Thought Everybody Would Like to See This - anon

Posted: May 01, 2012

This phrase was added at the end of an advertisement for employment.  Obviously it was in-house, but found it.... well.... rude, I guess.  Although I understand their position and their experiences, to include something like this in an advertisement would certainly send me running elsewhere.  Any opinions???

one last comment, and from prior experiences we have to make this statement: if you have had mutiple jobs a year, have gaps in time in your resume without explanation, references you know will say that they would not re-employ you under any circumstances, or where your prior employers will say that you were a clock watcher, back stabber, incompetent, lazy, belligerent, or that you were not a dependable, nor reliable nor competent employee, or where you always miss time from work each week, or always come into work late, or run out the door 30 seconds after closing time no matter how much urgent work is on your desk, please send your resume elsewhere *****

I'm shocked. VERY unprofessional, and probably run the business the same way. - MT

That is definitely rude and inappropriate---very unprofessional - sm

It may be that the HR person is fresh out of school. After a few years on the job, if they aren't fired first, he/she may learn to be a little less insensitive and/or condescending. The good thing though is, the person hiring probably isn't the person you would be working with. The other good thing is, that person probably isn't going to last very long in that job, especially if someone makes sure that the Administrator of the hospital or other top boss, at least a couple of rungs up the ladder, gets to see it.

All I can say is, Wow. You know, there are bad MTs in the world, but - there are other ways to weed them out. nm

And I am very surprised that an employer, particularly in-house, would run an ad like that. The only way to confirm that applicants actually do these things is to check references. My opinion is that no one will want to apply for this job. Who among us has not been a "clock watcher" when it's nearing the end of our shift? Most places these days don't want to pay overtime, so people do clock out when their shift ends. In health care, there is no "closing time" so I'd wonder what kind of employer this is. Maybe the ad was run as a joke, it's difficult to say. IMHO, no legitimate hospital or clinic would do this.

On the flip side... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe this company is tired of wasting valuable time and resources on candidates? Perhaps in their demographic area that's all they're getting - less-than-honest/qualified applicants? The gal who got me started in this field 24 years ago told me for every 100 applicants, 3 at best would be worth interviewing, and you want to hire 1 out of the 3. So multiple that by 3 or 5. Takes a lot of time weed those people out.

Flip Side - While you are right. - Professionalism

[ In Reply To ..]
Pretty much could be said for many professions / trades. Many inferior and dishonest people with poor work ethics will apply. It is the recruiter, HR, interviewer's job to check references, verify employment, etc. The "time and resources" spent doing this IS THEIR JOB for crying out loud! This ad simply says, in other words, "I am tired of doing my job by checking references, work history, and verifying the information people submit to me." Not to mention, that it is quite rude, unprofessional, and is a reflection on the company they work for. Perhaps the person posting the ad should brush up on her own job skills to be the kind of employee, herself, that she seeks for her company.

I get the flip side - AnonToo

[ In Reply To ..]
But I agree with the above and to me it says "this company is terribly unprofessional" and I would say next, even in this economy.

I think it's perfect - me

It weeds out 95% of the resumes MTSOs get. They should all come with that caveat. The high costs incurred in MT turnover is a cost employers could eliminate if only those who really want to work apply.

Job ad - Snappy MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately, the people to whom the comment is directed are the ones least likely to see themselves in it. Everyone "thinks" they want to work and do a good job, and we see posts in this forum everyday about "horrible" jobs, "horrible" MTSOs, and "horrible" pay rates, which is the justification these types use to justify why they do lousy work, skip their shift or come in late, pad their lines, or cherry pick. Not saying there aren't horrible conditions for many MTs, there are, but there are also plenty of horrible MTs. But as one poster said, it is HRs job to find good employees, and it doesn't say much for THEIR ability to expect any MT to say to themselves, "Oh yeah, guess I won't apply for this job because I am a "clock watcher, back stabber, incompetent, lazy, belligerent,,," LOL!!!!

The OP stated she thought this was an on site posting. No HR manager runs ads like that and keeps their job. I still think it might be someone's idea of a joke. If that's the case, they need to grow up.

I do state my expectations on my resume and in an interview. I have a comment that states I seek at least 1,800 lines a day consistently.

I didn't say the rest in your post, but I sure feel like it.

We should all do it. I have been answering ads and telling them exactly what I expect, including in term of cpl. One responded to me. It sounded like it could potentially be a decent job, but I am almost out of here.

It is against the law for any employer to give out information other than you work or worked there. - The Dept of labor would love to see this.

[ In Reply To ..]
It is bad enough was have suffered pay cuts, loss of benefits, no work and have to put up with incompetence, rudeness and the lies of MTSO's. Honesty works both ways.

Unfotunately, you can't prove they gave out other info - your word against theirs

[ In Reply To ..]
It's all verbal and unless it's tape recorded, there is no case "he said/she said." I owned a business many years ago and when a fired employee would put me down as a reference, you bet I told them exactly why the person was fired when they asked if I would re-hire. Theft is a huge liability and one I wouldn't want someone else to be burdened by it in their business.

So, if you do your job and conduct yourself the way you contract and are honest, you won't have anything to worry about when reference checking comes around. And yes, I do know that sometimes those answering that reference checking call are nasty, miserable people who would falsely say negative things just so you don't get the job.

Absolutely not illegal - exksmt

[ In Reply To ..]
There is no federal law forbidding companies from giving honest references, and I have never come across a state low forbidding this. This is false information. Please check and provide references before posting what you think is the law.

However, most chose not to for fear of legal issues.

If remarks or references prevent anyone from getting a job, per legal advice, it is illegal. - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
Why would you check other states job reference laws?
they why ask for references? - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I was told by my attorney that I could ask, "Would you rehire this person" and that is perfectly legal.
You make no sense - Basketcase
[ In Reply To ..]
There is nothing illegal about giving references. Even if "legal counsel" advises against something, that still doesn't make "illegal". Most employers just don't want the hassle anymore.

Giving out info - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
The above applies if you are applying for a loan and the bank calls for salary verification, or if a prospective employer calls human resources with a general inquiry. However, if you provide references, they are free to say whatever they choose, and it is not illegal. Besides, it would all be considered hearsay in court and would not be admissible evidence.

Pretty sure the DoL couldn't care less - Basketcase

[ In Reply To ..]
They certainly aren't going to be concerned with whether an employer gave a reference. I don't understand why people thinks its illegal to give or get references. At least take a basic business/employment law class before you spew misinformation...

EEOC Reference - Basketcase

According to the EEOC, it is illegal to give a false reference or say something that isn't true. It is not illegal to give an honest reference. See link:

I understand where they are coming from - but, an prior company who answers anything but yes they worked here from here to here, no/yes I'd re-hire them is violating federal law.

What federal law are they violating?

Wow. If that's their employment ad, imagine how - nasty it must be to work for them! :(

Actually, it is against the law (they could have a law suit) to say anything other than yes, this person did work during these dates.

Please post a reference - Basketcase

[ In Reply To ..]
Please post a reference to this "law" that makes it illegal to give a reference. People can sue, but it still doesn't make it against the law to give references. Where do you get this information from?

People need to know that their employers may legally give references. Some employers chose not to, but may still do so, legally.

Here's a reference on giving references :) - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It's not against the law to state what you want to someone asking for a reference. It only possibly opens you up for a lawsuit - BUT it works both ways. See below:

"Don't Cover-up : while you shouldn't start speculating and bad mouthing the prior employee, at the same time you shouldn't cover-up for him or her. If you outright lie and cover-up for a former employee, you can actually get sued by the new employer for failing to warn you about serious employee misconduct"

Thank you - Basketcase

I was thinking the same thing. You tell the new employer how wonderful someone is, how honest they are, etc., and its totally false, I can see them coming back on you.

I think this was a very large account and they could have divided the MTs who had this as their primary and put them on various other accounts.  Yes, this would have overstaffed those accounts and more MTs would be getting NJA as we all scrambled for what work there was.  Also, this way WMX would not be putting out unemployement for anyone and soon most of us would not have benefits because we couldn't keep our line counts up with NJA all the time.  All in all, looks like the ...
