How does a recruiter grade the Carer Step transcrption part of the test - Suzie

Dear Fellow Transcriptionists:

I have taken the skills test given by Career Step I found out, for a company this past weekend and did great on the medical terminology part of the test, but did not pass the actual transcrption part of the test. I am wondering if I did not pass it because I left blank spaces for the foreign dictators. Can you give some advice as to how they grade these tests. Thank you.

I am a medical transcriptionist of 10 years and I am so upset about this. I want a job and I am beginning to give up hope. I lost my last job because I did not put 2 hard spaces between the end of a sentence and the next sentence. I want a job. Thanks for listening.

First, I don't know how any specific employment test is graded. It sounds as if you may be having a tough time passing and being hired for a couple of reasons. You mentioned leaving blank spaces for the foreign dictators. MTs must be able to do a good job on ESL dictation. I can't tell from what you wrote whether you left lots of blanks or just a few. If you left more than a reasonable amount, that would be one reason why you might not pass.

You mentioned that you lost your last job because you hadn't put 2 hard spaces between the end of a sentence and the next sentence. I'm guessing that you mean that you did that throughout all the dictation you transcribed. It sounds like you had been instructed to do it that way and didn't. There's an easy solution to that problem. Do it the way they want it done.

My overall conclusion from what you wrote is that you may not have a good background in how to transcribe, including rules about what is "acceptable" by most employers. You may need more training in ESL dictation as well, so you can avoid leaving too many blanks.

Obviously none of us can tell exactly what your problem is, because all we know is what you've explained to us in 2 paragraphs. From that amount of information, I would say that you need better foundational medical transcription skills so you can get and keep jobs. Hope that helps a little. Good luck with everything!

I tested for a company and they sent me the test. It is graded the same way it was in the Career Step classes, by a computer. There were inconsistencies in the grading between reports. Most of the things I was counted off for were items of preference between companies and doctors, such as spelling out words or abbreviating, not actual mistakes.

and if yours doesn't match, it marks you off, even if you are correct. There are many posts on here of people who have "failed" the employment test that is "rented out" by CS, including me, and I have 8 years of experience and graduated with honors from CS!

I didn't even apply to your company but for some reason they're all over me, calling and emailing. I type radiology only; I told the recruiter that. I think it's terrible that an MQ recruiter is on this board alluding to threatening MQ employees and former MQ employees about voicing their opinions about this company and that somehow they can figure out who we are. I have applied to Nuance, and already went thru the online process. Also had friends at N submit my resume. I got a voice mail from a "Colleen" at Nuance today, saying she has my resume, but I have to complete some "Assessment", which she has emailed to me, as far as links to follow.
