anyone who DOESN'T like working at home? - beulah

just wondering if I'm the only one. Even though I dearly love being an MT.

Reasons being ...

Feel like I don't even know how to have a face-to-face conversation with people anymore.

SO bad for one's health, sitting all day.

Feel trapped in my house.

Stressed because I have to maintain my equipment -- I don't understand computer functions, so need others' help when fix-ups need to be made (kids, husband). Kind of like that one subject everybody has trouble with, in high school, that's me and computers. I'm fine on my typing platform, it's just computerese in general where I have a mental block.

My love for my profession just doesn't compensate for it (nor of course the slashed pay rates the past couple of years). I'm looking and looking for other types of suitable jobs around town, but with the economy it's just not happening. Still waiting and hoping!!

I feel the same way. I'm actually more anxious being at home than out there. The more I interact with people the better I feel. I no longer panic at the grocery store. I thought I was agoraphobic being home for so long. Nope. Just forgot how nice people are LOL. I'm trying to get out too. Stuck at home all the time sucks! There's no separation or off time.

I hate it so much I'd be happy being a door greeter or scrubbing porta Johns for a living. Seriously.

People always say, "Oh you are so lucky to work at home"!! Years ago when my daughter was still in school, I agreed. Now I am bored out of my mind most days. Sending out resumes every week hoping to land some type of office job "out in the world", no luck so far!!

I've had a few interviews for real out-in-the-world jobs. I feel terrific every time I get dressed up for an interview. I WILL eventually get a job, and I will be delighted to be done with my in-home job.

Guess I'm the extreme opposite. I abhor having to work in an office and deal with office politics, culture, drama, bad personalities, gossip, and just general B.S. from co-workers on a daily basis. I would much rather be home, in familiar surroundings, in peace and quiet, not having to fight traffic every day, spend money on bus fare, gas, and clothes, and go to boring meetings. I miss working from home and I'm trying my best to get a work-at-home job again that will pay enough, just not through an MTSO.

Once I'm gone I'm sure I'll miss the no makeup, wear sweatpants, can have a blankie kind of days. I'm sure I'll also miss being inside during freezing winter. Hopefully I can get a job in my town and only have to travel 5-10 minutes to get there. Long distance driving is the worst. But the rest of the WAH stuff...won't miss it at all! At least at the end of the day you can come home, enjoy being at home, and get a separation from the gossipy girls at the office. Working at home, I feel like I'm being monitored. I think being out in the real world again will do me some good. My hubby works 50 hours a week and just wants to come home and sit. I'm stuck in the house all day (with the exception of letting the dog out) and I just want to dress up and go out, so one of us is not happy. People don't believe me when I tell them that being at home day is not all that great. I have no appreciation of coming into my house and kicking back. That's just sad.

Hey, I get it. Working at home is not for everyone. Some need interaction and stimulation from others. As far as monitoring, well, I feel like you're going to be monitored whether you work at home or in an office.

I just want to be out of the office scene altogether. Home is where my heart is, where I feel the most comfortable, and where I can do my best work.

Good luck with finding an in-office position. It does seem like quite a frew hospitals are advertising for in-house transcription jobs lately. Just depends on where you live.

For a good 5 years I thought it was fantastic...no commute, roll out of bed and into desk chair, no money spent on "work wardrobe." But I eventually got to where I wanted to be around people again. I also like the fact that working in an office, I leave work at the office and can't be called to "just hop on for a little bit."

Four years later, I'm getting tired of commuting again!

I've been working at home for over 6 years this go-around, with a 12-year period before that. There are trade-offs we have to make, and never THE perfect situation. Rush hour driving in the snow is awful, no doubt, but the isolation of this is taking a heavy toll on me. I sometimes also worry that my social skills are atrophying. I want out!!

When I left MT and back to work outside the home, my husband took it harder than I did.

Looking back on it, now that the kids are all grown & gone, I don't think I would ever want to work from home again.

I like the routine of getting up, leaving the house every morning & interacting with people outside the home. I never realized how complacent, bored and even somewhat depressed I had become until I went back to work outside the home.

I bought a little metal rack to keep my transcriber and a few things. Moved it out onto the deck in the morning and enjoyed watching the pets and birds while transcribing. Keyboard on pillow on my lap. Loved it.

Becoming pretty much inactive, get up, login and work. Get off, turn on the TV and lay down or maybe spend a few hours on your favorite website. As far as making meals, they are far and few between because you eat in between working, breaks or just grab something totally unhealthy when you get off. For years, I NEVER got dressed. Worked in sweats, pulled my hair back and that was it. For the past six months or so, I get completely dressed, put on makeup, and for some reason, I feel A LOT better now and enjoy my work more! I am needing to replace my computer-- my desktop is so slow it is really nonfunctional and I fried my laptop. My question is, I would prefer to buy another laptop but if I wanted to do work from home, does a laptop really suffice? Got an office job 3 days a week making $15 hour, still will do Mt prn, but won't have to stress anymore about my lines. I am glad I got to stay home with my kids over those years, but if I had to do it again, I would of stayed working.
