Is anyone worried about all the new people going into coding? - still searching

Posted: Jun 16, 2010

I have been thinking about getting into coding, but I am starting to worry as it seems there are a ton of people also wanting to go into the same field. Do you think there will be jobs for all of us?

yes, I am worried about them - besides the market being

[ In Reply To ..]
flooded, coding jobs are also being offshored.

I see the same road ahead for coders as what MTs are dealing with right now.

I don't know how accurate it would be to base the number of people going into coding on this forum, it seems that the same people post over and over. People start training programs and never finish, so it's really difficult to have an accurate number. All professions are flooded with people looking for work, not just coding and MT. With coding, it would also depend on the kind of job you are seeking, entry level, inpatient, outpatient, or an analyst or consulting job. Are you "worried" because you are a coder or coding student?

I am worried because I am a student. - stillsearching

That is a good point about not judging the numbers just based on this forum. However, the counselor at my school said you had to sign up for classes fast as they fill up quickly, which tells me it isn't just this forum? I am going to a CC, so I am not sure which setting I would like to work in and can't figure out if hospital or doctor office would be more stable/reliable.
Good luck with your classes - sm - Anonymous

And I do share your concern about finding a coding job.

Im still in MT, considered coding, but it seems any - job (especially in medical field, -sm

but also in just about all other sectors) that require English skill, intellect, and keyboarding skill are being offshored. So I'm:
a) Getting out of medicine altogether - I think the entire healthcare industry is in for a rocky ride in the next decade or two, and I'm already queasy enough as it is.
b) Looking for something - anything - that requires that I, myself, be phyically present, and that cannot be done by some invisible little speck in a country half a world away.

What are you going to do? sm - stillsearching

I do understand your reasoning. What are you going to do or thinking of doing?

something like this:

The pay from the ad posted was around 20 bucks an hour, seems to be part time, but if you lived near a large campus you may be able to do more than part time... worth looking into I think.

I'm wondering where you are seeing all these new people going into coding? What are you seeing that has you worried???

There are hundreds of thousands of coders in the US. In 2006, an AHIMA/AHA survey found that employers struggle to fill coding jobs, with about 18% of coding jobs, about 1 in 5, going unfilled. The Department of Labor estimates a 20% increase in jobs within the next 10 years.

I guess just from reading this forum it seemed like a lot of people were switching over to coding. Then when my counselor told me to hurry and pick my classes, as they fill up fast it just made me think that maybe the coding field will be over floaded with new coders. I am just nervous as I don't want to spend money/time and then not be able to find a job! Thanks for the reassurance on your post. It makes me feel better hearing the stats.

If you are going to a community college the classes that are included in the coding program are also included in the MT programs, the office assistants programs, the nursing programs, a lot of others, so even though your classes might 'fill up quick' it's not just coders who are filling up those classes. This is especially true if this is your first term, whereas your specific coding courses will probably come towards the end of your training.

Good luck!
Thank you and you are 100% correct on that! sm - stillsearching

You are right. It is my 1st term and I forgot that the classes are also included in all those other programs! Thanks for helping. It does make me feel better. Glad to have a place to go to ask questions and get some good answers! Thanks again!

When People Take The 'Shortcut' To Coding Courses, How Do They Reason It?
Sep 15, 2012

I would like to hear from some coding students who took shortcut coding classes about why they chose to do that? It seems purposeless if your goal is to get a job. It also seems entirely worthless if the goal is to become a professonal coder, because they won't be eligible for the credentials test that counts, the CCS.  Did I miss something? ...

Will More People With Health Insurance = More Medical Coding And Billing Jobs?

Worried...RE: TTS
May 14, 2011

So, maybe I have set myself up to be worried.  I have read so much bad stuff about TTS.  I just started a job there and haven't had any trouble thus far, so I can't vouche for the complaints I have read.  Are there any other current TTS employees out there that enjoy working there?  I have never ran out of work.  I can't speak for getting paid on time yet because my first payday isn't until this weekend. So far, all I can say is good things. They wer ...

Worried
Jan 26, 2015

It seems like more transcription is being offered for in-house rather than IC at home jobs. Tonight I went online and put 'work at home medical transcription jobs' and after going through all the transcription school ads, I only found 2 companies hiring for at home work, the others were all in an office or hospital setting.  It seems as though the demand for going in-house is getting greater every day.  Because of my blind Schnauzer, I need to be at home for those times when ...

Veteran MT - Worried
May 13, 2011

I have recently returned to the national arena after having a HORRIBLE experience with an in-house transcriptionist position.  I have tested with several companies who used to have a good reputation on this board.  I have been offered 3 positions and I am at a loss as to what to do because it seems that there is not ONE of these companies that has a good reputation anymore. Actually, there is not ONE company on this board that has a good reputation PERIOD.  I understand ever ...

Sep 23, 2010

or a patient dying because of mistakes made in dictation/transcription, then why in the world is it acceptable for any dictator, be it MD, PA, NP, etc. to get on the phone to dictate half asleep, eating, or even probably drunk and get so confused themselves that there is no way you can understand what they are trying to say.  When this happens REPEATEDLY, this person is called a "difficult dictator."  However, if you make a mistake on their transcript or send it to QA, you are the ...

Very Worried About Gulf Coast Transcription
Jul 06, 2013

They have terminated some office/administrative people and now have eliminated weekend incentives and given pay CUTS to transcriptionists.  Work is nearly non-existent.  At the beginning of the summer they said it was a temporary slow down and would pick up shortly.  Instead it seems to be getting worse.  Anyone know anything?? Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding
Aug 13, 2013

Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day.  I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December.  The office is adding another surgeon, and they are rapidly expanding.  So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Coding School - Fate Of Coding Due To EMR
Apr 10, 2012

Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? I live in a rural area and there are advertisements for registered/accredited coders at medical facilities, but I'm afraid of spending all that time and money on schooling only to not be able to find a job. Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?
Feb 26, 2014

My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test.  This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course.  I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...
