had difficulty finding a job with an MTSO and suspect it is because you live in CA (they probably don't like the fair worker's laws we have here, ie, having to pay our benefit rate for OT, having to pay for NJA, etc).

I'm addressing any MTs who have RECENTLY gotten hired by an MTSO AND live in CA. Not ones who live in CA (like me) who have had their jobs for over 3 years or so........

I live in CA also and did have difficulty finding a job last year with MTSOs outside of CA, and was told by some they did not hire in CA. I, however, was eventually successful landing a job within the last 8 months.

As far as our fair worker's laws here, have you been able to get your employer to follow these laws, i.e., paying you for NJA? I have not, though would like info on how this has worked for you if you are being paid for NJA now by a large MTSO? I imagine the little work I have now would completely disappear and I would be forced out of my position should this CA law be brought to their attention.

The reason is not the fair labor laws. The reason is that it is sm - Tired and Old

The reason is that it is much more expensive to have an employee in California than most other states due to higher employer taxes. There is also more paperwork to file. California makes it difficult to have remote employees from their state.

I resepectfully have to agree with it being the cost of out of state businesses employing CA. workers.

I worked for 7 years traveling as a HIM consultant. There were always issues with the hours/days in a row that I worked as a California resident vs. other empoloyees on the same assignment that were not from Cali. The businesses are legally required to go by Cali labor laws if their employees reside in Cali.

My guess would be it is easier for an MTSO to hire employees that are not bound by the strict labor laws that Cali has, if they have no employees that fall under those laws they can impose schedules without having to make sure what employee is governed by what law. I think they like to hire employees from states that follow the same labor laws and it makes for a lot less hassle for the company.

I, too, live in California. I'm a level-3 MT, getting mostly ESLs and other difficult dictators. I've brought my QA percentage down from 22 to 20% but it's impossible for me to go any lower with what I'm being routed. It looks like our job description has changed dramatically. I guess if you are a Pathology Transcriptionist, the place to be is Orange, California. Two in-house positions open at the same time, being recruited by different MTSOs.
