English speaking, I think NOT! - just a little ole MT

Just got done transcribing garbage...there is no way that was any kind of English I recognized. Awful Asian dialect!
an accent is not a dialect - sm

A dialect is a form of a language. If they were dictating in an Asian dialect, you would have to be a speaker of that dialect. If you dislike accents, I would recommend getting out of MT.
accent/dialect - just a little ole MT

Well, thank you for the correction, it is much appreciated. Seems I am getting nothing but the cream of the crop today on a new account, and even though I have been doing this for 20+ years it is a struggle today as all of us know some days are. And getting out, it is exactly what I'm going to do in a less than a year, got a plan and will be doing something entirely different by this time next year! I'm not going down with this sinking ship!
Way to explain - Accent vs dialect
[ In Reply To ..]
Best example I can give is this: Since I'm from the Northern U.S., to me, Southerners have an accent. When a Southerner says "y'all," that is where the dialect comes into play.
Lil Ole, some more info--the ship already sank. THAT is - why you are gulping for air. Not

our poor, embattled physicians. Ever wonder what it must be like to be rushed for time trying to express complex ideas in a bizarrely complex FIFTH or SIXTH language? Probably not, but in any case, THEY are not your real problem. A little late, but suggest you start paddling hard for shore now.
Now, THERE you hit the nail RIGHT on the head! - Wish I could hit "like" several dozen times

why I don't post often on here, NOT! Why do some people have nothing nice to say at all? I was having a bad day, and I came here to vent a little, instead I get a lesson on the English language of what dialect and accent mean, and condescending, nasty, smart alecky comments. It's easy to be nasty when you don't have to say it in someone's face. And the ship has not sunk yet, you still have a job, don't you??? As I do, but soon changing careers and leaving all this crap behind including the vile spewed on this site!
Asian dictators - I feel your pain
[ In Reply To ..]
I actually have grown fond of them, but used to drive me nuts at first.
One rule of thumb that helped me out a lot, and you may already know this, but L's are pronounced as R's, and R's are pronounced as L's.
I love the accent (or dialect--I'm so confused now I don't know which is which), but the voice of the dictator is what I thinks makes it so challenging. They tend to be either soft and low-pitched and monotone.
Anyhow... I hope your tomorrow is better and your future is bright!!
Huh? - Who was nasty?

Maybe we're just trying to help? Ever think of that? Sorry you're misinterpreting help here. I personally rather thought the example about an accent vs dialect (the y'all thing) was brilliant. Maybe it's because I'm the person wrote it....
Chill, darlin'. We're all stressed to the max. Or, actually, I got out of this godforsaken biz, so I'm not as stressed as y'all are right now!
I don't see how dialect vs accent matters. Y' all went off on a - tangent off topic

She was just letting off steam about an Asian dictator and got nit picked on semantics.
Because if the dictation was truly - performed in a dialect

it would be unreasonable for her employer to expect her to be able to transcribe it unless she knew the dialect. However, since what she meant was that the she was baffled by the dictator's accented English, it could reasonably be argued that the ability to deal with accented English is a skill MTs are expected to possess and a sufficiently trained and knowledgeable MT should be able to deal with accented English.
If you know your stuff, you can understand even the most heavily accented English.

I think the person who posted "an accent is not a dialect" came across as nasty. The first part of the message was okay. The second part where the person says if you dislike accents, I would recommend getting out of MT. That is the part I thought was nasty.
Exactly and the one who suggested I start paddling... - just a little ole MT

Apparently got to be pretty thick skinned around here so I guess I'll take my sinking ship and head for high ground!
I am from the south so that comment didn't bother me. Hope y'all have a nice day!
Little ole - I like to learn
[ In Reply To ..]
I like to learn and have a learned a lot on this site, especially when people correct misconceptions I have had. I don't regard that as "nasty." Just saying.
Sometimes it is just unrecognizable - Makes you wonder

Don't you just wonder how they communicate with patients.
Yes, I do... - just a little ole MT

And I think I would not want them as a doctor. If I can't understand what they are dictating, I probably would miss important information if they were telling me something face to face, too.
[ In Reply To ..]
My dad said,"I don't like my doctor, I cannot understand anything he says."
I said, "Why don't you just get a new doctor?"
This explains why some doctors will dictate paragraphs of patient noncompliance - many times they would have been compliant with the recommendations if they even understood what the doctor said!
Let me tell you what happened to me the other day. I am traveling next week to Houston. I called a hotel there to make reservations. I said my name and then since it is sort of a long one, said let me spell that for you. Well no matter how much spelling I did, breaking it down into slow, 3 letters at a time, the person NEVER got it on the other end. I spelled the last name probably a total of 6 times total. In order to get confirmation through my email, it is my last name and then first and you ...
For the last several weeks I have been sending reports for a particular MD to QA with lots of blanks. No problems with other MDs or PAs, just that one. Found out a couple of days ago that I'm not the only one sending lots of blanks back for the same MD. Finally got a couple of my QAs back and there was a notation that the facility is working with this MD to take English classes because the blanks have been words/phrases from the native language. Seriously?!?! I ...
Today I will make less than half of what I normally get because all I've gotten today are crappy, hard to understand dictators, both ESL and English-speaking. Seems like all I get lately are the hard to understand, mush-mouth dictators. Guess Nuance doesn't want their MTs making quota. Sorry. I just had to vent. ...
Okay..... anyone else having trouble with ASR translating the English language tonight? For the most part I have pretty good dictators, but for some reason ASR is having trouble recognizing the English language tonight... I (or anyone for that matter) should not have this much editing on clearly speaking English dictators!!!!!
BUT, on the flip side of that rant.... ASR did actually recognize gabepentin and Ativan in the same document... I feel like Alice in W ...

Once facilities start using VR/SR or having a physician use Dragon/canned reports, they should realize that as long as a report is "medically correct" (i.e., the correct spelling of a medical word) that is as good as the report should be. Does anybody really think Dr. Jones is going to make a complete coherent sentence as he is dictating; or, Dr. Shaleplcakeeoa (made up name) is going to make a sentence that makes sense in English versus his own interpretation of the English language?  ...
I'm trying to get an answer from my CCM regarding foreign doctor's dictation and this 5% QA submission. I type for two separate teaching hospitals and are constantly getting new foreign doctors, 3/4s of which cannot even speak English. I won't matter if I got copies of every single report they dictate, there would be no way not to send these reports to QA....are we getting any kind of special consideration towards our QA submissions for these doctors? My CCM I don't think has ...
These two links can be quite handy for new MTs and old MTs alike. They have a list of commonly misused English words. Thought I'd share!

They expect us to understand their Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Indian, Filipino, Hispanic accents when they can't even put a simple English sentence together! The hospitalists are the worst. I think they hire them right off the boat from their overseas countries and put them to work in the hospitals-- probably as cheap as they can get them, and then put them on VR. My MTSO increased their line requirements for this year and with over 30 years' experience, I struggle ...
About half of the dictators from my new account are Indian, most of them mumblers, so I'm going crazy. They can barely speak English. Wondering why there are so many Indian dictators here? ...
I have noticed, when interviewing for certain companies, some obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes in the emails I receive from them. While these companies strive for perfection in accuracy (which includes spelling words right and marking possession with an apostrophe, mind you), sometimes it looks like their emails have been written by ESL employees.
It's weird that after speaking with some of these people, their writing skills don't match their speaking skills. Maybe I'm j ...
"Strictly verbatim" makes me sick, especially when we now have - what? - maybe 60 to 70% ESL dictators on many accounts. I can't begin to tell you how rotten some of my dictators are, but you can only change it if it's so bad that it's incomprehensible. Otherwise, leave the stench alone.
It's actually wearing me down mentally and emotionally.

I think some of these companies are pushing their luck. They either like you or they don't. Some of these tests are too easy. Some of them led me to believe I was applying for an internship after medical school. I admit I had to look up some of the answers because I didn't train to become a pediatric medical transcriptionist. Since when do we have MT specialty certficates? I have transcribed just about everything they can do to you in a uni ...
I have had Shorthand for about a year and have never had a problem with it. Recently I noticed some of the words I have in it type out wrong. Costing me a lot of time to have to go back and fix. Sometimes if I erase and type again, then it will come out correctly. Anyone have a similar problem with Shorthand? Would it have anything to do with my license expiring in about 3 weeks? ...

Compared to the old Medquist (M Modal), Nuance is a piece of cake.
Wish there were more options like the good old days but looks like Nuance and M Modal is buying all the MT companies and ensuring there is no competion to allow MTs to make more money. ...
I had a horrible sound quality report from a dictator I'd never done before. He wasn't too bad, but the sound quality was terrible and it was a surgical speciality that is not too common and I've maybe had one other report on that speciality in the last 3 months. I had to leave a BIG bunch of blanks. Hated to do it. Of coure it was many more over what I am allowed, so I turned it in to QA and was looking forward to seeing what the corrections were because that is a good learni ...
I spoke my mind by sending this to all MQ addresses I could gather. I got canned for it. Not worried about it though. Maybe it will make a difference. I sure hope so. Here it is:

At almost everyone of our weekly meetings there is a coworker who complains about everything. She is never happy and monopolizes each and every meeting. I know she doesn't speak for me, not sure about everyone else, but she speaks up as though she has conferenced with us all and that we are all in agreement. How do I politley tell her to stop whining unless she specifically speaks for herself? I am happy with my job, my pay rate, my hours.........everything that ...
I have the Standard version 10 and had to deal with a lot of bug issues with it. I love the program, but I didn't like the constant problems with trying to download updates, etc. (I have Vista).
I wondered if anyone else out there bought this updated version and was pleased with it. I'm hoping to hear that they have the bugs worked out of this program, as the program itself is great and a valuable assest to an MT who types in Word.

I have been trying to figure out for two days (even reading the tutorial) on how to import my MS word autocorrect/autoexpansions into this program to no avail.D
Did anyone else have this experience and, if so, what did you find helped you to "crack" whatever code is needed? It doesn't come with many, if any preloaded expanders and the medical expanders on the download site require yet MORE downloads to install them (and to pay for them as well).
Any suggestions appreciated bef ...
I've been a member of this board for years and feel it's time to speak out from a business owner's perspective. I see a lot of negativity against MTSOs (maybe it's just the big ones but still it touches a nerve) and just wanted to give my 2 cents. Not all of us are greedy, mean, nasty, evil people. I can't speak for everyone but as for myself, I don't consider myself that way at all and my team of transcriptionists doesn't think so either. As a ...

It's that cold time of year, where the MT is forced to listen to dictators with a LOT of snot in their noses, which they periodically loudly sniff back and swallow. Unfortunately, I have a very vivid imagination, and the mental image of makes me almost gag.
Another annoying thing is when doctors speak in a low, barely audible voice, but their "S's" come out with a whistle, so each time you turn the sound up, you get the loud, shrieking whistle ...
