These companies just expect TOO MUCH! - sm

Posted: Aug 22, 2013

These MTSOs just expect way too much out of someone just APPLYING for a job these days that it has caused me to not even apply anymore.  I need work, but I suppose I don't need it enough to be willing to jump through all of the hoops that they require.  The MT testing site has been aggravating enough, to take so much time on a test, not even knowing if you will get a call back, even if you DO pass.  Lately, like the past 3 jobs I have looked into, their testing process was INSANE!  It was download the application, download 7 voice files, transcribe in "xx" format, save as "xx", upload here, email here, on and on and on.

Perhaps the company is seeing if you can follow instructions and I wouldn't mind proving my abilities to do so, IF they would first check my references, call me, tell me they are interested and THEN ask me to test and spend hours doing all of this unpaid nonsense.  They see it as they aren't gonig to waste THEIR time checking references and such before testing, but I see it as I'm not going to waste MY time testing before I even know if I am considered for the position, so I guess we are at a stand still, lol, which of course it's me who doesn't get the job, no skin off of their back.  Just seems like they would have sense enough to look at a resume and say "Okay, she has 20 years of experience, let me call a couple of companies she worked for" Call them up and THEN call me and ask for further information.

These days, in my area of the country, you have to go and pick your own background check up and my husband recently applied for a few jobs.  When one wanted to hire him they called and had him go pick it up and the job offer was contingent on a clean background.  It would be crazy if they asked him to go pay money and waste time to pick it up just to fill out an application.  MTSOs seem to have no business sense in my opinion.

I am a former MTSO and MT who retired nearly two years ago, and I completely agree with you. Back in the day, MTs were treated fairly and with dignity. I am absolutely shocked at the way with which some MTSOs treat MTs like chattel. I believe in testing yes, and a limited background check insofar as it relates to your work. Much of what I see being asked for borders on the illegal. I really sympathize with MTs today. Not sure what, if anything, I can do about it, but I just wanted you to know that not all MTSOs were bad (although those of us who tried to be good were gobbled up by the megacompanies. Squid, are you listening?) Some of us actually cared/care about the MT. Truly, if I had to depend on MT today for my livelihood, I would be looking elsewhere. I can't solve the problem, but I can say that it stinks.

always wanted to know - why

do MTSOs sell to the squid? There were many companies doing well that just were gobbled up. Do you have a choice to sell or is there something that forces you to accept.

People sell to the squid because - Old Pro

the squid comes in and underbids and takes your clients away from you. They offer low-ball bids just to get the account. A friend of mine up in northern California was put out of business that very way.
And just to clarify - Old Pro

Many times small MTSOs do not sell TO the squid (or other predators) but rather just close their doors and get out of MT altogether. Suppose the small MTSO (who paid her MTs 11 cpl if they were really good) charges the hospital X cpl. Well, along comes the squid and tells the hospital they will do their transcription for 30% less than the small MTSO is charging or something like that. The decent MTSO cannot afford to match that price and still pay her crackerjack employees 11 cpl. So the MTSO closes shop, goes to work for someone else, or retires, or changes careers. The MTs now work for the squid or some other corporate entity at 6-7 cpl. That is the way this game gets played.

Easy solution - whatwasthat

Don't apply for job with companies who do this.

Easier said than done. They do not tell you everything. - anon

If they do call, and say 6 to 7 cents and then it is spaces or no spaces! They know the tricks. They have many that you find out later...like you have to work holidays..even if there is no work, but you have to keep checking! You have to produce and learn on your own time because it is all only production pay! No time to look up anything, as that is nonproductive time but do 98% accuracy on an account that you have no idea where they even are located! Walk on water and they will pay you 3 cents.

and another thing is that they never - mt

post how much they will pay. They wait until after all the hoops have been jumped through then tell you 0.06 cpl! Say WHAT?! Why can't we just get the pay issue take care of first thing? Then let's talk.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that most of - them pay 6-7 cpl now.

Which is the biggest reason I know NOT to apply to an MTSO. MTs should stand their ground, and say either we work on-site by the hour, or we work in another field.

MTSOs no longer offer a "career" in MT, or even just a "job". All they offer is indentured servitude. 5crew them all.

I think these shyster companies get a lot of - free transcription done that way! nm

MTSO's - Is This The Best I Can Expect?
Apr 05, 2011

After 20 years of hospital-based HIM transcription, they gave us away to Medquist.  I feel set up for failure by not getting consistent hospital accounts and never having a chance to learn a specific account.  Communication with management is - absent - unless they want something from you.  I also find the pay and line count methodology to be deplorable, to say the least.  I have VR experience, but find that Medquist just turns on literally EVERYTHING to VR, and most of it re ...

In-house Job Prospect, What To Expect?
Sep 01, 2011

I just set up an interview for an in-house job.  Problem is, I've only worked from home, so I'm really not sure what to expect.  It is for a rural hospital district.  My experience is with medium to large multispecialty clinic accounts.  The HM manager said it was transcription, including radiology, as well as acting as assistant to her, which makes me think it might be more clerk work than transcription. I'm wondering if there are any questions I should ask m ...

Is It Reasonable To Expect A Raise After 4 Years?
Sep 13, 2011

I have worked for the same service for over 4 years.  I am an IC MT.  I feel I deserve an increase.  I asked for one at the end of my first year and was told the economy was bad....blah, blah.  Ok, I understood that but now I feel I have earned an increase.  Yes, I realize that many feel an IC should just inform the service of their increase.  I know that would not fly with this service.  They could care less if you work for them or not.  Theyhave a "we wi ...
