Hahaha! California - has a new minimum wage

Posted: May 30, 2014

Minimum wage is now $13 an hour.  That may put an end to MTSOs hiring from CA.

How about $26/hour?? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Congresswoman Barbara Lee supports $26 per hour. See link. That would be great!!

I'll keep on hoping. It'd be great to get off - CalFresh and Medi-Cal.

[ In Reply To ..]

The higher minimum of $13 should "filter up" at least - to some degree.

[ In Reply To ..]
If someone's doing a job that's been paying $18/hr when the minimum wage is $9, when you increase the minimum to $13 the people who were making $18 won't just sit idly by and allow the wage differential to disappear. They'll demand that their wages be increased proportionately.

Not in CA - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That really is good news as far as I'm concerned, and I'm not in CA. At least 10% of the US is CA. No way can all MTSOs get out of California without HUGE disruptions. They'd have to really up the ante to recruit replacements outside of CA.
Good for CA, and us.

If you lived here - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
You would not think it was a good thing. The only thing raising the minimum wage does here in CA is raise the prices of everything. Gas hovers around 4 bucks a gallon up to 4.50, food prices go up because of the costs of transporting the food and increasing labor costs. So it may be good for you not in CA, but minimum wage is destroying us poor here in CA. What good is making a few dollars more when it all goes to increased costs of living? Kinda defeats the purpose.

The bad thing about raising minimum wage is something I saw - sm

on the news I had not thought of before: People who own small businesses more than likely have to shut down because they cannot afford to pay their employees any kind of an increase.
California minimum wage - dazed and confused
[ In Reply To ..]
Yea, at first it seems great that minimum wage is raised to such a degree. But, when you think about it, small businesses that pay minimum wage will probably not be able to keep up with the rising minimum wage and go out of business. There goes the government again, thinking it is doing "right" by the people.
Exactly!! I have always hated how WM has pushed out - sm

all those most beloved mom and pop stores. People just cannot make it anymore and I do think big corporations such as WM have a LOT to do with it!!!! I watch old shows and just wish it was that way again.
I haven't set foot in a Walmart for 3+ years. - (Boycott). I also avoid - sm

Safeway & Lucky supermarkets. Instead, I do my big shopping at the local discount supermarket (Grocery Outlet), and smaller trips at the little mom-&-pop store in my neighborhood. I also love our 99-cent store & Dollar Tree. But of course, the best of all for shopping wisely are secondhand stores, flea markets, yard sales, eBay and Craigslist. :)
Small companies usually pay a lot better than - the big ones do. Boycott Walmart.

My concern is how it will effect gas prices, groceries - etc. If they know people are
[ In Reply To ..]
Making more money, will prices go up? Will taxes increase? Just wondering if that will be used as a justifiable reason for the cost of living to go up.
The cost of living goes up, regardless. At least - we would stand a chance, now.

minimum wage - anon

I never understand why people get so happy when minimum wage goes up, sure you make more but virtually everything increases in price to compensate stores having to pay their employees more. In the end you don't come out ahead at all. If you lived in poverty before the increase, you will still live in poverty after it.

The other thing about it is that it often screws over people who were making just slightly above whatever the new minimum is. Where I live when our minimum wage went up $1 the minimum wage workers essentially got a $1 raise, but many of the employees who were already working for the new minimum wage, or just above it, got nothing. They don't give the $1 to everyone across the board, so people who had been with the company for long enough to be making more than minimum wage are now stuck making what new hires are. Pretty unfair.

Second try - sm

How'd you get my post pulled? I merely suggested you move to TX, where you could make less money and be more happy. That hardly seems out of bounds.
After living in San Francisco, I could never be - happy anywhere else. Im spoiled here!

Not even close -- $13 in 2017 - sm

Here's the truth about CA minimum wage:

(05-29) 18:40 PDT Sacramento -- Calling last year's minimum wage hike a good first step, the California Senate approved a measure Thursday that would further lift the pay floor to $13 an hour by 2017.
The bill by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, comes about a month before the state's minimum wage is set to increase from $8 an hour to $9 in July as part of legislation signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last year that also included another $1 per hour by 2016.
SB 935 would override and increase the ladder raise as minimum wage would move to $11 in 2015, $12 in 2016 and $13 by 2017. Starting in 2018, the bill calls for additional adjustments annually for inflation.

Not according to this State of CA document - OCMT

It's $9 an hour effective July 14, 2014.

They already don't hire from CA. - And we need twice that.

I never understood why people from other states would move to Wisconsin, why? We have 5 months of winter (at least) and nothing to do but winter sports or drink. But now realizing that CA is expensive to live even at $13/hour, now I know why they move here. Real estate in WI is cheap compared to other states from what I hear. I would like to live in a warmer climate year-round though...
