Very disgusted with testing at most companies. - Suzy Q

Posted: Mar 07, 2012

I have spent days and days doing testing for several companies and either get ignored or some saying my scores were not high enough or they are not hiring after all.  This is really such a waste of time.  lThen after telling you they are no longer hiring, you see them advertising again the next day.  So, what is going on???  I am sure it is not just me having this kind of experience.  I have loads of experience -- 30 years and have done everything under the sun -- Radiiology, acute care, clinic notes, and all specialties too.  If I do not meet their criteria or qualifications then just what are they looking for.

I think this is just a big game with them, once again abusing and humiliating all the MT's.  I guess I am lucky because I don't really need to work anymore to pay my bills.  But my problem is that I still love to do transcription and they will not let me.  Very angry at this point.

I had the very same experience with someone who - sm

just got through posting another ad!! I did not even get an invite to test and I know I have enough experience. I wanted to email that person so bad and ask them why they do not want me!

Do you think - dlm

I have had the very same problems. Are any of you credentialed and do you think that is the problem? I am thinking of getting my RMT but if it not going to help then why bother!.!

Very few companies even care about CMT or RMT - credentials. I consider it a waste of time..sm

unless you really want the extra initials behind your name. The only way I would ever do it would be if a company actually offered more money as a result. I have seen only a rare few in years that did though. Since most companies are paying far less these days, I think they are more interested in someone without a lot of experience or credentials because they know they can pay that person less. JMO. Again, there ARE a few that recognize credentials but those are extremely rare IMO.

In fact, might be an interesting experiment to put out resumes with less experience and not show all jobs you've held, see if you get more offers. ha ha

I personally have taken the MTTest probably about 13 times over the years. Usually pass with flying colors and get called back quickly, sometimes I don't know. The other day I failed one - go figure. There was a lot of grammar and punctuating in there. Guess they probably didn't like the way I did it, though I have been called "excellent" by previous employers. Of course grammar is somewhat subjective and testing is a crap shoot. If 10 MTs transcribe the same document, you will get 10 slight variations. If in testing perhaps you slightly differ from the tester you're probably "not good enough." That's how I figure it. It's hit or miss, so I just keep testing until I hit one.

Totally agree with Rollercoaster MT - Confused

I normally sail through the MTTest site and yesterday had to use it to test for a part-time position with a big MTSO.

Two of the four reports were full of grammatical errors by the dictator.

I sat here in a state of total confusion...Should I clean up the grammatical errors or just transcribe verbatim? Were they looking to check my cleanup skills, or were they looking to see if I would just transcribe verbatim without a second thought to the pretty obvious dictation errors?

I finally did a mental coin flip and, since the test was to be scored electronically, decided to go verbatim, working under the assumption that an "electronic" scoring wouldn't be able to interpret cleanup and would count it as an error.

This is the first time I've ever encountered this on the dictation samples when testing and it really threw me off my game, to say the least.

I haven't found out my results yet, but if I don't pass (which would be a first), I guess I'll know they were looking for the dictation to be cleaned up, LOL!

Suzy Q: I have spent the last three months trying to test for a job. And that is with 20 years experience. I also do not need to work, just want to. I failed about 5 tests, passed about 10 tests but got pushed off to the wayside. Finally, I got a job. Just keep at it.

I hate to say this but...sm - a thought

I have experienced this as well and wondered if it was because I had too much experience so on my next test/application I took off about 15 years of my history and passed and got an offer. Might be worth a shot for you :-)

Thanks to all posters above. - Suzy Q

To all you posters above -- sm, dlm, Roller Coaster MT and cat lady -- you have made my day. I feel so much better now and have give me hope in the future. Cat lady, you are probably right that they shy away from MT's with too much experience. I never thought that was possible, but yeah they don't want to pay what we are worth is the bottom line, LOL. I will try not to get discouraged and just keep on plugging away. Still it is irritating to take a test, know you did a great job and then they come back and say "Oh unfortunately you had too many errors for our company. " Well that is fine with me. They are probably a lousy company anyway, HA, HA.

I do this too (sm) - AuntieAnxiety

Although I have 25 years experience, I just put "15+ years" so I don't unintentionally disqualify myself from the get-go. Better safe than sorry!

Maybe where you live makes a difference. - WW

I'm in the same boat and I have two thoughts. The first is that perhaps where an MT lives makes a difference. I made an e-mail inquiry to a promising company and actually received a short reply which asked, "Which state do you live in?" I e-mailed back the information and NEVER heard a word again, so apparently the company doesn't like where I live! Also, I often wonder how many tests and hoops those Indian transcriptionists have to go through to land a job offshore! I just can't imagine that they are able to go through the same rigorous testing that we go through, typing and grammar, and pass!

Testing With Companies
Dec 03, 2010

I have a question for anyone who is willing to give advice.  I just tested with a company, and one of the specialties they were offering was OB/GYN, so I tested on that since that is what I did my internship on.  I know I did well on it, because I had all my reference books and knowledge from internship...but it says I did not pass, then it says, "we need people with 2 or more years experience." I was being honest on the application when I said I did not have that much experience.  ...

So Disgusted.....
Aug 05, 2010

Well it is my first week with Transcend..... really not my first choice but I needed to get a job and they wanted me to start ASAP.   Seems the account I will be on has work, at least for now.  The real problem I have with them right now, is that they were supposed to send me a footpedal, to be shipped out on Monday overnight to me.  It is now Thursday, and according to the FedEx tracking site, it has not even left Georgia yet.  I am supposed to be doing 5 jobs a da ...

I'm So Disgusted! (sm)
Mar 06, 2012

I'm so disgusted I almost can't stand it. I have a small midwest transcription business and I live paycheck to paycheck like the rest of you do, struggling to pay my bills in this economy and pay my subcontractors a fair wage at the same time. I've gotten a few emails from a Mike Jones from Cat Technologies lately (as well as a linked-in request) informing me that they offer MT services at 5 cents per line for a 65 character line, 12-24 hr TAT with outsourcing to India. ...

Wow, These Companies Are Getting Worse And Worse Regarding Testing...sm
Sep 01, 2010

This company's written test says that I can't use any references, but based on the questions they're asking, I'd have to be a doctor to be able to answer them!  So am I to assume that I can't use references when I work either?  So sick of jumping through hoops for these companies... ...

Testing For MQ
Nov 20, 2009

It is truly laughable that MQ expects US MTs to jump through hoops, passing their tests, audits, trying to decipher absolute garbage and paying us like we were 6 month trainees, etc., and then have the audacity to send work to India.  I hope MQ gets its due for all the grief they have caused and their role in the demise of this industry!  If Verizon were to put them out of business, that would definitely be what they deserve. ...

I am hoping someone can help me out with this question. I am a single mother with a 3 and 6 year old. I recently resigned from my job due to management. Testing For A MT Job
Feb 07, 2014

How many of you think that testing to get an MT job absolutely ridiculous? When you apply to these so-called medical transcription companies, you send them your resume which I am sure highlights not only your experience, but also your education that you paid good money for and worked hard to obtain.  Yet, they still make you take a test.  Have you realized that the tests are designed for you to fail?    Your whole future is based on one test. Your experience and you ...

Tired Of Testing

Company Testing.......
Jan 07, 2010

I tested for a company who stated that my skills were not up to their requirements, which I find very difficult to believe, as I have been in this business for 10 years, nonetheless, I am beginning to wonder if some of these companies are not scamming us.  I was required to transcribe four different files with the shortest one being 6 minutes and the longest 12 minutes, but apparently, they were not good enough.  Again, I am baffled as I kept all the files I did and I did not find one ...
