ESL speaking in English and native language??? - zippy

For the last several weeks I have been sending reports for a particular MD to QA with lots of blanks. No problems with other MDs or PAs, just that one. Found out a couple of days ago that I'm not the only one sending lots of blanks back for the same MD. Finally got a couple of my QAs back and there was a notation that the facility is working with this MD to take English classes because the blanks have been words/phrases from the native language. Seriously?!?! I'm missing out on part of my line counts because this MD can't speak English. Grrrr........... I could use that money on bills.

I would strongly support dictation classes for anyone dictating no matter how long they have been dictating or what their native language is. Even a refresher course on dictation for the ones that took the class would be great. I know, that's just my wishful thinking.

I was living in NY and transcribing an infectious disease doctor from Russia. She was really a very bad dictator. I asked the owner of the company the best way to handle her. She told me to give her verbatim transcription. So I did. For three years I transcribed what I understood and left blanks where that was impossible. Then all of a sudden she was getting much better. I asked about it and was told that her speech pattern had created a problem for the group's liability insurance. Either she had to take ESL classes and improve her dictation within 12 months, or the group's insurance would be canceled. (she was really bad to start a sentence, change her mind, but you had no idea what words the new thoughts were replacing - hence, her dictation was extraordinarily contradictory). I ended up transcribing her reports for almost 6 years, and she did get better once her the partners in her group had a reason to force the issue.

I'm getting docked points for this mess. Looking for a new position as we speak. I'm not one to refuse work, especially needing the money, but there is no way I can be productive having to decipher what is English and what is the MDs native language. The English part is horrible to boot.

I had known of this guy for years being as he was from the state where I live. His speech was horrible and he could hardly do an interview with all the dems, dats and dos. He married a lady, a highly professional one at that and she apparently felt the same as me and got him English lessons. What an improvement!

Okay..... anyone else having trouble with ASR translating the English language tonight? Once facilities start using VR/SR or having a physician use Dragon/canned reports, they should realize that as long as a report is "medically correct" (i.e., the correct spelling of a medical word) that is as good as the report should be. Does anybody really think Dr. Jones is going to make a complete coherent sentence as he is dictating; or, Dr. Shaleplcakeeoa (made up name) is going to make a sentence that makes sense in English versus his own interpretation of the English language? ...

I have noticed, when interviewing for certain companies, some obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes in the emails I receive from them. While these companies strive for perfection in accuracy (which includes spelling words right and marking possession with an apostrophe, mind you), sometimes it looks like their emails have been written by ESL employees. Let me tell you what happened to me the other day. I am traveling next week to Houston. I called a hotel there to make reservations. I said my name and then since it is sort of a long one, said let me spell that for you. So I finally decided to submit a remedy ticket about the months coming through not capitalized (have you all noticed this?). Since switching to Native EP, my lines per hour have been running around 130. One day I decided to really apply myself to see how much better I could do, so I focused, did not give in to distractions, was fortunate to get decent dictators, had about 50/50 ISR and straight, and still only achieved barely 160. In the same way, are they crying for USA should belong to only native Americans and all others should be pushed out of US for the sake of getting jobs to the native people. I'm trying to get an answer from my CCM regarding foreign doctor's dictation and this 5% QA submission. I type for two separate teaching hospitals and are constantly getting new foreign doctors, 3/4s of which cannot even speak English. I won't matter if I got copies of every single report they dictate, there would be no way not to send these reports to QA....are we getting any kind of special consideration towards our QA submissions for these doctors? They expect us to understand their Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Indian, Filipino, Hispanic accents when they can't even put a simple English sentence together! The hospitalists are the worst. I think they hire them right off the boat from their overseas countries and put them to work in the hospitals-- probably as cheap as they can get them, and then put them on VR. I have had Shorthand for about a year and have never had a problem with it. Recently I noticed some of the words I have in it type out wrong. Costing me a lot of time to have to go back and fix. Sometimes if I erase and type again, then it will come out correctly. Anyone have a similar problem with Shorthand? Would it have anything to do with my license expiring in about 3 weeks? ...

I had a horrible sound quality report from a dictator I'd never done before. He wasn't too bad, but the sound quality was terrible and it was a surgical speciality that is not too common and I've maybe had one other report on that speciality in the last 3 months.
