer on a given day you could work a split shift, what would you consider a reasonable amount of time in that split frame? 1 hour, 4 hours?  I just took a new job and am being screwed.  Would just like your opinions and have some validation for my own satisfaction as to who is being unreasonable.  Thanks. ...

After Years And Years Of Being IC, Obtained Employee Status At A Co. Sm
Nov 26, 2012

Thought that after not having enough work for a couple years now and always chasing work, I'd now have a "real job" as an employee and wouldn't have to worry about a steady paycheck and paying the bills anymore. The reason I thought this was because at the interview and in their professional company emails, they use all the "real job" words:  Shift, scheduled hours, overtime, PTO, benefits, etc.  I felt relieved to finally have a "job." What a big bunch of BS! I was "hired" ...

3 Years. Question: How Many More Years Do You Plan To Be An MT/editor?
Dec 20, 2013

There is much speculation about the field of transcription - how many of us actually plan to be here 5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now. I realize that the field is going to change, which will contribute to your answer. Will there be enough transcriptionists/editors to fill the need in 5 years and in 10 years? Will the industry be forced out of offshoring because of taxes? Will there be a need even for editors if VR gets better? These are all unanswered questions, but my question is, what ...

Is It Reasonable To Request One Work Type-sm
Jul 17, 2012

I have been working for an MTSO and my main account is everything from cardiac catheterizations to discharge summaries to OP notes to consults to psychiatric notes.  It is a wide range of specialties.  I am not making any money.  I'm all over the board every day and I am frustrated.  Do you think it is a reasonable request to ask for just one or two work types?  TIA ...

Does Anyone Have Health Insurance Plan That Is A Bit More Reasonable?
Dec 02, 2012

I'm a poor, struggling medical transcriptionist, as most of us are. I'm six years away from receiving Medicare benefits and have been struggling to pay medical insurance the last few years. I just found out my premiums are going up from $256 to $308 monthly starting Jan. 2013. This insurance is not great, does not even pay for x-rays.  Does anyone have an insurance plan that is a bit more reasonable? I am not young, but do  not have any pre-existing conditions and really don't u ...

I Think We Can Expect To See A Lot More

very long reports coming in about 10 minutes before we are about to finish for the day, which will force us to either do, causing us to stay over, or opt out of, which will leave time which we then will have to make up at their approval.  There's always torture involved with just doing our job.  It's like industrial terrorism.   ...

MTSO's - Is This The Best I Can Expect?
Apr 05, 2011

After 20 years of hospital-based HIM transcription, they gave us away to Medquist.  I feel set up for failure by not getting consistent hospital accounts and never having a chance to learn a specific account.  Communication with management is - absent - unless they want something from you.  I also find the pay and line count methodology to be deplorable, to say the least.  I have VR experience, but find that Medquist just turns on literally EVERYTHING to VR, and most of it re ...

These Companies Just Expect TOO MUCH!
Aug 22, 2013

These MTSOs just expect way too much out of someone just APPLYING for a job these days that it has caused me to not even apply anymore.  I need work, but I suppose I don't need it enough to be willing to jump through all of the hoops that they require.  The MT testing site has been aggravating enough, to take so much time on a test, not even knowing if you will get a call back, even if you DO pass.  Lately, like the past 3 jobs I have looked into, their testing process was IN ...

In-house Job Prospect, What To Expect?
Sep 01, 2011

I just set up an interview for an in-house job.  Problem is, I've only worked from home, so I'm really not sure what to expect.  It is for a rural hospital district.  My experience is with medium to large multispecialty clinic accounts.  The HM manager said it was transcription, including radiology, as well as acting as assistant to her, which makes me think it might be more clerk work than transcription. I'm wondering if there are any questions I should ask m ...

I Worked For M*Modal A Couple Of Years Ago Or So And I Worked For Medquist Several Years Ago.
