Bringing the Qualified Text (QT) subject over here. - Wondering

Posted: Jan 14, 2012

I am under the impression that QT is canned text that we bring into the report and add text at certain spots when the dictator specifies?

I used to do a lot of ophthalmology reports. Surgeon would say: Please insert my normal phacoemulsification with IOL implant. Then they would dictate which eye, how many diopters, model and size of lens, etc.

Does QT also sometimes just show up on the report that comes up and then we just add what is dictated?

How long does it take to bring in the QT?

Thank you.

QT on Emdat - EmdatQA

Here is how it works on the Emdat platform:

You get a job, let's say it is a 18-second dictation. The doctor gives identifying info, which you verify against the demographics that pulls in with the report. At the first insertion point in the report, a "jump to" spot, the doctor says "enter my normal for cataract extraction." You can either use your mouse or a combination of keystrokes (like Ctl-Alt-single letter). A window pops up almost immediately with a list of template choices. Either use the mouse or the down arrow to choose the one you need, then tab to enter the selection and close that window or use the mouse. The template will insert and you are done. The spell check runs and uploads the report and you move on to the next dictation.

In this example, you earned 24 lines for something that took you maybe 45 seconds. If you are paid at 1 CPL, your pay is 24 cents.

Using the same scenario, if the doctor goes on to say: "please change the following in the third paragraph": You go to that spot and what you type overwrites the template you pulled in. Let's say you type 3 lines based on the changes dictated. You then have earned the template lines at template pay, plus 3 lines at your regular transcribed rate.

Any of the blanks you fill in within the template are paid at your regular transcription rate including the IOL model, right/left eye, diopter size, etc.

Another form of QT is in the built-in headers. If your document opens and already has the headers plugged in, the company may claim those as QT and you see it with a yellow highlight coating each of those characters. Everything you see not highlighted is paid at your normal transcription rate. QT could also include some or all of the demographic information.

Conversely, you can get a large template where you huge line counts. Let's say it is spinal injections. You might get 60 lines where you fill in the spinal level being injected and the medication. Or the doctor says "use my standard risk template" and you get 40 lines from something that takes you 5 seconds to load in.

All of this is determined by the MTSO and does vary per company/client, so it is very important to know their pay structure before you accept the job.

Thanks for the info. That answers a lot. I still wish . . . - Wondering

. . . They would consider paying hourly to MTs as opposed to production.

I know eventually I will have to do QT in addition to the VR and straight transcription I already do. I can tell the difference in my own speed when I get several VR or straight reports in a row. One more thing to switch back and forth.

Now that I understand better the procedure for QT it seems relatively fair considering. Just not what I want!

Qualified Text?
May 06, 2010

Does anybody work for a company that pays less for something called "qualified text" or in other words pays less for templates, like 10 cpl for transcription but only 5 cpl for the template lines?  Were you with them when they paid full rate for those lines?  I am trying to find out how much impact (perhaps percentage) this has on the bottom line - a paycheck.  The company I work for is going to start doing this and I am wondering how much it is going to hurt.  Obviously it w ...

Little Giggle On The Painful Subject
Jul 11, 2011

Found this on an educational site.  Made me giggle a little.  How accurate is this?  My favorite is the first line in the 2nd paragraph and the last line of the 3rd.  Ya, right. Medical transcription jobs are forecasted to increase 11% from 2008 until 2018.  This increase in jobs is greater than average for other occupations.  As the average age of the population increases, the demand for transcriptionist services will also increase.  Older ...

Bringing Antitrust To The Top
Nov 23, 2012

Someone asked to explain what antitrust means.  Antitrust laws were put in place by the US government and are intended to prevent companies from controlling prices and reducing competition (i.e. monopoly).  Nuance is under investigation for violation of these laws.  Yes, as someone said, it will be tied up in the courts for a long time, but it doesn't mean nothing, contrary to what the poster said.  It means that there is enough evidence against Nuance to warrant in ...

Bringing Work Back To America
Mar 05, 2012

Not long ago I was watching a news story about several manufacturing companies that had found, after shipping work overseas and seeing quality drop precipitously, a way to bring the work back to U.S. soil that actually LOWERED their overhead, INCREASED quality, and RAISED their profits. One company in particular made some sort of an appliance that was assembled with quite a few screws that are put in by hand.  They shipped the work to China, and quality suffered.  They also had to hire a lo ...

Shortage Of Qualified MTs?
Jul 01, 2010

The following is on page 13 of Medquist's 1st quarter filing to the SEC.  Apparently by "qualified" they mean willing to work for peanuts and take all the abuse they dish out.  Usually when there is a shortage of workers in a particular industry, it drives wages up.  Funny how it doesn't work that way in MT. Significant developments in the clinical documentation industry include: A shortage of qualified domestic medical transcriptionists (MTs) and medical editors (ME ...

Question About Nuance Policy On Qualified (template) Lines
Dec 03, 2014

I was originally with one of the ambulatory groups that came through the back door of Nuance.  Our old ways of doing things have slowly been phased out since Nuance acquired us.  Currently I get 8.5 cpl for standard lines and 1 cpl for qualified (template) lines.  I haven't gotten the email about the video yet, but I've been reading on here about the new 7 cpl rate. Particularly I never know what to do about headings.  If they never dictate headings, it is no problem - I do not put them in.  But if they dictate no headings, until all of a sudden towards the end of the report, they dictate one random heading, then it makes the rest of the report look stupid without headings. Would you put in headings for continuity in the rest of the report, or leave it looking stupid with, eg, one single heading i ...
