long time MTs I'd like your input please - just sooo tired

Posted: Apr 12, 2013

Remember the good old days when we had our own accounts and only signed with a service as "filler?" This is the third time that I have committed to working full time, signed the "Agreement" that yes, I will work for you full time hours, only to end up with under 20 hours for the month, or better yet sitting and waiting and waiting to start with now no full-time income coming in because I have committed to them to full time! Has anyone ever tried to be compensated for that time? If we agreed to work full time and then didn't for whatever reason, we would be out on our a_ _ the first day. Obviously, if we try to add an addendum to their agreements I'm sure "they" would just hire someone else. I realize our hands are tied when we accept work with out-of-state companies for anything with small claims court, but shouldn't the agreement that they have not honored and e-mail conversations preserved count for something? Please let me know if any of you have ever tried anything. Thanks!

You can sue an out-of-state company/person/whatever in small claims.

I always thought to sue a company that's out of state you would have to travel to their state to do so. I'll have to look into it. thanks

But are paid on production, I would contact both the Labor Board and IRS and discuss things with them.

this has happened with IC positions. I would feel somewhat empowered as an employee and do what you have suggested. The way it is now, like so many of us I can't afford to miss even one week's pay and it so frustrating when you know that you would be fired if you were turning work in late, let alone telling them you can work 5 days and then deciding to only work 3. thanks.

On days when I come up against NJA, I give it a few minutes - maybe go get the mail, put in a load of laundry, then try again. If still no work, I LOG OFF, and go do one of my side-income projects. I may be full-time, but if they can't provide me with a full-time income (which most of the time they CAN'T), the money's gotta come from SOMEWHERE, right?

Yes, absolutely. I try to keep some additional work to do (still have a couple of very very small accounts of my own) but you know how it goes. When these places jerk you around, we should have some way to go after them and it doesn't seem like we do. Thanks.

Once Upon A Time Long Ago....
Jul 22, 2012

Remember when we worked as MTs and didn't have QAs?  Boy those were the days!  Anyone else remember that?  Remember when we were good, trusted, common sense mattered, we made our own judgment calls, did our job and supervisors liked us?  Wow all was wonderful with the world back then.  Okay going back to my current reality now......   ...

I Am A LONG Time Medquist'er About To Take A Leap
Dec 05, 2011

I've been with Medquist forEVER but I've been consistently losing income for the past 3 years.  Last month, I was forced to go on governmental assistance just to keep a roof over my and my son's heads because of my lack of income with Medquist.  This year I may just barely make $10,000.  I have been with this company through thick and thin.  I have seen thousands of changes, and been through several dozen supervisors.  I am a WAY dedicated employee, p ...

Long Time MT With Burnout And Cabin Fever!
Dec 16, 2009

I've been an MT for 15 years and work full time, 40 hours a week.  Lately, I have been SO restless and bored to death with my job!  I'm married and have no kids--when my husband gets home from work, he is glad to be here; meanwhile, by mid week, I'm about to go stark raving mad due to being at home so much!  Now I'm not new at this, as I said.  I have also been in QA, which I enjoyed much more, but the pay was so dire that I went back to transcribing. ...

Does Being A Long-time MT Make You More Valuable If You Become A Coder?
Mar 28, 2010

So if someone has been an MT for 10 years and then moves onto coding, does that make them more valuable to employers? Also do you recommend the Andrews School over the rest?  I am pretty sure I am going to do this but am wondering if I should sit in college class and do all of this or go with the Andrews School. Is there really a PLUS to taking the classes on campus in a classroom setting?  Thanks! ...

Time Versus Money - Long Commute
Aug 01, 2012

I am doing some thinking about what is important to me. I have been looking at jobs on Indeed.com and found 2 coding jobs that I might qualify for down the line, but they both involve a 1-1/2 hour commute via public transportation each way. So that's 3 hours a day getting there and back. After working at home more than 10 years, that idea seems very daunting to me. I could look for work closer to home, but the pay would be considerably less doing outpatient coding for a dr's office ...

Can I Get Some Input On PTO Please.
Jul 11, 2011

We only have 3.?? hours every pay period of PTO until after 4 years with the company.  I was off last week and for each day for PTO I indicated 7 hours per day.  This will give me 1 extra day of PTO over the year at 7 hours pay.  I do not know if that is allowed, they may require us to indicate 8 if we took the whole day off.  Will see what happens about that.  I wish I could put 6 hours per day, leaving me more hours of PTO. We have 2 days paid sick time, which I have ...

Thanks For The Input
Jan 11, 2012

I am very happy to have found this forum. I thank you all for the input on companies. I worked for a company for three years and was frustrated to the point of going nuts. I broke three keyboards and threw books at the wall. I had never experienced this when I worked directly for a practice and had to leave there too. I messed up my left wrist trying to make the lines they expected and took 10-12 a day since their platform was so very slow. I ended up taking a medical month leave of absen ...

Need Some Advice And Input...
Jun 22, 2010

I recently started working PT for a company.   So far, everything has been great with them.  Great work to do, good line counts, pay is on time every time and accurate.  However, something in the back of my mind keeps bugging me.  They didn't ask me to fill out a W-9 form.  Is this normal for PT IC work?  I mentioned it to them and didn't get a reply back about it.    Perhaps, I'm just being paranoid, but I'd like to know your th ...
