In-house job prospect, what to expect? - sm

Posted: Sep 01, 2011

I just set up an interview for an in-house job.  Problem is, I've only worked from home, so I'm really not sure what to expect.  It is for a rural hospital district.  My experience is with medium to large multispecialty clinic accounts.  The HM manager said it was transcription, including radiology, as well as acting as assistant to her, which makes me think it might be more clerk work than transcription.

I'm wondering if there are any questions I should ask more specific to in-house jobs or certain red flags I should look for.  I'm not sure the pay will even be worthwhile for me at this point...but I do want to at least interview and see what it is like.  The other negative I might see right now is commuting (30 miles).

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

It depends on a lot of factors - sm

If it is solely transcription, then it sounds like it might be right up your alley. However, if the HIM manager expects you to assist with coding or tracking down reports, administrative duties including release of information, scanning, validating, etc. then you likely will not have much typing/production time. I work from home for our local hospital and we might be one of the few that provides a base hourly pay PLUS a production incentive. That is helpful. However, I would not want to be an HIM clerk shuffling papers around, copying, faxing, etc. :( Best of luck to you!!!!

I would be very open to learning as many HIM jobs as I could. In my HIM dept, a lot of the advancement comes from within. There hasn't been a transcription opening in years and years but there are openings for medical record clerks and chart analysts. Punch in, punch out, go home. Terrific benefits. Have to weigh costs of commuting/salary.

Thanks to those who posted! sm - OP

I appreciate the responses. As an update, I did have a positive interview this week. The HM manager said the entire department was just her and the transcriptionist and that it was about 60/40 transcription and other records work. The pay range she gave was reasonable (hourly), and they seemed fairly laid back for an office. Hoping for some good news. :)

very long reports coming in about 10 minutes before we are about to finish for the day, which will force us to either do, causing us to stay over, or opt out of, which will leave time which we then will have to make up at their approval.  There's always torture involved with just doing our job.  It's like industrial terrorism.   ...

MTSO's - Is This The Best I Can Expect?
Apr 05, 2011

After 20 years of hospital-based HIM transcription, they gave us away to Medquist.  I feel set up for failure by not getting consistent hospital accounts and never having a chance to learn a specific account.  Communication with management is - absent - unless they want something from you.  I also find the pay and line count methodology to be deplorable, to say the least.  I have VR experience, but find that Medquist just turns on literally EVERYTHING to VR, and most of it re ...

These Companies Just Expect TOO MUCH!
Aug 22, 2013

These MTSOs just expect way too much out of someone just APPLYING for a job these days that it has caused me to not even apply anymore.  I need work, but I suppose I don't need it enough to be willing to jump through all of the hoops that they require.  The MT testing site has been aggravating enough, to take so much time on a test, not even knowing if you will get a call back, even if you DO pass.  Lately, like the past 3 jobs I have looked into, their testing process was IN ...

Is It Reasonable To Expect A Raise After 4 Years?
Sep 13, 2011

I have worked for the same service for over 4 years.  I am an IC MT.  I feel I deserve an increase.  I asked for one at the end of my first year and was told the economy was bad....blah, blah.  Ok, I understood that but now I feel I have earned an increase.  Yes, I realize that many feel an IC should just inform the service of their increase.  I know that would not fly with this service.  They could care less if you work for them or not.  Theyhave a "we wi ...

In-house Job
Oct 14, 2010

I applied for an in-house transcription job in August back at my old pre-MQ hospital.  They decided the work load was too light (they had lost Radiology) and we not going to fill it at that time.  Another position has been vacated and I got a call from a friend that they are definitely filling it this time.  There were only 2 qualified applicants in August.  I am hoping the other person found something great already.  I have my fingers crossed, am nervous, and need ...

In-house Pay?

Does VR Get Better If Kept In-house?
May 16, 2012

Have any of your hospitals purchased a Nuance VR product that they've used for their in-house transcriptionists?  If so, does the VR quality get better and better since you have a limited number of MTs doing the editing?   It's not my hospital but one I know of that's starting with this new product, so I'm not sure of the exact product name.  I've worked for a huge MTSO where the VR never, ever improved in the 9 months I used it; but with soooo many MTs m ...

In-house Job Not So Secure

My job could be in jeopardy because we might be merging with another clinic, and there are no other local in-house MT openings. I've been working in a specialty clinic (in-house) the past 5-1/2 years. Even though I have 5 years of acute care/radiology experience and 1 year of multi-specialty clinic, and even though I took the M-TEC course and graduated with 98% about 3 years ago, it doesn't matter because I don't have recent acute care experience. Okay, I can unders ...

In-house Clinic Pay
Nov 16, 2010

I have an interview with a local eye clinic (there are six surgeons).  Just wondering what kind of salary to expect to be offered or ask for (!), having been paid as a remote MT/VR Editor by production for many years and haven't a clue about salaries in clinics any more.  It is not as an IC but as member of their staff, permanent, full-time, 40 hours a week. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.   ...
