reasonable split shift - sm

Posted: Feb 15, 2013

If you were told by an employer on a given day you could work a split shift, what would you consider a reasonable amount of time in that split frame? 1 hour, 4 hours?  I just took a new job and am being screwed.  Would just like your opinions and have some validation for my own satisfaction as to who is being unreasonable.  Thanks.

Any number of hours as long as you complete - your total hours within a 24-hour timeframe

Split shift generally refers to a shift being split in TWO. - sm

I have personally never encountered a split shift that was an hour here, an hour there. Usually split shift is your shift split in two. So, maybe 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. I've actually seen it done with those exact hours.

yes, thanks - sm

Yes, I was going to have a 3-1/2 hour gap between the halves of my shift. Then the supvr told me I was totally unreasonable and she could give me no more than 1 or 2 hrs at the most inbetween -- which is not enough for me. well thanks to you both.
That makes no sense as one hour between - two four hour shifts is lunch. nm

when you are sick or want a vacation? This is for a hospital. Thought I found a dream job, but instead found toxic management.
Yes, I have at a number of companies. - sm

One had an elaborate calendar process where you would put hours or days up fior grabs and pray others would grab.

Another company made you e-mail around and barter this day/week for that, and it most times was not in advance; it was more of coverage while you helped out on another account that was behind. That was a screwball battering of emails when you were trying to concentrate.

Lastly, had to email/call for help on one job where literally all were off on weekends - including the manager - to get no replies...ever, while they boasted teamwork, teamwork, rah, rah, rah.

You are lucky to work for a hospital direct. Don't give that up...its a jungle out here far beyond anything you'll experience where you are.

Yes, you're correct.... - anon

Your supervisor has no clue what a "split shift" is, or she promised that you would have one just to get you to hire on and never planned on giving it to you. Either way, they are wrong. As was said, a 1-2 hour break is a lunch break on a regular shift.

What Is Reasonable? SM
Apr 23, 2012

I have a new job doing VRE.  This is new to me and I am glad to have the chance to learn it since there are few straight typing jobs out there.  However, I am shocked at how the reports look when they come to me.  To say that I am doing heavy-duty editing would be an understatement!  How much time is reasonable to spend on these reports? I am finding that it is taking me a great deal of time to correct them.  It might be easier to just transcribe them myself in most case ...

Is 8 Cpl Reasonable For IC Radiology Work?
Apr 22, 2010

It's been nearly 10 years since I've worked as an IC, so I'm not sure what's considered reasonable pay nowadays.  Does 8 cpl sound reasonable for radiology transcription as an IC?  I'm accustomed to being paid by the report as an employee, so it's a bit difficult to compare the two, but it seems a little low to me. ...

Is It Reasonable To Expect A Raise After 4 Years?
Sep 13, 2011

I have worked for the same service for over 4 years.  I am an IC MT.  I feel I deserve an increase.  I asked for one at the end of my first year and was told the economy was bad....blah, blah.  Ok, I understood that but now I feel I have earned an increase.  Yes, I realize that many feel an IC should just inform the service of their increase.  I know that would not fly with this service.  They could care less if you work for them or not.  Theyhave a "we wi ...

Does Anyone Have Health Insurance Plan That Is A Bit More Reasonable?
Dec 02, 2012

I'm a poor, struggling medical transcriptionist, as most of us are. I'm six years away from receiving Medicare benefits and have been struggling to pay medical insurance the last few years. I just found out my premiums are going up from $256 to $308 monthly starting Jan. 2013. This insurance is not great, does not even pay for x-rays.  Does anyone have an insurance plan that is a bit more reasonable? I am not young, but do  not have any pre-existing conditions and really don't u ...

What Would Be A Reasonable Hourly Wage For A Medical Transcriptionist Of 12.5 Years?
Nov 30, 2012

Hi: I have worked for the same hospital for 12.5 years, so there is a lot of loyalty there. I live in a southern state in the USA. I get paid an hourly pay plus $0.47 incentive for anything over 90 minutes. My hourly pay to me is low, but not below $10.00 an hour. Is 20.00 per hour appropriate or am I wrong? Thanks in advance for the advice. PS: I am not here for a debate just want to know what is a good hourly pay for 12.5 years. Thanks, Mel ...

Split Jobs (from Below)

I had to listen to the new Split job instructions again because it had been so long since the tutorial and I had forgotten.  I didn't say it was "hard," but it had changed, and I had to refresh.  I don't throw jobs back, so had to go to MQ Central and find the tutorial again and listen about the "import" function and how to do it since you don't highlight and hide the text anymore.  It did take probably 15 minutes to find it and listen through the whole thing becaus ...
