from the sisters 2 weeks prior. If you think your account is safe with RecordsOne, I'd think again. It was the 1-2 punch I was afraid of. So unfortunate what's happened. I do have other contract jobs with only a couple more years in this biz (thankfully), but hope I can make it!

and if you think your account with Mercedes is safe, think again... - I had one come back to RecordsOne!

If Mercedes is paying 6.5 VBC, that's equal to about 4 cpl (65 character line with spaces). And this is for straight typing!

Nobody can survive on pay as low as that. If you can type 150 lines per hour, that means you're only making about $6.00 per hour. That's less than minimum wage! If you can type 200 lines per hour, that'll maybe put you slightly above minimum wage.

Meanwhile, I imagine the Mercedes management will be laughing all the way to the bank...while their MTs slowly starve and become homeless.

I'd really like for you to tell me how you arrive at that amount. First I see 5 cents/line and now it is 4.

Just what are you trying to do on this board? I am leery about whether or not you have any interest in Mercedes or RecordsOne.

Just wondering about this whole thing. Seems like some are so nosey as to constantly ask about stuff that is none of their business and concerns only those of us working for these two new companies after the split.

Let me tell you, it is no picnic to change to doing two companies' transcription and not getting answers from one of them in particular.

I am not going to divulge any secrets. We all had to sign a contract with Mercedes and I am not about to violate that just for some nosey person.

6.5 VBC equals 4 cpl - see msg for math

I have no dog in this fight. I don't work for Mercedes. My only "interest" in this is as an MT. I am appalled that a company like Mercedes would offer such a paltry pay rate, minimum wage or barely above, for an MT. MT requires specialized skills and specialized knowledge.

VBC means a "visible black character" line, meaning that spaces are not paid. The MT is only paid for the visible black characters.

A previous article from AHIMA/AAMT reported that changing from a 65 character line with spaces to a VBC line results in a 31.6% decrease in pay for the MT.

So: 6.5 cpl times 31.6% (0.065 x 0.316) equals 0.02054. That's the realized decrease in pay for switching to VBC, just a little over 2 cpl.

Then, 0.065 minus 0.02054 equals 0.04446.

So, rounding off, 6.5 VBC is equal to 4.4 cpl with spaces.

The original post said 4 cpl. My math comes out to 4.4 cpl.

But, whichever it is, that is a pay rate that I myself would never accept. I feel that the vast knowledge and skills that an MT must have is worth much more than minimum wage.

If I'm going to have to be making minimum wage, I might as well go flip burgers. But then again, even the McDonald's in my area pays more than minimum wage, along with regular salary reviews and raises.

Goodness, even that little gas station mini mart down on the corner from me starts their employees out at $11.00 an hour, along with small incremental raises every 6 months, plus they are employees with full benefits. I talked to one of the women who works there and she was making just short of $15 per hour. At 4.4 cpl, an MT would have to type about 340 lines per hour in order to make $15 per hour.

Plus it is IC work, so you are responsible for the whole self-employment tax, nm - so that effectively lowers the rate more

So good to see someone right on. These companies have tried over the years to camouflage any way they can for hidden profits, and they have succeeded, but a lot of naÃ�Â¯ve MTs will not believe it. They start arguing and belittling those who try to warn them. In-house I loved my job and had benefits, fair pay, respect of being a caring part of a team of hospital workers, and a career. All that is gone. Unskilled labor pays more than this career and its phony tactics. Then you have others who call you nosey...thanks for being a caring person to open the blindsighted. And most of all...I thank you for the math...brilliant...great for the doubting Thomas's. Thanks for reiterating on the definition of VBC (visible black character). Tactics used when paying by minutes, pages, no headers, no footers, etc. Always hidden ways to cheat the MT. Thanks for pulling the curtain! Much appreciated.

I'm with this guy on how ridiculous Nuance's CEO pay is and I can actually understand this video, kind of. Nuance apparently enacted an anti-takeover provision limiting power of anyone with 20% or more share of stock to dilute their voting rights. They do not want that guy Icahn, who wants Apple to buy Nuance, to have power to persuade them to sell. I decided to send them the contract e-mail back stating I would not be accepting and why - that with 20 years experience, I will quit the industry before going that low and that there are still other jobs out there willing to pay more (even if it is only for 6 months to a year that they told me it would last). On reading the posts below, if an MT makes 8 cpl and pay is cut down to 6.5 cpl, that is an approximately 20% pay cut. Then, going from a 65-character line with spaces to VBC (a 65-character line without spaces), that is an approximately 30% pay cut. So, 20% plus 30% equals an overall 50% pay cut. Can that possibly be correct? ...
