MTSO using qualified text....does it impact (sm) - billie
Posted: Dec 25, 2010the amount of your paycheck very much? I wasn't sure if I should even apply to a MTSO that uses this.
Not really but with some qualifications - sm

I work with a company that has those and I haven't noticed a problem. Obviously it would be nicer if they paid us full rate for canned reports. If you only transcribed qualified text it would not be a good situation- I cannot imagine how many minutes of work you'd have to do make a semi-decent paycheck. But as long as they're just scattered into the course of the day, I haven't noticed a big difference in mine even when I've got 400-500 QT lines per day.
just the math - nothing but the math
[ In Reply To ..]
You say you have 400-500 QT lines per day. Let's imagine you get paid 1 cpl for QT lines and 8 cpl for non-QT lines.
The difference you lose in a day is $28-35 PER DAY. If you work 5 days a week, that is $128-175 PER WEEK. In the course of a year that is $6400-8750 PER YEAR (based on a 50-week working year).
I'm not giving up almost 10 grand a year for qualified text.
It has been my experience with QT work that a more realistic figure would be 200 QT lines per day, and for that reason I work less than even part time and find other work that pays for all text regardless of how it gets loaded in.

It really depends on the accounts, and I may have 500 to 600 lines per pay period. Of course, it all depends on which accounts you work. Some do not use heavy normals, and some do. I am lucky enough that most of my accounts don't have a lot, but the ones that do, it is not really a big deal because I'm not typing anything. To me, that is not that much. You have to look at other things with the company too. I usually always have work and great accounts. That means a lot an increases my speed, which I feel like makes up for the QT lines.
I rarely have any problems with my company. My managers are great, and I read these message boards feeling really bad for a lot of these people on here with what they experience at some of these companies. I think you need to look at the whole situation.
I wouldn't not look at a job for not paying you your full line count for things that you do not have to type.
could you reword this? - huh?

maybe I've had too much eggnog, but could you reword this:
"I wouldn't not look at a job for not paying you your full line count for things that you do not have to type."
It just isn't computing.

The point I was trying to make is that I would not run from a company just because they use QT lines. There are so many other things to also look at. For instance, I don't have a set schedule. I work on TAT. Now, I could get mad and say I'm not working for this company that uses the QT lines and go to another MTSO, but I could end up with one of these that make you choose a set schedule and have to sit for half of it with no work.
I make a good living with this company, and it surprises me for people to say they would refuse to work for a company that uses QT lines.
Seems just one more way to a company to screw you out of making a little extra. sm - SSMT

For all of the times we have to hunt for doctors' names, hospitals, etc. that are referenced in the dictation, fill in demographics and not be paid, etc., it is a nice little bonus to run across a normal. Now they want to take even that little bonus away. I would definitely say no to a company like that.
I've said it before. They cant squeeze more $ out of facilities, so - they will squeeze it out of us. nm

Actually I blame it more on these software companies who started this whole bit....especially Emdat.
But MTSO decides what she will charge. She could as easily charge - reg CPL for QT, but chooses not to do that. nm

Oops. Charge should be pay. She could pay reg CPL for - QT but chooses not to do that. nm

that does this you have exclusives, so it is the same physicians you are typing for over and over. In a very short period of time you know most of the referring doctors in the area, different hosptials in the area, etc, which means very little looking up.
I have heard very few people that work with the company I work with complain as we always have work. There is no over hiring. The difference it makes in my check is so minimal that I didn't even notice when my company started it. Sometimes the QT is just lines that are automatically built into the chart, and you do nothing with it. It is a bonus for the doctor. It keeps them happy and with our company, and since I actually do make fairly decent money and love my accounts, I just get over and don't let it bother me.
This is an excuse to make yourself feel better about working for MTSO - that charges for all lines (including SM
[ In Reply To ..]
QT)but doesnt pay for QT. This is a relatively new thing, MT used to be paid for this. Just another way of MTSO putting the squeeze on us. One or two lines every now and then is not too bad, but often it is paragraphs of text. Dont make excuses for very people that are chipping away at our living.
According to the MTSO, the does not charge - the same
[ In Reply To ..]
for all lines. It is a way to keep themseleves competitive. The clients can chose to set certain things in normals, and they are charged a lesser amount on their invoice. I make a very decent amount working with this company, so why would I complain. I'm not typing the lines. I do not have to mess with VR. Yes, MTs use to be paid for this, and it was an added bonus. Some still do pay for it.
The OP is asking about applying with a company that uses QT lines. I do not know her situation. I know a lot of the people on this board claim to be barely pulling in minimum wage or sitting daily with minimal work. I have loads of work and make way over minimum wage. If you ask people who have worked VR and QT lines in the past, I think you would find most would rather work with QT lines.
The field is changing, has been for years. Maybe I am making myself feel better about my company. MTSOs are not nonprofit organizations. They are there to make money, and I understand that. I have worked for other MTSOs, and this one by far is the best I have worked for.

What is qualified text? Thank you.
Qualified text consists of lines not typed by the MT (sm) - Yochana

headers, canned normals from the doctors, etc. Emdat (Inscribe platform) can detect this and calculates these lines at a different price than the actual typed lines an MT does. Example: Lines typed by MT at 9 cpl and qualified text at 1 cpl. I am not sure if any other platform does this.

That's interesting! Thank you.
It isn't something that is detected. It is - set up as QT.
[ In Reply To ..]
It's not detected. It is info that is preset in the chart. For instance, you open a chart, all of the headers are in place. You don't change them, you just type in the body. If you do have to change them, you get paid your full cpl. Any info you add you get paid for.
A doctor may request that certain parts of his exam are set in normals. They are set in QT lines.
Companies who do this? - sm

I got the hint that it was related to Emdat, which I know quite a few MTSOs use, but would appreciate getting some company names for my own future reference.
Not all MTSOs using EMDAT apply QT lines - nothing but the math

and they charge the client for characters and spaces on the finished product, not just canned text.
Here is my gripe about it: If I pull in a standard template and then I have to do full audio review and find that I have to change maybe 5 words in the report, with QT I don't get paid for having to listen to all that. All I get paid for is the change to those 5 words.
Maybe VR editors feel the same way, but then most VR editors get paid for all they review, not just the changes they may make.
It isn't QT ii you've listened to it. - sm

I'm with the person above who has no complaints about it. Would I rather be paid full line rate for those lines, heck yeah. But it's no biggie because I don't have to listen to anything so it is not at all like VR. My doc says "normal T&A" and I put that qualified text and I'm on my way. If they say the words, I type it and it is no longer QT. For instance, I have some surgeons that right after the patient name say "normal whatever" and so that report is entirely QT except for left/right, anesthesia, assistant. I have others that dictate all the top headings, anesthesia, indications, and procedure in detail, then "normal whatever". The report is done at that point. There is no listening through to make sure it matches. I get paid regular line rate up to and including that colon and then QT rate.
I like my MTSO. They haven't gone VR yet, at this point in time I still have plenty of work, and supervisors are responsive. Considering the horror stories of other MTSOs out there, I have no complaints, and I can't feel badly for not getting paid 9 cpl for something I didn't type anyway.

Qualified Text? May 06, 2010Does anybody work for a company that pays less for something called "qualified text" or in other words pays less for templates, like 10 cpl for transcription but only 5 cpl for the template lines? Bringing The Qualified Text (QT) Subject Over Here. Jan 14, 2012I am under the impression that QT is canned text that we bring into the report and add text at certain spots when the dictator specifies?
I used to do a lot of ophthalmology reports. Surgeon would say: Please insert my normal phacoemulsification with IOL implant. Then they would dictate which eye, how many diopters, model and size of lens, etc.
Does QT also sometimes just show up on the report that comes up and then we just add what is dictated?
How long does it take to bring in the QT?

Impact Of EPIC On Coding Feb 26, 2012I was reading a post on one of the other boards about what an EPIC or point-and-click report looks like and it made me think about what it would be like to code a report like that. I've never actually seen an EPIC report so I don't know. Thanks. ...

Shortage Of Qualified MTs? Jul 01, 2010The following is on page 13 of Medquist's 1st quarter filing to the SEC. Apparently by "qualified" they mean willing to work for peanuts and take all the abuse they dish out. Usually when there is a shortage of workers in a particular industry, it drives wages up. Funny how it doesn't work that way in MT.
