A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
I just read this article (link below), and am coming to the realization that it is not Medical Transcription companies like Nuance care about, but they are 'suffering' MTs until MT is gone completely, which will be soon in my opinion. These companies are all competing and working toward selling their programs which will very soon eliminate the need for MT altogether because of the new EHR laws = the doctors will be doing their own editing with little free-style speech at all. My doctor has already told me as of March she will be doing this at one hospital that will be compliant. The hospitals who do not comply will be fined. Many hospitals are going to pay the fines (millions) because they are not compliant yet with the new EHRs and just do not have the technology in place yet. We are in the last phase I suppose...
To break it down, companies like Nuance are devising these new programs, and the competition is fierce. They do not need MTs for long so probably figure they do not have to pay or treat them well. Even the MTs overseas will not be needed in the near future. All we are now is training and teaching these new programs to do our jobs. "We" are the brains behind them really.
This is an article that sort of backs this up as even scribes are now coming under attack - there is controversy over whether or not they are needed. The new laws are aiming for electronic documentation to be done only by the doctors, which means no dictation - just data entry of templates that will be used by the doctors. When the doctors do dictate, they will use speech programs that can be edited only by themselves. My doctor was saying she will have less time to spend with patients and research, or even surgeries, etc.

If they feel this way about scribes, what must the feeling be of MT? My feeling is that it is already going to be gone...like the old steel plants and all the workers who went the same way we are going. The steel plant is still here in our city, an empty looming shell, merely a reminder of what used to be a thriving business and a boom for so many...now all run down and dilapidated. A sad memory.
So many years of my life studying and getting a higher education in this field... just wasted. I'm too old to just start over, but someone must have been looking down on me favorably because I did find another job, still working at home... just not in the medical field. I don’t have the clothes for an office job and I share a car with my kids, so at-home work was the only option for me right now. I can’t believe how lucky I was finding this job because there is absolutely nothing out there for MTs anymore. Nothing that’s going to last anyway.
I only have about 10 years before I hit retirement age, but because of nonstop buyouts and layoffs and whatnot I've experienced over the last decade, I realized there was no way I could ever retire in this business... so I got out. It's a really scary move and I've waffled on this decision for a year since TTMS was bought out by iMedX. I feel I almost waited too long. I only have my primary account left, no backup accounts, and my primary doesn't even have part-time work available now. There are too many vultures all vying for the same piece of carrion now.
Good luck to you! I start my new job next week! I'm looking forward to work like I haven't done in ages. I think my job going to India was a blessing in disguise. It forced me to revamp my life and my outlook - and get out of the medical field altogether. My kids have already told me that I appear happier (and nicer, lol) since I accepted the new career ;)
