Exit Strategy - John Doe

Posted: Nov 26, 2013

I've pursued this line of work more out of obligation rather than choice. I know where the wind is blowing, so I'm going back to school for my Associate of Applied Science. But I'll have to juggle work and school for 2 years. I currently work an "Indian QA" company. I had a rocky start, such that I had considered quitting and I take my chances with another company. I wisely stuck with them (after advice from this very board), and it's a good thing I did, because the seemingly better prospect didn't pan out. The "Indian QA" has a schedule that doesn't butt heads with my class schedule, and it has treated me better than MModal or Nuance. They've even had me do some QA work on my primary. The primary is on Dragon/EditScript, a program which fits me like a glove. But there are the occasional problems with low volumes, and that tends to get worse this time of year. They've recently given me a backup account. But its TERRIBLE. It uses a different system that's as far from user friendly as you can get, with difficult dictators who also happen to fly the verbatim flag like tyrannical jerks. My primary got easier after time and perseverance, but I was on fairly generous orientation pay when I was learning it, and I didn't have the aforementioned coursework that I will have to juggle with any job. I have already asked my supervisor to be released from the backup, and am fearful this will make me seem like an ingrate, given how helpful they have been thus far. The school has a fairly good career services program, so I'm wondering if maybe I should leave the MT profession earlier than anticipated. I can't imagine very many MT companies offering student friendly schedules (thought I've never had to ask for one before), and I can't picture my current company upgrading me now.

Have you considered - sm

working at another company as an IC? I decided to go back to school but in order to do that I needed a more flexible work schedule. I got a job as an IC and worked 2 hours in the early morning, did school, 3 hours in the mid afternoon, did school and then worked a couple hours at night. It sounds like a crazy/hard schedule but it wasn't too bad. Good luck to you

For Those On PM I Think I Figured Out The Strategy...
Jul 16, 2014

Well ever since the contest I have gotten completely new dictators and some new accounts.  All of which I can't keep up.  I have a feeling that the easier work was assigned to those in the contest.  That is the only thing I can think of.  Either that or they are trying to get rid to of me.  At this point, hope to be fired.  I don't know how much more of this I can take.   ...

Strategy To Diminish Labor Contribution
Nov 23, 2012

Thank you for the point blank statement concerning your labor force. Ever heard the old saying, You can't beat a dead horse? Your stable of producers and seasoned workers has mostly gone on to greener pastures (or quit the profession entirely). Most of what you have coming in are green and untrained, so what is your plan for them (to get even greater leverage out of the workforce that is left)? All the whip-cracking, threats, and demeaning Emails, is that going to give the Unlearned ...

Cutting Shift Differentials Is A Preemptive Strategy (sm)
Dec 26, 2010

The recent reduction in shift differentials is the first phase of reducing the workforce during those hours.  You can expect there to be an eventual phase-out of the shift differentials altogether.  Why?  The ultimate goal is to utilize offshore vendors for that work.  This pressurized reduction in income opportunitywill cause some natural attrition:  Some will not be able to afford the pay loss, some will be upset and simply quit.  It will take a little time but ...

Exit Interview / Survey
Jul 07, 2012

A couple of days ago I received a phone call that I guess was an exit interview/survey. They asked questions on very specific subjects, which led me to believe the company knows where it's failing. The questions were multiple choice (satisfied, dissatisfied, etc.), and asked specifically about CCM communication, benefits/PTO, line count with straight typing vs VR, and if there were any issues considered to be unethical or illegal. For what good it did, I did let them know how dissatisfie ...

Had My Exit Interview Today
Aug 05, 2013

Had my exit interview today and was BRUTALLY honest.  I would like to think I helped the rest of ya all still in this business, but probably not.  I explained in very frank words that twice working for Medqust/M Modal was two times too many.  On the question of how M Modal can maintain a low turnaround in employees and make working with them better, I went with STOP off-shoring all the work, STOP the NJA, STOP the threats of firing with a failed audit.  Keeping the work in the US will solve ...

Why Bother With Exit Interviews

when all they have to do is read this board to find out why MTs are leaving?  Not that I expect any logical actions from them but since they are paying an outside company to do the interviews, this is an added expense.   ...

Exit Interview Phone Call Today
Aug 06, 2012

I left MM a few weeks ago and today got a call. They asked lots of questions about how satisfied or unsatisfied I was with MM and I answered them all as honestly as I could. When they asked if I thought any of their practices were illegal or unethical...I told them that hiring people to work for you and then expecting them to use their PTO or go without pay when there was not enough work was extremely unethical. Especially when you have many MTs with NJA daily and others with mandatory OT someti ...

Medquist's "exit And Disposal" Plan
May 30, 2010

I found this on Medquist's latest quarterly financial report. It's pretty self-explanatory, although I think it is probably for the suits, as we MT/MEs don't get any severance pay. But it gets me that they can nonchalantly say that the employees who are about to be "disposed" of aren't even aware of it.     http://www.dailyfinance.com/headlines/medquist-inc/medq/nas?tab=0   2009 Restructuring Plan      During the third and fourth ...

New Exit Interview "pilot Program"
May 08, 2015
