Language transcription - Wannabe24

My son is interested in doing translation from Russian to English, or vice versa, from home.  He still has one semester to finish in college, but is fluent.  I know the medical field but not this one.  Is anyone familiar with legitimate websites for this type of work?  There is just too much out there to sort out, and I don't know the critique sites that would be helpful.  I appreciate any information you can give.  Thanks!

I was job searching on Craig's List today and - IMANMT2

I found this ad, there was another one for translantion but didn't list Russian, wouldn't hurt to ask.

Translators needed (MWC)
compensation: Paid on a monthly basis at 10% of ad revenue for native version of site monthly salary would be around 2,000 - 3,000 (estimate).

just looking, I don't think the Craig's List ads pay much. I think they are kind of lower end of the spectrum some of them.

Some other options would be State Department, the government contracts for translation services. There are translation services (probably the Virginia/DC/Maryland area especially) who would have a need, and don't laugh, the CIA (Someone has to translate and/or transcribe those miles and miles of recordings into transcripts or proof what the software fi there is any churns out).

I did some searching on writing jobs blogs, articles, translantion, technical writing; this all popped up.

If there is a national association of "whatever" related to Russian translation or translators in general they might be able to help.

If he knows how to go online and browse the government contracts and solicitations posted he could go that route, but he would need to be CCR registered with a DNS # to actually be awarded a contract (just list your biz with Dunn and Bradstreet - sounds more than it is). I think you can bid it and as long as you're registered before it's awarded you're good. There isn't a lot of money in subcontracting or working for someone else. His skill is unique.

Odesk, Elance, Thumbtack, there are a lot of places to post your services for freelance work. Even a blog and/or answering e-mails, etc., for a blog.

oh, look at this a quick google search of - IMANMT2

I forget how they charge you when you get a job through them. Some sites are stinkier than others.

he should throw up a website on the internet, that way if anyone does search for Russian translation (if he has the right SEO - search and optimization content) his site will pop up on anybody's radar who is perusing the net.

I'd say encourage him, if he has any ambition, to be self-employed and the prime contractor no middle man dipping in or sponging off his skill set.

The problem I have with O-Desk and E-Lance - is youre bidding against Indians, Pakistanis, etc.

So back to the same old problem. And of course the clients doing the advertising for help want fabulous work for peanuts.

Totally agree with this. - Feather Tuscadero

I've tried to find writing jobs on there but I get outbid by an offshorist bidding $10 for an entire project.
I finally did get a side job transcribing - life history interviews, but - msg

it was just something I lucked into. I work for an acquaintance who is a photographer, and started getting into doing life history books with photos, etc. It's been great - she gives me a CD with several days' worth of interviews on it, and I use Express Scribe to do the transcription in an easy conversational format.

If there comes a time when her work isn't enough for me, she already knows other historians, genealogists and writers who want help with their projects, as well.

We work out the per-minute charge in such a way that it comes out to $20/hour for me, and I only accept cash.

This was a word-of-mouth gig that arose from a casual conversation about work. I think verbal networking is the best way to find good work. If something is advertised online, you have to figure you've already lost it because there will be far too much competition.

So I'm becoming a big believer in telling everyone: Friends, relatives, my dentist, the veterinarian - everyone - that I'm looking for at-home side jobs doing transcription, manuscripts, or word processing.

SR/VR - The Demise Of The English Language
Nov 10, 2012

Once facilities start using VR/SR or having a physician use Dragon/canned reports, they should realize that as long as a report is "medically correct" (i.e., the correct spelling of a medical word) that is as good as the report should be.  Does anybody really think Dr. Jones is going to make a complete coherent sentence as he is dictating; or, Dr. Shaleplcakeeoa (made up name) is going to make a sentence that makes sense in English versus his own interpretation of the English language?  ...

ESL Speaking In English And Native Language???
Jun 10, 2014

For the last several weeks I have been sending reports for a particular MD to QA with lots of blanks.  No problems with other MDs or PAs, just that one.  Found out a couple of days ago that I'm not the only one sending lots of blanks back for the same MD.  Finally got a couple of my QAs back and there was a notation that the facility is working with this MD to take English classes because the blanks have been words/phrases from the native language.  Seriously?!?!  I ...

Spelling/grammatical Mistakes: English First Language
Feb 23, 2013

I have noticed, when interviewing for certain companies, some obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes in the emails I receive from them. While these companies strive for perfection in accuracy (which includes spelling words right and marking possession with an apostrophe, mind you), sometimes it looks like their emails have been written by ESL employees. It's weird that after speaking with some of these people, their writing skills don't match their speaking skills. Maybe I'm j ...

Oh "Phil" If Only You Truly Understood The English Language
Jan 29, 2015

So I finally decided to submit a remedy ticket about the months coming through not capitalized (have you all noticed this?). I explained that when a complete date is dictated it seems to do fine, but if the month is just used in a sentence, such as "in September" they are not capatlized.  When is a month not supposed to be capitalized?  These used to be correct but for many months now they haven not been. So I get a call from "Phil" who wants me to explain the problem. He doesn't ...

GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION
May 17, 2010

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession.   I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India.   Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts.   GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...

A Day Without Transcription?
May 28, 2010

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand. Impossible, I know, but I bet employers would sit up and take notice. ...
