Looking for input - KYMT

Posted: Nov 18, 2009

Never thought I'd be posting this, but I need others' input.  I have been working as an MT since 1988 and have lots of varied experience, including acute care, in different specialties.  Until recently was only working part-time.  I decided a few weeks ago to look for full-time work.  Have been sending out resume' on top of resume', but so far have gotten zero response.  Now I know companies are hiring, so I'm wondering . . . does anybody have any tips as far as how you formatted your resume' to get recruiters' attention?  Or other tips to get more responses?  Please don't start bashing the quality of my work as I can honestly say it is excellent without being arrogant.

Resume - Happy MT Robin

Without seeing a sample, it's hard to say, but I never put the section at the top that says "objective." I always figure the fact that I'm giving someone a resume is enough. They know my objective at that point.

I always keep my resume very clean and simple. This is what I put on for my transcription resume:

Name
Address
Phone number
email address.

* Typing speed or average lines per hour
* Type of internet connection
* Types of programs familiar with; i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
* If you have knowledge of specialized platforms such as Meditech, Dictaphone, Extext, etc., I would put that here as well.

Work History
Starting with most recent job

Keep it to one page. Go into detail about the jobs and functions you perform, but not too much detail. If you have been working part time recently for a specific reason, put that somewhere. I have a part time job and right next to the employer name I put "part time job in addition to full time job."

Good luck. There are lots of job ads out there, but I think there are an awful lot of applicants as well. You may send out 20 or 30 resumes and/or tests before you get one that responds. Don't get discouraged.

To Happy MT Robin... when do you find time to work? - You are always on this board

[ In Reply To ..]
Landmark must be really glad to have you, but I don't know how you find time to work and be here too. Don't go flaming me, but your name pops up all over these pages. How's that 8-hour workday going for ya?

I'm not always on the board - Happy MT Robin

I've been here more lately than usual, but I pop in between reports to give my brain a break. It doesn't take but a minute to read any new posts, if there are any.

A helpful post with good suggestions and a nice sample resume, so thank you!! There is absolutely no reason why you should have to justify how much time you spend here. (What a nasty, uncalled for response to your positive post.)

Takes a lot of time to get response - LK

Just because you haven't gotten a response in a couple weeks of sending out resumes does not mean you won't. When I looked for work about a year ago I was quite surprised by how long it took for companies to get back to me, sometimes a month or more. You'll probably start to hear back on some of those resumes before too much longer.

Give it time... - Polka Dot

I've been doing this for over 25 years, and decided to switch companies. It took a couple of months before I got any replies at all, and then suddenly I had 3 offers in 1 week. Hang in there!

I TOTALLY agree. I've been sending resumes to several companies that have posted on the Job Seekers board only to hear crickets (nothing). I have over 22 years experience in radiology and great references. I know they probably get hundreds if not thousands of replies, but would it hurt to send a cover letter email letting everyone know who applied that the position/positions were filled? There is nothing worse than checking your email every day only to find nothing.

resume - 7DayMT

I put a short objective section, although I don't think it's necessary, giving a brief summary of what I'm looking for and my experience. I alter this depending on what company I am applying for.

Under each individual company that I've worked for I say what kind of work I have done (for example, acute care, lots of operative reports, heavy ESL experience, what programs I've used).

Don't hear from everyone but get a decent response rate.

It just takes time....... - MT

When I was looking for a new job a while back, I sent out COUNTLESS resumes as well as taking so many tests that take so long that I was frustrated. I FINALLY found a job and over the past few months I get emails almost daily from jobs that I tested with saying they are interested in hiring me and that was over four months ago. I suppose they are just slow.

Remember, they are probably getting tons of resumes, - takes time. NM

What doesnt add up is, when you read the ads - on the Jobs board, they make it -sm

[ In Reply To ..]
sound like they're up to their eyeballs in work. Their ads almost take on a tone of desparation to them. And yet, any one of us sends them a resume or an application, and we all hear crickets.

If they don't REALLY want American workers, then why do they waste our time and theirs by even advertising in the US? That's what I'd like to know.

Maybe they hire the first person who applies - always a day late myself

[ In Reply To ..]
If they are so desperate, they might be grabbing up the first qualified resumes that come in, then leave their ad up to get a pool of resumes to choose from if they don't work out.

Maybe I'm naieve but that's what I was hoping is the case.

Same here. In a nutshell, I think they are passing - up experience in favor of inexperience, (SM)

[ In Reply To ..]
which in their eyes is "cheaper" because they'll work for so little.

Of course, we all know - you get what you pay for.

Can I Get Some Input On PTO Please.
Jul 11, 2011

We only have 3.?? hours every pay period of PTO until after 4 years with the company.  I was off last week and for each day for PTO I indicated 7 hours per day.  This will give me 1 extra day of PTO over the year at 7 hours pay.  I do not know if that is allowed, they may require us to indicate 8 if we took the whole day off.  Will see what happens about that.  I wish I could put 6 hours per day, leaving me more hours of PTO. We have 2 days paid sick time, which I have ...

Thanks For The Input
Jan 11, 2012

I am very happy to have found this forum. I thank you all for the input on companies. I worked for a company for three years and was frustrated to the point of going nuts. I broke three keyboards and threw books at the wall. I had never experienced this when I worked directly for a practice and had to leave there too. I messed up my left wrist trying to make the lines they expected and took 10-12 a day since their platform was so very slow. I ended up taking a medical month leave of absen ...

Need Some Advice And Input...
Jun 22, 2010

I recently started working PT for a company.   So far, everything has been great with them.  Great work to do, good line counts, pay is on time every time and accurate.  However, something in the back of my mind keeps bugging me.  They didn't ask me to fill out a W-9 form.  Is this normal for PT IC work?  I mentioned it to them and didn't get a reply back about it.    Perhaps, I'm just being paranoid, but I'd like to know your th ...

I May Take A Job With Accentus. Looking For Input.
Mar 11, 2012

I would be doing cliniic work because I want the flexible 12-hour schedule to fit around a part time job working directly for a small hospital.   I may end up being bored, but I want to give it a try.  How is the clinic work and how is the Apex system?  I have previously worked on DocQspeech and Escription.  I really want no more than two accounts and to be mostly just left alone unless I screw something up.  Is this possible with Accentus? ...

Input Wanted From My Fellow MQ'rs
Jun 10, 2010

I'm totally getting burned out at MQ.  If it's not the NJA with requests to change schedule, then it's the lack of primary and getting other unknown accounts slowing me down.  I've gone from full-time at MQ down to working part-time with another part-time job to make up lost income now for the past 7 months.  When I started MT'ing so many years ago, the pay was great and being able to set my own schedule was a real plus as well.  It was the ...

Above 120 minutes = 1 and 1/2 x 1.05 per minute I have over 15 years of experience.  I need to know if this can pay my bills but it is hard to gauge without knowing the account (how many templates/normals are used, if cherrypicking takes place, if the account is overstaffed or if there is working during the afternoon shift).  ...

Why Isn't ASR Programmed To Input Dates
Nov 10, 2010

I am doing a lot of cancer clinic notes today (very long reports).  They all have lots of dates in them due to the various tests and treatments the patients have had. This particular facility wants the dates typed out in XX/XX/XXXX fashion; however ASR types them out the long way, i.e., August 26, 2010, so I have to change them all to fit the client profile. It's rather annoying.  I figured that ASR was supposed to be formatted to be in line with the different client profiles. ...

Kinda Upset, Would Like Input
Mar 25, 2012

I've been working in an office for only about 3 months now after about 12 years in-home transcription.  It's a busy office for a doctor who is kind of a "superstar" in his field and I love it.  Here's the thing...  it's a new practice, the entire staff has been here for less than a year and we don't all have hardly any PTO saved up (less than a year and all...) and the doc is going to be closing up the office for 2 weeks to go on vacation.  Several of ...

Drs. Who NEVER Input Patient Names.
Jun 27, 2012

How annoying is that? There are a few doctors on my account that don't bother inputting the patient name into the demographics, don't spell it, don't give a date of service...they just say a name and start dictating. They do this for every report, and it's been that way since I started working here! I have a rule where I only try 2 spellings of the name to find the patient. Otherwise it gets pended. What do you guys do?     ...

Who Should I Address Petition To? Need Input.
Jan 11, 2013

I am increasingly disgusted and appalled over what this industry has turned into and what the big MTSOs are getting away with at the expense of our ranks.  I don't know if it will have any effect, but I would like to do something to try.  I would like to start a petition through Change.org and state our plight.  This would include the need for wage standards including a minimum wage mandate as well as the offshoring problem and how it is affecting our economy as well as us, f ...

Long Time MTs I'd Like Your Input Please

Has anyone ever tried to be compensated for that time? If ...
